Auman GTL-E 6x4 Dumper: Is 340 PS Enough at 55 Tonnes?

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Buying a 55-tonne dumper is rarely about horsepower; it is about whether the truck keeps moving on your worst ramp with your worst load. This Auman GTL-E 6×4 dump truck pairs a Cummins ISG 340 — 340 PS and 1,800 N·m from 1,000 rpm — with a Sinotruk 12-speed and a 5,600 mm Q345 bucket lifted by a HYVA cylinder, specified for mining haulage, quarry transport, earthmoving and aggregate delivery. The question buyers ask is whether 340 PS is enough at 55 tonnes, and the honest answer depends on gradients and altitude. Start with the Auman GTL-E 6x4 dump truck specification and read it alongside this.

Is 340 PS enough at 55 tonnes?

The engine is the Cummins ISG 340: 10,500 cc, 250 kW / 340 PS at 1,900 rpm and 1,800 N·m from 1,000 rpm. That torque figure arriving at 1,000 rpm is the important part, because it means the engine is already producing its best work just above idle — exactly where you need it when a loaded 55-tonner has to break away on a soft quarry floor. Peak power at 1,900 rpm tells you the engine is tuned to work in a narrow, low band rather than to rev.

Behind it is the Sinotruk HW19712 Iron (Q) 12-speed with a 5.26 drive axle ratio. Twelve ratios let you keep the engine in that torque band on changing gradients, and the deep 5.26 final drive multiplies torque at the wheels, which protects the driveline on loose surfaces. Where this combination will feel short is on sustained steep ramps or at high altitude, where higher-output ISG versions in the same GTL-E cab hold a gear longer and keep cycle times down. If your ramps are short and loads stay inside the 55,000 kg GCW, the 340 PS unit is the more economical choice; if your site is a long climb, price the bigger engine against the cycle time you would lose.

"Judge this truck on torque at 1,000 rpm, not on peak power. 1,800 N·m that early is what gets 55 tonnes moving."

The bucket: rectangular or U-shaped, both Q345

5,600×2,300×1,500 mm bucket, Q345 steel, HYVA cylinder.

Both body styles are offered at 5,600×2,300×1,500 mm in Q345 steel with an 8 mm floor and 6 mm sides, lifted by a HYVA cylinder. That is a genuinely heavy specification: an 8 mm floor is built for rock dropped from an excavator bucket, and Q345 is a higher-strength structural steel than the mild steel used on light bodies. HYVA is a name your maintenance team will recognise, which matters when you need a seal kit or a replacement cylinder in a remote location.

Choosing between the two shapes is not cosmetic. The U-shaped body sheds sticky material faster, trims tare weight slightly and keeps the centre of gravity lower on uneven ground — the right pick for clay and damp aggregates. The rectangular body carries more volume for the same length and is easier to line or repair in the field, so it is the usual choice for dry rock and sand. Tell the dealer what you are actually hauling and let that decide it, rather than accepting whatever is in stock.

Axles, wheelbase and where the weight goes

The wheelbase is 3,825+1,350 mm on an 8,390×2,550×3,580 mm chassis, with 55,000 kg listed as the gross figure. That relatively short wheelbase keeps the truck manoeuvrable at quarry faces and on tight switchbacks, and the 5,600 mm bucket is matched to it so the load sits inside the frame rather than hanging behind it. Axle capacities are 7.5 T front and 16 T middle/rear — note that the front axle is lighter than the 9 T-front versions offered elsewhere in the range, so loading that throws weight forward should be avoided.

That point deserves emphasis on a dumper. Excavator operators load fast and not always centrally; a bucket dropped towards the front of the body overloads a 7.5 T axle long before the gross figure is reached. Brief your loading crews, keep gross inside 55,000 kg, and check axle distribution with your bodybuilder before the hoist position is fixed. Suspension is leaf spring throughout (10 front, 12 rear) and the frame is 225/320×90×(8+7) mm — a heavy section appropriate to the duty.

Brakes, tyres and the reality of a loaded descent

Auman GTL-E dumper rear bogie and tyres
12.00R20 16PR mixed-pattern tyres, eleven in total, on a 16 T rear bogie.

Brakes are air brakes, front and rear drums, with ABS. Drums are correct off-road: tolerant of dust and grit, cheap to reline, repairable in a site workshop. What they dislike is heat, and a loaded descent off a quarry bench builds it fast. Select the right gear before the gradient and let the engine hold the truck, using the service brake to correct rather than to control. The sheet lists no engine brake or retarder, so ask whether one can be specified — on a 55-tonner that is a safety item, not a comfort.

