Is the Aumark S 8.4T 168 hp Light Truck Right for Central Asia?

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Twelve tonnes is the sweet spot for a fleet that does a bit of everything: city drops in the morning, an intercity run in the afternoon, building material when a site needs it. Get it wrong and you have either a truck too big for the streets or too small for the loads. The Foton Aumark S 8.4T 168 hp 4x2 light truck configured for Turkmenistan and Central Asia is a serious attempt at that balance, and this review works through the specification to see whether the payload, the driveline and the braking package justify the purchase.

8.4 tonnes of chassis payload — before the body

Start here, because it is the number most buyers misread. The chassis is rated at 8.4 tonnes of payload within a 12-tonne GVW. That 8.4 tonnes is what the chassis can carry — not what you get to load. Your body comes out of it first, and so do the driver, any crew, and a full 160-litre tank.

A 5,600 mm box with a floor, side boards and a tail lift will take several hundred kilograms before you put anything in it. That is not a criticism of this truck; it is true of every chassis-cab on the market. What matters is that you do the arithmetic before you buy rather than after. Send the dealer your body weight and have the split checked against the 3.6-tonne front and 8-tonne rear axle ratings — because it is possible to be within GVW and still overload an axle.

"Chassis payload is not payload. The body, the crew and the fuel all spend it before your first customer does."

Cummins engine, ZF gearbox: the two names that matter

The engine is a Foton Cummins ISF3.8s3168 — 3,760 cc, Euro III, producing 125 kW (168 PS) and 600 Nm. For a 12-tonner that is a healthy output, and the Cummins name brings the practical benefit that matters most in Central Asia: parts familiarity and service knowledge that exist independently of the vehicle brand's dealer network.

The gearbox is a ZF6S600 six-speed manual. This is the specification item that separates the Aumark S from cheaper trucks in the same class: ZF is a genuinely international transmission brand, and a six-speed ZF in a 12-tonner means a well-spread set of ratios, a precise shift and a parts and service path that is easier to find than an own-brand unit. If your drivers complain about gearboxes, this is where the money went.

The final drive is 4.875 on an 8-tonne rear axle. That is a pulling ratio rather than a cruising one — sensible for a truck expected to start loaded on a gradient and to work construction sites, and it pairs well with 600 Nm. If your work is almost entirely light, high-speed intercity running, ask whether a taller ratio is available, because the 4.875 will hold engine revs up at motorway speed.

Front discs and four-channel ABS: better than class standard

The braking specification is worth calling out. Air brakes with front discs and rear drums, controlled by a four-channel ABS system listed as 4S4M — four sensors, four modulators. On a 12-tonner working city routes with constant stops, front discs give a more consistent pedal and shorter distances than drums, and they resist fade on long descents, while four-channel ABS keeps the truck steerable under emergency braking.

Front discs with four-channel ABS — unusual at this weight, and worth having on city routes.

Keeping drums at the rear is normal and cheaper to run for load and parking-brake duty, so this is a sensible mixed specification rather than an odd one. For light, high-speed intercity work the advantage shrinks; for urban delivery it is worth having, and it is not something every competitor in this class offers as standard.

Body, cab and the working day

The optional cargo compartment measures 5600 x 2300 x 550 mm on a 4200 mm wheelbase — a long, useful deck relative to a 7,445 mm overall vehicle length. Five hundred and fifty millimetre sides make it a dropside rather than an enclosed box, so loading from either side is quick and general freight is easy to secure, but weather-sensitive cargo will need covering.

A 5600 mm deck with 550 mm sides — fast side loading, no weather protection as standard.

The cab is single row with seating for three. Three seats matter more than they sound: on market transport and construction work a loader or a mate rides along, and a two-seat cab forces a second vehicle. Standard equipment is integrated cooling and heating with manual air conditioning, an ordinary steering wheel with an MP3 unit, and manually adjustable, non-heated exterior mirrors. Confirm whether electric and heated mirrors are available — in Central Asian winters, heated mirrors are a genuine safety item.

"Three seats and front discs. Neither is glamorous, and both are what actually gets used every day."

Running gear and what it means on your roads

Suspension is leaf spring front and rear, nine leaves at the front and 8+6 at the rear, on a 234 x 70 x 6 mm frame section. The rear is a main pack plus a helper, which is the right arrangement for a truck that runs part-empty and part-loaded in the same day. Tyres are tubed L8.25R20-16 across six wheels plus a spare.

Regional logistics and intercity express are both listed duties for this configuration.

Note that these are tubed tyres, not tubeless. Tubed tyres are more repairable at the roadside and are a common choice where roads are rough and tyre service is basic — but they run hotter and are less forgiving of high-speed highway work than a tubeless equivalent. Ask whether a tubeless option is offered, and match the choice to where the truck spends its hours. Fuel capacity is 160 litres, which is modest for intercity work; if your routes are long, ask about a larger tank.

Euro III, LHD and the Central Asian import question

This Aumark S is supplied as a left-hand-drive Euro III vehicle, matching Turkmenistan's traffic side and the emission level currently accepted for commercial imports there. There is a maintenance argument for Euro III as well: mechanical injection is more tolerant of variable diesel quality than common-rail SCR engines and far simpler for local workshops to repair.

Urban delivery and market transport: frequent stops, tight access, mixed loads.

Import rules do change, so confirm with your registration authority — or send the details to the seller and have it verified before shipment. Getting an emission clearance wrong is the most expensive possible mistake on an import, and it is discovered after the money has moved.

Price and the value argument

The published figures are a listed price of 20,000 USD and an FOB reference of 16,600 USD, with freight, insurance and destination charges on top. Get a landed figure in writing. Against a European or Japanese 12-tonner the acquisition saving is significant, and the ZF gearbox and front disc brakes mean you are not simply buying a cheaper truck — you are buying one with recognisable major components.

The counterweight remains residual value, which you should model conservatively rather than assuming a percentage. And no fuel consumption figure is published here — ask for one, discount it, then measure it yourself in the first month. Put both questions on the Aumark S product page enquiry alongside your body weight.

Questions buyers ask before signing

How much payload remains after fitting a body?

The chassis is rated at 8.4 tonnes within the 12-tonne GVW, and your body comes out of that before you load anything. A 5,600 mm box with floor, side boards and a tail lift will take several hundred kilograms, and the driver, crew and a full 160-litre tank also count against GVW. Send your body weight and have the split checked against the 3.6-tonne front and 8-tonne rear axle ratings.

Is Euro III and LHD accepted in Turkmenistan?

Yes, this Aumark S is supplied left-hand drive to Euro III, matching the traffic side and the emission level currently accepted for commercial imports there. Mechanical injection also tolerates variable diesel quality better than common-rail SCR engines and is simpler for local workshops. Import rules change, so confirm with your registration authority before shipment.

Why front disc brakes with ABS on 12 tonnes?

On city routes with constant stops, front discs give a more consistent pedal and shorter distances than drums and resist fade on long descents, while four-channel ABS keeps the truck steerable under emergency braking. Rear drums are normal and cheaper for load and parking-brake duty. For light high-speed intercity work the advantage shrinks; for urban delivery it is worth having.

What should I confirm before ordering?

Four items: your body weight against the 8.4-tonne chassis rating, whether electric and heated mirrors are available, whether a tubeless tyre option or a larger fuel tank is offered, and confirmation of Euro III acceptance from your own registration authority rather than the seller alone.

"A Cummins engine and a ZF gearbox are the two components you can get serviced anywhere. That is the real argument here."
