Aumark S 8.5T: Choosing the 3,800 mm Wheelbase Over the 3,360 mm

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

The 8.5-tonne class is where a lot of fleets end up after trying both smaller and larger: big enough to take a real pallet load, small enough to run on city streets without a permit conversation. Foton builds this chassis in two wheelbases, and choosing between them is the first decision you have to make — because it decides whether you are buying for volume or for frequency. We worked through the specification for the Aumark S 8.5T with the 3,800 mm wheelbase, the version aimed at intercity and wholesale distribution in Africa and Central and South America, and the numbers make the choice unusually clear.

3,800 mm or 3,360 mm: the decision that shapes everything

This chassis is offered in both wheelbases and the difference is not cosmetic. The 3,800 mm version carries a flatbed measuring 5,140 × 2,100 × 550 mm and is quoted at 5,085 kg of payload. The 3,360 mm version turns tighter and is easier in congested markets and narrow streets, but gives up body length and load area. Put plainly: if you are paid by volume, the longer chassis earns more; if you are paid by drops per shift, the shorter one saves time.

Overall dimensions are 6,920 × 2,135 × 2,320 mm as a chassis and 6,955 × 2,270 × 2,370 mm as a flatbed. Both stay comfortably under seven metres, so this truck remains usable on urban routes while carrying a body that will take a proper row of pallets. Gross vehicle weight is 8,500 kg and the payload class is quoted at 7.5T — again, note that the class name and the real payload are two different numbers.

"The 3,800 mm chassis pays you in volume; the 3,360 mm one pays you in drops. Work out which currency your customers actually use."

The payload arithmetic, done properly

This is one of the few sheets that gives you kerb weights, so use them. The flatbed weighs 3,220 kg against an 8,500 kg GVW, leaving 5,085 kg of payload. The chassis cab weighs 2,830 kg, which leaves more room for a body — but you still have to subtract the body itself, the driver and 160 litres of fuel. Axles are rated 2.85 t front and 6 t rear, so load distribution matters as much as the total.

A 6 t rear axle on an 8.5-tonner is generous, and it is what makes the longer wheelbase viable: a 5,140 mm body puts a long load line over the rear axle, and the rating absorbs it. Even so, ask for the weighed figure for your exact specification rather than working from the class name, and have the dealer confirm the split for your typical pallet layout.

Cummins power, ZF gearbox and a 4.33 axle

The engine is the Foton Cummins F3.8s3141, 3.76 litres, rated at 105 kW with 450 N·m of torque, built to Euro III and fitted with a dual-stage silicon oil fan. Behind it is a ZF 6S558 six-speed manual, driven through a φ362 × φ195 single-plate dry diaphragm clutch with pneumatic-hydraulic actuation. The rear axle is an NPR unit rated 6.0 t with a 4.33 ratio.

Six speeds and a 4.33 ratio on an 8.5-tonner is a balanced specification: tall enough for the 110 km/h maximum speed to be genuinely usable on intercity legs, short enough that a loaded pull-away from a junction does not need first gear and a prayer. The Cummins F3.8 is the engine to have here — it is one of the most widely supported light commercial diesels in the markets this truck is sold into, which matters more for downtime than any performance figure.

Brakes: load sensing valve and an exhaust brake

Service brakes are front and rear drum air brakes, the parking brake is an air-cut brake, and there is an exhaust brake as an auxiliary retarder. Brake control is a load-sensing proportioning valve, with ABS listed as optional. That combination is worth unpacking, because it is more sophisticated than the price suggests.

The load sensing valve varies rear brake force with the load on the rear axle, so the truck does not lock its rear wheels when running empty — the classic cause of skids on distribution trucks that spend half a day without cargo. The exhaust brake is a genuine cost item on intercity work: it saves service brake wear on long descents and gives a driver better control at weight. ABS is optional, so decide at order stage whether your fleet policy requires it.

"An exhaust brake and a load sensing valve on a truck at this price are two items that quietly reduce your brake bill and your skid risk."

Cab, chassis and what to specify at order stage

The cab is a single row, 2,060 mm wide, seating three, with a manual flip mechanism, power steering via a recirculating-ball box, fabric luxury seats, MP3 entertainment and manual windows and mirrors. The frame is riveted at 70/62 × 70 × 10/12 mm with 3 leaves at the front and 8+6 at the rear. Tyres are 7.50R16 tubeless and the tank is a 160-litre aluminium alloy unit — larger than the 120 L fitted to some sibling builds, and sized for long intercity legs.

The options list is where you should spend deliberately: air conditioning, MP5 with a reverse camera, daytime running lights, a roof fairing, a stabilizer bar, and central locking with power windows and a remote key. For a truck doing intercity freight, the roof fairing and stabilizer bar are the two that pay back in fuel and in driver fatigue. Options must be built with the vehicle, so list them at quotation stage.

Markets, emission and the price

This configuration is specified for Egypt and Tunisia in Africa and for Euro III regions, with Central and South American markets including El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Paraguay also named. At USD 16,732 list, it undercuts European and Japanese 8.5-tonners substantially, and the money shows up in the right places: a Cummins engine, a ZF gearbox, an NPR axle, air brakes with an exhaust retarder and a 160 L tank.

The one item to resolve before money moves is emission. This truck is Euro III, which is the configuration specified for those markets, but import rules in North Africa have been moving. Verify the current standard with your authority before you commit, because the emission level is fixed when the engine is built — and ask the dealer to confirm what is registrable at the time of your order rather than assuming it.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Should I take the 3,800 mm or the 3,360 mm wheelbase?

Take the 3,800 mm if volume matters more than manoeuvrability: it carries the 5,140 × 2,100 × 550 mm flatbed and a quoted 5,085 kg payload, which suits intercity and wholesale distribution. The 3,360 mm version turns tighter and is easier in congested markets and narrow streets. If your routes are mostly urban the shorter chassis saves time; if you are paid by volume, the longer one earns more.

How much payload does the 8.5 t Aumark S carry?

On the flatbed, kerb weight is 3,220 kg against 8,500 kg GVW, leaving 5,085 kg of payload; the chassis cab at 2,830 kg leaves more room for a body, but you must subtract the body, driver and 160 litres of fuel. Axles are rated 2.85 t front and 6 t rear, so load distribution matters as much as the total. Ask for the weighed figure for your exact specification.

Is Euro III still importable in Egypt and Tunisia?

This truck is Euro III, which is the configuration specified for Egypt, Tunisia and several Central and South American markets. Import rules in North Africa have been moving, so verify the current standard with your authority before you commit, because the emission level is fixed when the engine is built. Ask the dealer to confirm what is registrable at the time of your order rather than assuming it.

Which options are worth paying for?

For intercity work, the roof fairing and the stabilizer bar are the two that pay back, in fuel and in driver fatigue respectively. Air conditioning matters in Egypt, Tunisia and the Caribbean markets this truck is sold into. The MP5 with reverse camera is worth having if drivers work alone in tight yards. All options must be built with the vehicle, so list them at quotation stage.