Tyres are 12.00R20 16PR in a mixed pattern, eleven wheels including the spare — the standard heavy dumper fitment. Confirm which axle positions get which pattern, and check local availability of 12.00R20 before delivery, because on a mine site a tyre you cannot source stops the truck. The 350 L aluminium tank is generous and resists corrosion, but ask whether a guard is fitted for rocky ground. The desert air filter is optional; if your site is dusty, take it.

"Air drums are fine off-road. Descending 55 tonnes on the service brake is not — ask about a retarder before you sign."

Cab, and what the driver gets for a long shift

Auman GTL-E flat-roof cab interior with airbag seat
Flat-roof cab, two seats, automatic air conditioning and an airbag seat as standard.

It is a flat-roof cab seating two, in left-hand drive. Flat roof is pragmatic on a dumper: lower overall height, easier shipping, nothing above the cab to catch on obstacles. Two seats suit a driver and a banksman; no bunk is listed, so plan single-shift operation. Standard equipment includes automatic air conditioning, MP3 + radio + USB, power windows, central locking, remote lock, five-in-one lock, an airbag seat and manual mirrors.

The airbag seat is the item to notice: on broken haul roads, seat suspension is the difference between a driver who finishes a shift and one who cannot. Note that the infotainment is listed with no radar, mirrors are manual, and satellite positioning is optional — if your dispatch needs telematics, specify it at order stage rather than retrofitting.

Price, shipping and what to confirm before paying

Short wheelbase keeps the truck workable at faces and on switchbacks.

The listing shows $50,384 with an FOB Tianjin/Qingdao RoRo figure of ¥274,239. Treat those separately: the FOB RoRo quote is a rolled-on, rolled-off shipment from a named Chinese port, and ocean freight, insurance, destination charges and duties sit on top. Confirm which port, whether RoRo serves your discharge port, and what a 3,580 mm overall height means for that method.

The sheet records no emission standard for this build, which is worth resolving before you import: ask what documentation ships with the vehicle and whether a certified configuration is available. The specification describes this unit as engineered for operations in Paraguay, and it is left-hand drive — importing elsewhere, confirm LHD is registrable and that 55,000 kg and these axle loads fit your licensing class.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Is 340 hp enough for 55-tonne mine haul roads?

With 1,800 N·m from 1,000 rpm, a Sinotruk 12-speed and a 5.26 rear axle ratio, the ISG 340 will start and hold 55,000 kg on typical haul-road grades, and the deep ratio protects the driveline on soft surfaces. It will feel short on sustained steep ramps or at high altitude, where higher-output ISG versions in the same cab hold a gear longer. Short ramps and loads within GCW make the 340 the more economical choice.

Rectangular or U-shaped bucket for quarry work?

Both are offered at 5,600×2,300×1,500 mm in Q345 with an 8 mm floor and 6 mm sides, lifted by a HYVA cylinder. The U-shape sheds sticky material faster, trims tare weight and keeps the centre of gravity lower on uneven ground, suiting clay and damp aggregates. The rectangular body carries more volume for the same length and is easier to line or repair, so it is usual for dry rock and sand.

Is the short 3,825+1,350 wheelbase stable when loaded?

It keeps the 8,390 mm chassis manoeuvrable at quarry faces and on switchbacks, and the 5,600 mm bucket is matched to it so the load sits inside the frame. This unit runs a 7.5 T front axle with a 16 T rear bogie — lighter at the front than the 9 T-front versions — so avoid loading that throws weight forward. Keep gross within 55,000 kg and check axle distribution with your bodybuilder before fixing the hoist position.

What should I confirm that the sheet does not state?

Whether an engine brake or retarder can be specified; which tyre pattern goes on which axle position; the emission documentation that ships with the vehicle; warranty terms and service intervals for the ISG 340 and the Sinotruk gearbox; and whether the desert air filter and satellite positioning are worth adding for your site.

HYVA lifting gear on a Q345 body — tip on level ground.

Our read: this is a sensible configuration for mining haulage, quarry transport, earthmoving and aggregate delivery where gradients are moderate and loads stay inside the rating. The Cummins torque curve, the 12-speed and the 5.26 ratio are the parts that will earn you money; the 7.5 T front axle and the drum brakes are the parts that need operating discipline. If your site is a long, steep, high-altitude climb, get a price on the higher-output version and compare it against the cycle time you would give up.

Before ordering, confirm the emission documentation, ask about a retarder, and get a landed figure from your discharge port. The Auman GTL-E dumper page has the full sheet and the variant list.
