Is the Foton W3 TM2 4.5T Micro Truck Right for Ghana Work?

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

If you are buying your first light truck for work in Ghana, the decision is not really about brand — it is about whether the vehicle can do four or five paid trips a day on bad roads without becoming a maintenance problem. Owner-operators and small fleets in this class usually start with a 4.5-tonner, and the Foton W3 TM2 micro truck with cargo box sits at the sharp end of that segment on price. What follows is a buyer's walk-through of what the published specification supports, where the limits are, and which questions you should have answered in writing before you transfer any money.

Overall dimensions are 5250 x 1900 x 2675 mm — compact enough for tight market streets.

What "4.5T" means on this truck

Read the two weight lines together, because they tell you the real story. Kerb weight is 2165 kg and rated payload is 2200 kg, which puts the loaded vehicle at roughly 4.4 tonnes and explains the 4.5T class label. A payload-to-kerb ratio close to one-to-one is healthy for a light truck: it means you are not paying to haul around chassis weight you cannot bill for.

The box is the other half of the equation. Internal dimensions are 3330 x 1750 x 1750 mm, which works out at around ten cubic metres of load space. On paper ten cubic metres sounds generous. In practice, whether you hit the weight limit or the volume limit first depends entirely on what you carry, and that single distinction decides whether this is the right truck for you.

"Ten cubic metres of box and 2.2 tonnes of rating: light goods fill the box first, building materials hit the weight limit first. Know which one you are."

Load it by volume or by weight — never both

This is the question that catches new buyers out. Farm produce, sacked goods, market merchandise and light packaged freight fill the box comfortably at well under 2200 kg — that is what this truck does best, and it is where the ten cubic metres genuinely pays. Sand, gravel and bricks are the opposite problem: a level load across the box floor would be several times the rated payload, so dense building material has to be treated as a half-load proposition.

3330 x 1750 x 1750 mm internal: roughly 10 cubic metres, but only 2.2 tonnes of legal payload.

The TM2 is specified for construction hauling as well as market and farm work, so the honest reading is that it suits construction material in modest quantities — bagged cement, blocks moved in partial loads, tools and site supplies — rather than full bulk aggregates. If your daily work is moving bulk sand or crushed stone in volume, you need a heavier rigid, and no amount of careful loading changes that arithmetic.

Rear dual tyres are listed, which matters more than it sounds. Doubling up at the rear gives you redundancy if a tyre is lost on a rough track and extra contact patch when you are running near the rating. ABS is fitted. Confirm with the dealer exactly which tyre size is supplied, since the sheet lists the configuration rather than the size, and you will want to know local availability and replacement cost before the first puncture.

Engine and gearbox: small, simple, serviceable

Power comes from the Yunnei D19 diesel, listed at 116 hp, certified to Euro II. The D19 is a small-capacity four-cylinder used widely across Chinese light commercial vehicles, and for a buyer in West Africa the appeal is not performance — it is that the engine is common, mechanically simple and understood by general mechanics rather than requiring dealer-only diagnostics.

The gearbox is a Wanliyang five-speed manual, model 5G32. Five ratios behind a small diesel is the right count: close enough to keep the engine in its working band when loaded, simple enough that a rebuild is cheap. There is no automatic option listed here, so if your drivers are unaccustomed to manual transmissions, budget for training or adjust your hiring.

Body, cab and day-to-day usability

The body is listed as non-bearing, meaning a separate chassis frame carries the load and the box mounts on top. That is the correct construction for a truck that will be worked hard on rough tracks: the frame takes the twisting, the box takes the cargo, and damage to one does not automatically condemn the other. It also makes box repair or replacement a local bodybuilder job rather than a structural rebuild.

The cab is single row with seating for two, and the wheelbase is 2880 mm. Short wheelbase plus 5250 mm overall length and 1900 mm width is exactly the combination you want for crowded city streets and market access — it will turn and park where a larger rigid simply cannot. The trade-off is ride: short-wheelbase light trucks are busy over broken surfaces. Ask for a loaded test drive on the worst road you actually use.

"A 2880 mm wheelbase buys you access. It costs you ride comfort. Test it loaded, on your worst road, not on the dealer's smooth yard."

What it costs, and how the deal is structured

The figures published are a listed price of 15,000 USD and an FOB reference of 8,900 USD. The gap between those two numbers is where shipping, insurance, destination charges and margin sit, so never compare suppliers on the headline figure alone — ask for a landed cost to your named port before anything else.

Payment terms are stated plainly, which is worth more than it appears: bank transfer, 30 per cent in advance and the remaining 70 per cent before delivery. The manufacturing cycle is 45 working days counted from receipt of payment, not from the order date — so your international transfer time sits on top of that 45 days. Build your cash-flow plan and your revenue start date accordingly.

A 12-month product warranty is included. That is stated as a product warranty rather than a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper programme, so ask specifically what it covers, whether wear items are excluded, how claims are handled in Ghana, and what parts stock exists locally. A twelve-month term with no local parts supply is worth considerably less than the same term backed by a stocked distributor.

Emission rating and Ghanaian import clearance

This is the single biggest risk on the sheet. The TM2 is declared Euro II with the Yunnei D19, the entry-level emission rating in the range and a large part of why the truck can be priced this competitively. Import, age and emission requirements in West Africa have been tightened over time and are applied differently to new and used vehicles, so do not assume the rating on the spec sheet is sufficient for your clearance.

Market transport is where this truck earns: volume goods, frequent short trips, tight access.

Send your port and intended registration authority to the seller and get written confirmation of what documentation will accompany the shipment before you pay a deposit. A truck that cannot be registered is not a cheap truck at any price. The full configuration and price list is on the Foton W3 TM2 product page, and that is the right place to start the documentation conversation.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Will 2200 kg payload handle sand and bricks?

Not in volume. The box gives around ten cubic metres, but bricks, sand and gravel reach 2200 kg long before they fill it — a level load of sand would be several times the rating. Treat dense building material as a half-load job. Farm produce, sacks and market goods fill the box at well under the limit, and that is what this truck does best. Rear dual tyres and ABS help when you run near the rating.

What are the payment terms and build time?

Bank transfer, 30 per cent in advance and 70 per cent before delivery. The manufacturing cycle is 45 working days from receipt of payment rather than from order date, so add your transfer time to the schedule. A 12-month product warranty is included, while freight, insurance and destination charges are quoted separately from the unit price.

Does Euro II clear Ghana vehicle import rules?

It is the entry-level rating in the range and the main reason the price is this competitive — but do not assume it is sufficient. Import, age and emission requirements in West Africa have been tightened and are applied differently to new and used vehicles. Give the seller your port and intended registration authority and get written confirmation of the documentation that will ship with the unit.

Is this the right truck for a mixed workload?

If your week is mostly market goods, farm produce and light site supplies, yes — the box volume and the tight turning circle are real advantages, and the running costs are low. If a large share of your work is bulk aggregate, you will be overloaded or under-delivering on every trip, and a heavier rigid is the correct buy. Be honest about the split before you order.

"Cheap to buy and cheap to run are two different claims. The second one depends on parts support and on loading it within its rating."
