Foton Toano High-Roof Cargo Van: 5,990 mm of Load at 3.5T

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Last-mile delivery economics are brutally simple: the van that cubes out before it weighs out is the van that makes money. The Foton Toano high-roof cargo van is built on exactly that premise — 5,990 mm of load length under a high roof, a 3.5-tonne gross weight, a 2.5-litre Foton diesel and a six-speed manual. Specified for the Ivory Coast market, it is aimed at urban express delivery and parcel work where volume matters more than outright speed. This review goes through payload, powertrain, brakes and running costs, and flags the four things the sheet leaves open.

The Toano measures 5,990 × 2,000 × 2,700 mm on a 3,750 mm wheelbase, with body-coloured bumpers.

Payload: do the subtraction before you buy

Kerb weight is 2,510 kg against a 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight. That leaves roughly 990 kg before you subtract the driver, fuel and any racking, shelving or partitions you fit. Work that out on your own operation: a driver and passenger, a full 80-litre tank and a plywood-lined cargo bay eat into that margin quickly. For parcel and e-commerce work the good news is that the body normally fills before the weight limit is reached — which is precisely where the high-roof envelope earns its keep.

"Calculate payload after the driver, the fuel and the racking — not from the brochure. That margin, not the length, decides whether the van fits your operation."

The load length is the headline: 5,990 mm of cargo box in a vehicle registered at 3.5 tonnes gross. That combination — big volume, light-duty plating — is what makes it attractive for urban express delivery, and it is also why you must weigh a representative loaded van on a bridge before you finalise your route planning. Overloading a 3.5 t van is not a paperwork problem: it changes braking distances, tyre loading and your insurance position.

Powertrain: 2.5 litres, 380 Nm, 3.727 final drive

The engine is Foton's own 4F25TC2, built by the Beijing Foton Engine Plant: 2,499 cc, listed at 116 kW with 380 Nm of torque, homologated to Euro III. It drives through a ZM6T82 six-speed manual from Zhongma (a Sino-American joint venture) and a drive axle ratio of 3.727. That ratio is the detail to note — it is a numerically fairly high final drive, which favours loaded pull-away and urban gradients over relaxed motorway cruising. For stop-start delivery work that is the right compromise; if your runs are mostly intercity at sustained speed, ask about alternative ratios.

Six speeds in this class is worth having. It lets the engine sit in its torque band on urban arterials while still giving a relaxed top gear for the ring road, and it reduces the constant shifting that wears drivers out on dense routes. The sheet does not publish gear ratios or a governed top speed, so if your depot-to-depot runs involve sustained highway work, ask the dealer for both.

Brakes, suspension and tyres for city duty

Braking is front disc and rear drum with ABS and EBD — the combination that matters far more than power on dense last-mile routes, where the driver brakes dozens of times per hour and the load shifts every time. Suspension is front MacPherson independent with a rear dependent leaf spring pack of 3+1 leaves. Independent front suspension gives better steering precision and ride over broken city pavement; the leaf-sprung rear carries the load and is cheap and simple to repair when a bush or a leaf finally goes.

Electrically adjustable, heated and defrosted mirrors with integrated turn signals are standard.

Tyres are 215/75R16C in a 10-ply rating (116/114 load index), five of them including the spare. A 10-ply commercial casing is what you want under a fully loaded 3.5 t van on kerbs and potholes; lighter car-derived casings fail early in this duty. The fuel tank is 80 litres, which on urban delivery cycles is generous — you will refuel on time rather than route-plan around the tank.

Cab, driver comfort and specification level

Seating is for three, in a semi-enclosed cab, with front heater and air conditioning fitted as standard — not an option to negotiate for. In West African heat that is a driver-retention item rather than a comfort extra, and it is worth saying plainly: the cheapest van on the sheet becomes the most expensive one if drivers leave after a season. Infotainment is MP3 only, so budget for a phone mount and a Bluetooth unit if your dispatch runs through driver handsets.

Exterior specification is better than the price implies: body-coloured front and rear bumpers, and electrically adjustable, heated and defrosted exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals in body-coloured covers. Those mirrors are a practical benefit on pre-dawn deliveries in a rainy season, and the body-coloured trim means your livery wraps cleanly without a contrast plastic panel to work around.

Price, homologation and the right-hand drive question

The listed price is USD 23,792 against an FOB figure of USD 18,400. FOB excludes freight, insurance, inland delivery, duty and registration, so build a landed-cost figure before you compare it against anything in your market. Against a European large van of similar volume, the capital saving is the whole argument — the counterweight is residual value and parts familiarity, both of which you should weigh over your intended holding period rather than at purchase.

Foton Toano cargo van in urban delivery service
Sized for urban express delivery: volume-first, 3.5 t plated, easy to park and to load.

This Toano is Euro III and left-hand drive, specified for the Ivory Coast market. Two consequences follow. First, the emission level accepted depends on your registration authority, so confirm at enquiry stage whether Euro III clears import and registration where you operate. Second, right-hand drive is a separate build — it is not a conversion — so if your market drives on the left, say so at the very start of the enquiry. Neither can be changed after the vehicle is built.

"Emission tier and drive side are fixed at order. Get both wrong and no amount of discount afterwards makes the van registerable."

Which operator should buy it

The Toano suits parcel and e-commerce fleets, retail distribution and any urban express operation where parcels are bulky but not heavy: the high roof and 5,990 mm load length do the work, and the 3.5 t plating keeps registration and driver-licensing simple. It suits less well if your payload is dense — building materials, beverages, spare parts — because you will hit 3.5 t long before the body is full, and a 7.5 t truck becomes the better tool. Before deciding, weigh a loaded example, then check every line against the Toano cargo van specification page and confirm emission tier and drive side for your market.

Questions buyers ask before signing

What real payload does a 3.5T Toano actually leave?

Kerb weight is 2,510 kg against a 3,500 kg GVW, so usable payload is what remains after driver, fuel and body fittings — that margin, not the length, is what decides whether the van fits your operation. For parcel and e-commerce work the body usually fills before the weight limit is reached, which is where the 5,990 × 2,000 × 2,700 mm high-roof envelope earns its keep.

Is the 2.5L diesel enough for loaded city routes?

The 2.5-litre 4F25TC2 produces 116 kW and 380 Nm through a 6-speed Zhongma manual and a 3.727 final drive, comfortably enough for stop-start delivery work at 3.5 t GVW including urban gradients. Front disc and rear drum brakes with ABS and EBD matter more than outright power on dense last-mile routes. If your runs are mostly intercity at sustained speed, ask us to check the ratio options.

Is the Toano Euro III, and does it come right-hand drive?

This Toano is Euro III and left-hand drive, specified for the Ivory Coast market. Right-hand drive is a separate build, and the emission level accepted depends on your registration authority — so give the destination at enquiry stage. Front heater and air conditioning are standard, along with electrically adjustable heated mirrors and ABS with EBD.
