A Peruvian long-haul operator runs one of the hardest freight profiles on the continent: the Panamericana along the coast is long and fast, then it climbs into the Andes on grades that punish brakes and engines alike. The single unit configured for this scenario is the Foton Auman EST-A 6×4 tractor. This article looks only at that one vehicle and the long-haul job it is built for.
The EST-A is a 26,000 kg GVW tractor on a 6×4 layout, with a 560 PS engine, a ZF automated gearbox and an integrated hydraulic retarder. There is no second model in this scenario to compare it against, so the useful work is in reading the specification line by line and flagging what the sheet does and does not tell you before you commit a deposit.

Power comes from a Foton Cummins X13NS5-560, a 12,900 cc six-cylinder rated at 413 kW / 560 PS at 1,800 rpm, with 2,600 Nm held across a 1,000–1,400 rpm band. Behind it sits a ZF 12TX2621TD in an aluminium case — a 12-speed automated manual — and the listing specifies it "with retarder". The auxiliary brake is an engine brake plus a hydraulic retarder. On the Andes descent out of the highlands, that retarder is the single most valuable line on the sheet: it takes the work off the service brakes and off the driver, where an overheated foundation brake is the fastest way to write off a loaded semi-trailer. The gearbox operation is automatic, which also helps on the long coastal cruise. On the Panamericana the 107 km/h top speed is a governed figure, not a target; the real economy comes from the 3.083 ratio holding low rpm at cruise and the retarder saving brake wear on every descent. A driver who trusts the retarder arrives with cool brakes and a clean logbook, which is the unglamorous edge a 560 PS tractor buys you on this route — the horsepower is the headline, but the retarder is the reason the truck comes back.
The rear axle is a 13 t (469) unit on a 3.083 final drive — a long-legged highway ratio built for cruising speed and fuel economy on the Panamericana, not for launching 80 tonnes from rest on a mine ramp. That is the correct priority for long-haul logistics. The fuel capacity is a 420 L + 260 L twin aluminium tank (680 L total), which is what lets a tractor run the coast-to-sierra leg without hunting for diesel. The chassis dimensions are 7,575 × 2,490 × 3,875 mm, the designed fifth-wheel load is 15,170 kg, and the top speed is 107 km/h.

The cab is a high-roof ESTA-2490 with a full-floating air-bag suspension, electric cab lifting, a high airbag seat, power heated rear-view mirrors and automatic air conditioning as standard — the long-haul comfort kit. The front axle is rated 6.5 t; the rear is the 13 t (469) unit with a 3.083 self-adjusting-arm ABS and air suspension (without lift). Tyres are 12R22.5-18 steering plus 445/65R22.5-20 on mixed-match aluminium wheels. The listing does not state the hand-drive; Peru is right-hand traffic, so confirm the truck is left-hand drive before you order, because the rest of the spec is clearly a left-hand-market cab.

The engine emission standard is listed as "China V", not a Euro numeral. China V is broadly equivalent to Euro V, but Peruvian customs and your clearing agent will want the equivalence stated in writing. Do not assume the badge is accepted silently — get the China V / Euro equivalence and the registration acceptance confirmed with the seller before you pay a deposit. The listing also notes "No Announcement for Overseas Models" for the homologation model, which is normal for an export-spec unit but another reason to confirm the paperwork matches your import permit.
For Peruvian long-haul the EST-A is specced around the two hardest parts of the work: the Andes and the distance. The hydraulic retarder on the ZF AMT is the Andes answer — on the descent out of the sierra it carries the braking load so the service brakes and the driver are not cooked, which is the difference between a safe run and a written-off trailer. The 3.083 final drive and the 680 L twin tank are the distance answer: a long-legged highway ratio for the Panamericana and enough diesel to cross a long leg without a fill. The high-roof cab with air-bag suspension is the driver-retention answer on multi-day runs, and the 560 PS X13 gives the reserve to pull the grades without living in the lower gears. The two items to settle before you sign are the China V badge — get the Euro equivalence in writing — and the hand-drive, which the sheet does not state, so confirm left-hand drive for Peru before the truck is built.
Peru enforces axle-load limits under the MTC (Supreme Decree No. 017-2021-MTC): 10 t per single axle, 18 t per tandem and 25 t per tridem, with gross vehicle weight capped at 46 t for articulated units and 38 t for rigid trucks. The catch is the terrain: the Central Highway up to La Oroya climbs past 4,800 m and is frequently restricted to 30–36 t, and bridge limits on the Pan-American Highway can drop to 32 t. Callao is the port, and mining — copper from the Andes — is the freight, so a truck bought for sea-level numbers loses power and legal capacity in the mountains, and SUTRAN weighs it at the pass.
For a long-haul rig the margin question is the GCW cap, which leaves little headroom once fuel and a full load are added — a tractor rated well above the legal train limit is mostly academic on Peruvian roads.
In Peru the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with Sinotruk and Shacman strong in the mining segment, European brands (Volvo, Scania) in the premium mining fleets, and Foton a newer entrant. The altitude is the differentiator: a fresh, correctly specced Chinese truck can outperform a tired Japanese one on the mountain grades, which is exactly where the pitch to a mining or intercity operator is won.
Confirm the hand-drive. The sheet does not state it; Peru is right-hand traffic, so confirm left-hand drive in writing.
Resolve the China V badge. Get the China V / Euro V equivalence and registration acceptance confirmed for Peru.
Match GCW to your train. GVW is 26,000 kg with a 15,170 kg fifth-wheel load; confirm your trailer and load stay within the rated combination.
Confirm ZF and retarder service. The aluminium-case ZF AMT with retarder needs ZF-capable support on your route; verify coverage.
Plan the 3.083 ratio to the road. It suits highway cruising; if your work includes steep grade launches, discuss the ratio with the seller.
The EST-A is listed as a complete vehicle at $62,750. That figure is the published listing price and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and any local bodywork sit on top. Start from the Andes descent, where the retarder earns its keep, then work backwards to the China V paperwork and the LHD confirmation.
