Auman EST 6x4 380 hp RHD Reviewed: Torque Matters More Than Power

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

The cheapest way to buy too little truck is to specify on horsepower and discover afterwards that the constraint was somewhere else entirely. This tractor is rated at 380 hp and 55,000 kg gross combination weight, which sounds modest next to the 430 and 460 machines in the same catalogue. Then you read further: a 4.111 final drive, a double-layer frame and nine and twelve leaves of spring steel. Those three figures say more about what this truck is built for than the horsepower ever will. The Foton Auman EST 6x4 tractor is specified for strength rather than speed, and that may be exactly what you need.

Engine and the torque plateau that makes it work

Power comes from the Cummins ISG 380, an 11,800 cc diesel rated at 279 kW / 380 PS at 1,900 rpm with maximum torque of 2,000 Nm between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm. Read that second figure properly: two thousand newton-metres held across a three-hundred-rpm band rather than at a single peak. That plateau is what lets a modest horsepower figure move 55 tonnes, because it gives the driver something to work with through a change of gradient.

Behind it is the Sinotruk HW23712 with an iron housing. The iron case is heavier than an aluminium equivalent and that is deliberate: it is a durable, well-understood unit rather than a weight-saving one, which suits operators working far from dealer support. Twelve speeds give the spread to keep a narrow torque band working, and that is precisely why the gearbox and final drive matter more here than headline power.

"Do not judge this truck on 380 hp. Judge it on 2,000 Nm held from 1,000 rpm and a 4.111 final drive that decides where that torque lands."

4.111: understand the compromise you are accepting

The drive axle ratio is 4.111, which sits between the tall economy ratios used on pure highway tractors and the very short ratios fitted to site machines. On paper it does two jobs at once: it keeps cruising revs and fuel burn reasonable on highway sections while retaining enough pulling force for 55,000 kg on grades. That is a genuine compromise rather than a lazy default.

The catch is that a compromise is optimised for nothing. If most of your work is mine haulage or steep unpaved access roads, ask the dealer to quote a numerically higher ratio from the SB8, SB7, SB9 and SBA axle options listed. If most of it is flat highway container transport, ask whether anything taller can be built. Either way you should not accept 4.111 without stating your route mix first.

Frame, suspension and brakes: read the build intent

The frame cross-section is 225/286 × 80 × (8+5) mm. That 8+5 indicates an additional reinforcing layer, and alongside nine leaves at the front and twelve at the rear it is the clearest evidence that this chassis was engineered for rough work rather than simply marketed as suitable for it. For mining haulage and bulk cargo duty, that extra material is what stops cracks appearing in year three.

Brakes tell a more frugal story: air-operated drums at both front and rear with ABS, no discs, no ESC and no EBS. Drums are cheap, durable and repairable in almost any workshop, which matters when your nearest dealer is a long way off. What they do less well is resist fade on long repeated descents, so plan your routes and driver training around that rather than ignoring it.

Right-hand drive: markets and the registration question

This BJ4259SMFKB-RK is built right-hand drive, which points it at left-hand-traffic markets — southern and eastern Africa, parts of South-East Asia and similar regions. Left-hand drive is a separate build, so confirm the steering side at enquiry rather than discovering it after ordering. No sales country is given on this listing, so treat destination as an open question rather than assumed.

More importantly, the sheet lists no certified emission level. That restricts the truck to markets that do not demand an emission certificate on import, and it is not something that can be corrected once built. Send the dealer your destination and registration requirement and get written confirmation of what documentation can be provided before you commit any money.

Cab specification and the options worth ticking

The cab is flat roof, two seats, with automatic air conditioning, MP3, radio and USB with no radar, power windows, central locking, remote lock, a five-in-one lock and an airbag seat as standard. Mirrors are manual. For a truck returning to base most nights, that is adequate; for multi-day routes with two drivers, the flat roof is the item that will grate, and you should ask whether a high-roof version exists.

Beyond that, the useful options are the satellite positioning device, listed as 0/J, which is genuinely worth having for fleet tracking, and the wide tyre and axle lists. The fifth wheel line reads 0/9 and battery capacity is given as 181 Ah, both worth confirming for your trailer combination. Tyres are 315/80R22.5 18PR on eleven wheels — a size almost every commercial tyre shop stocks.

Price, shipping and what is not included

The listed price is $43,127. The internal note records vehicle number 4259SMFKB-RKZA07 with an FOB price of ¥229,500 from Tianjin or Qingdao, shipped roll-on roll-off. Two things follow. First, establish whether your quote is in dollars or yuan and on which basis. Second, understand that freight, insurance and destination charges are quoted separately, so send your discharge port and fleet size to get a landed figure.

RoRo is the correct method for a complete tractor, and knowing it up front avoids the surprise of a shipping quote that assumes otherwise. Set the whole package against European alternatives and the capital saving remains substantial; weigh it honestly against the missing emission certificate, drum brakes and basic cab, none of which are hidden if you read the sheet properly. The EST 6x4 tractor page is where to take it from here.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Is 380 hp and 4.111 gearing enough for 55T?

The ISG 380 delivers 2,000 Nm across 1,000 to 1,300 rpm, so the 4.111 final drive works as a compromise: it keeps cruising revs and fuel burn reasonable on highway runs while leaving enough pulling force for a 55,000 kg GCW. If most of your work is mine haulage or steep unpaved roads, ask for a numerically higher ratio from the SB8/SB7/SB9/SBA axle options. The 12-speed iron gearbox gives the spread either way.

Which markets suit this right-hand-drive BJ4259 tractor?

This BJ4259SMFKB-RK is built right-hand drive, which suits left-hand-traffic markets across southern and eastern Africa, parts of South-East Asia and similar regions. Left-hand drive is a separate build, so confirm the steering side at enquiry rather than after ordering. Note also that the sheet lists no certified emission level, so tell the dealer your destination and registration requirement and get documentation confirmed.

What options can be added, and is shipping included?

Airbag seat, automatic air conditioning, power windows and central and remote locking are already standard on this tractor. Beyond that you can specify alternative middle and rear axles, a wide tyre list, the FJZ bumper and a satellite positioning device, which is worth having for fleet tracking. Freight, insurance and destination charges are quoted separately, so send your discharge port and fleet size for a landed cost.
