Cold-chain failure in Vietnam is rarely the reefer unit. It is the chassis underneath it. A frozen-fish or fresh-produce run from a MekongDelta pack house to a Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City distribution centre is long, hot, and unforgiving of a truck that cannot keep a steady speed with a heavy, insulated box on the back. The body does the cooling; the chassis has to deliver it without cooking the compressor drive or the driver.
This article covers one scenario only — cold chain and refrigerated transport in Vietnam — and one model, the Foton Auman MA5 6×2 configured for fresh-food and warehouse work (listing id 96). Every figure below is from the published specification. Where the sheet does not state a number we need — most importantly the reefer unit and the internal box dimensions — we say so plainly rather than invent one.

The MA5 runs a Dongfeng Cummins ISD6.7 — a 6.7-litre, 6,700 cc diesel — making 198 PS with 970 Nm of torque, driven through a Fast 8JS118TC-B eight-speed gearbox (listed as F-8MT, with PTO available). That is a sensible power band for a 22-tonne refrigerated rigid: enough to hold highway speed with a loaded, insulated body, without the fuel and tyre appetite of a bigger engine. The final drive is 5.286, a moderate ratio that favours pulling away with weight over top-speed cruising.
Read against the scenario, this is a coastal and intercity volume hauler, not a mountain climber. Vietnam's long national-route runs are exactly where a 198 PS six-speed-plus-eight chassis earns its keep. If your routes are short urban loops, the ratio is slightly steep but acceptable; if you are climbing regularly into the Central Highlands with a full box, ask the supplier whether a different axle ratio is offered.
GVW is 22,000 kg. The front axle is rated at 6.5 tonnes and the middle/rear axle group at 13 tonnes, on an 11-wheel layout. Wheelbase is 5,900 + 1,350 mm and the frame section is 286 mm. Overall vehicle dimensions are 11,590 × 2,495 × 2,810 mm (length × width × height) with a body width of 2,200 mm and a flat-roof Extended Cab carrying two seats.
The 260-litre diesel tank is adequate for a day of regional runs; for a full north–south leg you will plan a fuel stop. Brakes are air brakes, front and rear drum, with ABS. Suspension is leaf spring throughout, which is the right choice for a steady, heavy box body.

This is the honest gap in the data. The listing describes the truck as a refrigerated / fresh-food / warehouse body application and is sold as a complete vehicle (status: Complete Vehicle, announcement model BJ1356VRPHP-AA). But the published specification does not state the refrigeration unit make or model, the temperature range it holds, the insulation thickness, or the internal cargo-box dimensions. The "inner dimensions of cargo box" field is blank on the sheet.
For a cold-chain buyer that is the single most important number after the chassis rating, because internal volume and the floor rating decide how many pallets of shrimp or how many crates of mango you actually move per trip. Do not assume a body size from the overall length — the cab and chassis take a large share of the 11.59 metres. Get the box internal dimensions and the reefer specification in writing from the supplier before you commit, and confirm the body is built to the temperature class your product requires (chilled versus frozen are different insulation and compressor duties).
Emissions are Euro IV with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) route, and the truck is Left-Hand Drive, matching Vietnamese traffic. Euro IV is an established standard for imported commercial diesels in the region, but emission rules change and local registration can hinge on the exact certificate line. If your operating permit or import licence requires a specific standard, match it to this figure before ordering — the SCR system also means you must plan for AdBlue availability on your routes.
Vietnam caps axle load around 10 t on a single axle and 24 t on a tandem, with gross combination weight near 45 t, enforced by the Directorate for Roads on the main corridors. Vietnam is an export powerhouse moving electronics and garments from the north and the Mekong. The practical catch is that the container traffic and the wet-season roads mean the axle distribution has to be right at the gate. The core business is export and distribution freight, and the climate and the road mix mean the axle distribution has to be right at the gate.
For a reefer the weight discipline matters doubly, because a refrigerated body and the diesel for the unit eat into the legal payload before the first carton goes on, and a breakdown mid-run is spoilage, not just downtime.
In Vietnam the reference vehicle is a Japanese truck — Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate and are often locally assembled — with Sinotruk and Shacman as the main Chinese competition. The Japanese brands win on parts density and service reach, but the new Chinese truck wins on warranty and price. Japanese and Korean trucks dominate, and Foton has to pitch on price and a growing service network. Foton’s pitch is a modern truck at a value price with a growing parts network.
Get the internal box dimensions in writing. The published sheet leaves cargo-box internal dimensions blank. Confirm length × width × height before you promise a pallet count.
Specify the reefer unit and temperature class. The listing names no refrigeration make, model or temperature range. State chilled versus frozen clearly, and confirm the unit is supplied and warranted.
Confirm the Euro IV / SCR certificate. Match the emission standard to your import permit, and plan AdBlue supply on every route.
Check the 260-litre tank against your longest leg. Fine for regional work; a full north–south run needs a fuel plan.
Verify the body width option. The sheet lists 2,200 mm body width with mirror options for a 2,600 mm box. Confirm which width your routes and loading docks accept.
The MA5 is listed as a complete vehicle with a named announcement model, which keeps import straightforward. The $34,300 price is the published listing figure and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — the refrigerated body, duties and freight sit on top. Start from the chassis that matches your route, then pin down the box and reefer before you pay.
