Refrigerated transport punishes optimistic purchasing more than almost any other segment, because the arithmetic is unforgiving: every kilogram of insulated body, every kilogram of refrigeration unit and every kilogram of tail-lift comes directly out of what you are allowed to carry. That is the frame to bring to the Foton Auman Galaxy 8X4 620HP refrigerated box truck. It is rated at 32 tonnes total mass, 11.5 tonnes vehicle weight and 20.37 tonnes rated load, with a 9.55-metre cargo box and a 1,000-litre aluminium tank. Those are strong numbers for the money. The two things you must resolve before signing are the price, which appears twice at very different levels, and the axle ratio.
The rated load is 20.37 tonnes against a total mass of 32 tonnes and a vehicle weight of 11.5 tonnes. On paper that is a healthy figure for a 9.6-metre box class chassis. In practice, the insulated box, the refrigeration unit and any tail-lift all come out of that allowance, and a deep-freeze body with a nose-mounted unit can consume a tonne or more before you load a single pallet.
Give the distributor your box build and unit model and make them calculate the real usable payload for your route, in writing. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake in cold chain purchasing, and it is entirely avoidable. Note also that the sheet lists the cargo box form as flatbed with a cargo box height of 0.6 metres, while the marketing describes a 9.55 × 2.45-metre box — so confirm whether you are buying a chassis-cab, a flatbed, or a finished insulated body, because those are three very different products.
Power comes from the Foton Cummins A13NS6B620 — known in Foton's own material as the Fukang 13L — an inline six-cylinder diesel of 12.9 litres producing 456 kW and 620 hp, meeting China VI. The transmission is the ZF 12TX2620TD, an AMT with twelve forward gears and four reverse gears in an aluminium housing.
An AMT on a refrigerated trunk is a genuinely sensible specification. Refrigeration duty already loads the engine continuously through the compressor, and a driver making frequent urban deliveries does not need to be working a clutch as well. Four reverse gears is unusual and useful for yard manoeuvring with a long box. Confirm with the distributor whether a retarder or hydraulic retarder option exists for this gearbox, because the sheet does not list one and a 32-tonne reefer working mountain grades will want engine braking.
"On a reefer, the compressor is already a permanent load. Take the clutch work out of the driver's hands as well."
Three ratios are offered on the 440 rear axle, and for motorway cold-chain work the 2.533 fitted as standard is the fuel-friendly choice. Choose 2.389 if your routes are flat and you run at a steady high average speed. The 2.643 only pays off if you regularly climb loaded grades or start on soft ground — and remember that refrigeration duty already loads the engine continuously, so you start with less spare torque than a dry-freight truck of the same power.
Give the distributor your GCW and your steepest gradient and make them confirm the ratio rather than accepting the standard. It costs nothing to get right at order stage and cannot be corrected economically afterwards.
The cargo box is listed at 9.55 metres long and 2.45 metres wide, in the 9.6-metre box length class, with overall body dimensions of 12 × 2.55 × 3.805 metres. That is a serious volume for a 32-tonne chassis, and it is what makes this truck interesting for high-volume, temperature-controlled work such as fresh produce or pharmaceutical distribution.
The 1,000-litre aluminium tank is the other specification that supports long legs between refuelling stops, and it matters more here than on a dry-freight truck: a reefer that has to detour for fuel is a reefer running late with a load that has a temperature window. Approach and departure angles are 17 and 11 degrees with front and rear overhang at 1.46 and 2.69 metres — worth checking against your depot ramps and any steep site access.
You can. The listing references domestic Kaixue 1200 units as the standard option, but the refrigeration package is quoted to your specification. Confirm the unit model, insulation thickness and any multi-temperature partition before the build starts, since all of it comes out of the 20.37-tonne rated load. If your operation needs a specific brand — for warranty reasons, or because your service network already supports it — say so at order stage rather than after the body is built.
Two more things to establish in the same conversation: how the unit is driven, and whether you need standby electric operation for overnight loading or for temperature hold during driver rest periods. The sheet does not specify either, and both are decisions you will live with for the life of the vehicle.
The cab is a high-roof extended unit, 2,525 mm wide, seating two, with manual air conditioning. Manual air conditioning in a truck at this level is a small disappointment and worth raising if your drivers operate in hot climates and sleep in the cab. Braking is air brake with drum brakes front and rear and an air-release parking brake; suspension is listed as 2/2/- leaf springs, and the version is described as the Cross-country Edition.
Top speed is 89 km/h, which tells you this is a governed, road-going machine rather than a fast one — normal for the class, but relevant if your operation relies on high average speeds across long distances. Front axle capacity is 6,500 kg per side, rear axle capacity 19,000 kg as a twin, and the frame section is 286 mm.
"Two prices on one page is not a discount. It is a question, and you ask it before the deposit moves."
The listing price shown for this vehicle is 65,000 USD. The product note at the foot of the same page says pricing is available on request and gives an estimated cost starting at ¥900,000, approximately 123,000 USD. Those figures differ by a factor approaching two. Do not guess which applies: ask the distributor whether the lower figure is a chassis-cab price, whether the higher one includes the insulated body and refrigeration unit, and what the delivered price is for your exact specification.
On value, the driveline is the reassurance: a Foton Cummins 13-litre engine and a ZF AMT are components your workshop can support and your parts supplier can source. Against a European refrigerated chassis of comparable capacity, the capital advantage is significant, and the trade-off is the same as it is across the range — do not assume a residual value the badge has not yet earned in your market. No country of sale is listed, so shipping, right-hand or left-hand drive availability and local homologation all need confirming before you commit.
