Bulk powder tankers are bought on a number that is almost always misunderstood. Thirty-five cubic metres sounds like a great deal of capacity until you ask what the product weighs, and then the conversation changes completely. With the Foton Auman ETX 9 8X4 360HP powder tanker the sheet is unusually honest about it: the 35 m³ tank is quoted for a medium density of 0.4 tonnes per cubic metre, the published value for charcoal powder. Cement and lime are far denser. If you are hauling either, you will reach the 13.57-tonne rated load long before the tank is full, and the whole business case has to be rebuilt around that fact rather than around the volume.
The declared rated load is 13.57 tonnes against a 31-tonne gross. The tank measures 8.4 × 2.45 metres with a volume of 35 m³. Multiply 35 by the published medium density of 0.4 tonnes per cubic metre and you get 14 tonnes — which is why charcoal powder is the declared transport medium on this sheet. It is the product that fills the tank at almost exactly the rated load.
For cement or lime, the arithmetic runs the other way. You will hit 13.57 tonnes of payload with the tank part-filled, and the extra volume is dead weight you are dragging around for nothing. That does not make the truck wrong — it makes it a charcoal powder, fly ash or similar low-density product specialist. Send the distributor the bulk density of your actual product and make them tell you the real payload per trip, in writing, before you order. If your product is dense, you should probably be looking at a smaller tank on the same chassis.
"Thirty-five cubic metres is a volume. Your payload is a weight. Only one of them appears on the weighbridge."
Power comes from the Foton Cummins ISGe5 360 — 11.8 litres, 265 kW and 360 hp, China V, with common rail fuel injection. The gearbox is the Fast 12JSD180TA (Q) with twelve gears, and the rear axle ratio is 4.8. That is a short ratio by long-haul standards, and it tells you exactly what this truck was specified for: the operating condition listed on the sheet is plains.
A 4.8 ratio does give reasonable low-speed pull, and the hardware will take the weight — a 320 mm frame and a 16-tonne cast steel rear axle are substantial. But sustained gradients are not what this build is declared for, and no amount of goodwill changes the gearing. Share your route profile with the distributor and ask whether a different ratio or power rating is available. If your discharge point is up a long grade, this is the conversation that matters most.
This unit is built to China V. Whether you can register it depends entirely on your market, and this is not a detail to leave to assumption. Many importers in Africa, Central Asia and parts of South America still accept China V; others now require China VI or an equivalent. Tell the distributor the country of registration and the axle and emission rules you have to meet, and make them confirm which emission level and tank specification they can supply.
Two related items belong in the same conversation. First, fuel quality: China V common rail equipment is more sensitive to poor diesel than older mechanical injection, so confirm what your site and your route can actually supply. Second, homologation: the vehicle announcement is BJ5313GFL-AB and the chassis model is BJ1319VNPKJ-AA, and your registration authority will want those references. Get them on the order documents.
The chassis is Foton Auman's own, from the Auman ETX series. The frame is 320 mm, the clutch is a Φ430 unit, and the steering gear is listed as domestic. Twelve tyres are fitted, with the specification allowing 12.00R20, 12.00-20, 11.00R20 or 11.00-20 — worth confirming which you are getting, because 12.00R20 and 11.00R20 differ in load capacity and in replacement cost across a fleet.
The leaf spring list is unusually long: 13/14/12, 10/10/10, 3/3/5, 3/3/10, 3/3/12 and 10/10/12 are all offered. That range exists because a bulk tanker's suspension has to be matched to how fully the tank is loaded and how rough the access road is. Do not let this one default — tell the distributor your typical load and site conditions and make them specify the pack. Front track is 2,020 mm per side, rear track 1,860 mm per side, with front and rear overhang at 1.555 and 2.595 metres.
The cab is the ETX-2490 high roof, which is a reasonable place for a driver to spend a shift that involves waiting at a silo. Beyond that, the sheet tells you nothing about the discharge system — and the discharge system is the entire point of a powder tanker. The compressor, the diesel engine or PTO that drives it, the discharge rate in tonnes per hour, the pipework diameter and the pressure rating: none of these appear on the specification.
Ask all of them. A tanker that holds the right volume but takes ninety minutes to discharge is a tanker that costs you a trip a day, and the compressor specification is where that is decided. Also confirm the number and position of the manholes, the fluidisation system, and whether the tank is rated for the product you actually intend to carry.
The listing price shown for this vehicle is 60,000 USD, while the product copy at the foot of the same page describes a competitive price starting from approximately 75,000 USD. Those figures do not agree, and you should not resolve the gap yourself. Ask the distributor whether the lower number is a chassis price, whether the higher one includes the tank body and discharge equipment, and what the landed cost is to your port.
On value, the driveline is the reassurance: a Foton Cummins 11.8-litre engine and a Fast twelve-speed gearbox are components most workshops in the target markets can support, and the 320 mm frame and 16-tonne cast axle are honest heavy-duty hardware. Trade that against an assumed residual value the badge has not yet earned, and price the truck on cost per tonne delivered. No country of sale is listed, so shipping, right-hand or left-hand drive availability and local homologation all need confirming before you commit.
The declared rated load is 13.57 tonnes against a 31-tonne gross, and the 35 m³ tank figure is quoted for a medium density of 0.4 tonnes per cubic metre, the value published for charcoal powder. Cement and lime are far denser, so you will reach the rated load long before the tank is full. Send the distributor the bulk density of your product and have them tell you the real payload per trip.

The specification lists plains as the intended operating condition, with 265 kW from the 11.8-litre ISGe5 engine driving through a twelve-speed Fast gearbox and a 4.8 rear axle ratio. That ratio does give reasonable low-speed pull, and the 320 mm frame and 16-tonne cast steel rear axle will take the weight, but sustained gradients are not what this build is declared for. Share your route profile and ask whether to change the ratio or the power rating.
