Is the Aumark Series 5 4x2 136 hp Right for Urban Logistics Fleets?

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Buying a chassis-cab for urban logistics is a different exercise from buying a finished truck. You are not choosing a body, you are choosing an envelope — wheelbase, frame width, axle ratings, cab height — and then hoping the bodybuilder gets the rest right. The Foton Aumark Light Truck 12T 4x2 from the Aumark Series 5 is sold precisely that way: it ships with no cargo box and no side protection, only a splash guard. That makes the specification sheet unusually important, because everything you will live with for the next five years is decided by what is on it — and by one contradiction in the listing that you need to resolve before you sign anything.

The gearbox contradiction you must resolve first

The listing headline describes this truck as ZF automatic. The specification table says something else: gearbox model DC7J80TA, manufacturer Sinotruk Dachi, described elsewhere in the same sheet as a 7-speed manual transmission. Those two statements cannot both be true of the unit you receive, and it matters enormously for an urban delivery fleet — an automatic or automated transmission widens your driver pool and reduces clutch wear in stop-and-go traffic, while a manual is cheaper to buy and cheaper to repair.

Do not let this pass. Ask the dealer, in writing, which gearbox is fitted to the exact unit being quoted, and ask whether the alternative is available on this model code. If you are specifying a fleet around automatic operation for driver recruitment reasons, this single line item is the difference between a workable order and a very expensive disappointment.

"The headline says automatic and the spec table says 7-speed manual. Get that in writing before you sign anything else."

Engine: 136 hp and, crucially, 700 Nm

The engine is the ISF4.5S5185, built by Fukang Engine, a 4.5-litre diesel producing 136 hp and 700 Nm of torque, meeting Euro V through SCR after-treatment. Unlike many listings in this class, the torque figure is actually published here, which makes the assessment straightforward. Seven hundred Newton-metres behind a 3.909 drive axle ratio is a genuinely workable combination for a 12,000 kg GVW truck in stop-start traffic — it is geared for response rather than for top speed, which is exactly what city work needs.

The SCR route to Euro V has one operational consequence you must plan for: selective catalytic reduction needs low-sulphur diesel and regular diesel exhaust fluid top-ups. Where this truck is configured to sell — Chile, Peru and Argentina — check the sulphur content of the fuel your drivers will actually buy, not the specification at the pump near the port. Poor fuel quality will cost you more in after-treatment faults than the engine will ever cost you in servicing.

Axles, brakes and the loading discipline they demand

Front axle load is rated at 3.6 tonnes and the rear axle at 8 tonnes, on a drive axle ratio of 3.909. Brakes are air-operated, front and rear drums, with ABS fitted — a sensible, serviceable combination at this weight, and ABS is the one item on this sheet that directly protects you in urban traffic. Tyres are tubeless metric 245/70R19.5, seven of them including the spare, and suspension is leaf spring, three blades at the front and 4+3 at the rear, on a 234 mm frame section.

Those axle ratings are the limits to respect in daily operation. On a 4,800 mm wheelbase with a body you have specified yourself, it is easy to build a layout that puts too much weight over the front axle when the box is part-loaded, or too much over the rear when pallets are stacked against the headboard. Give your bodybuilder both axle limits in writing, ask for a weight distribution drawing, and then check the finished vehicle on a per-axle weighbridge before it enters service.

Cab, options and the driver- acceptance items

The cab is a flat-roof sleeper cab, 2,200 mm wide, seating two, with left-hand drive as the listed configuration. Standard equipment includes manual air conditioning, an MP3 entertainment unit, and manual windows and rearview mirrors. The options list is where an urban fleet should spend its money: central locking with power windows, optionally with electric and heated mirrors, electric air conditioning, and an MP5 unit with a multifunctional steering wheel.

Electric air conditioning is worth serious consideration if your drivers spend the day in and out of the cab with the engine running, and heated mirrors matter if your routes cross a mountain pass at night. Both are build options here, not retrofits, so specify them at quotation stage. A flange power take-off is also offered on the gearbox — which is the thing that makes a refrigerated body practical, since it gives you a mechanical drive for the reefer compressor.

"Options on this chassis are build choices, not dealer add-ons. Every comfort item you want has to appear on the order, not in the handover conversation."

Bodying it: what the envelope allows

Because this is a chassis-cab with no cargo box, the 4,800 mm wheelbase and the 8,250 mm overall chassis length define what you can build, and the flat-roof cab keeps overall height around 2,700 mm. That height is a genuine asset for depot and underground clearance, and it is why this configuration suits parcel carriers and refrigerated bodies rather than tall box work.

Send your bodybuilder the required internal dimensions and let them confirm the layout against the frame width and the axle limits. If you need a reefer, order the flange power take-off at the same time. If you are running an express parcel operation, confirm whether the rear axle option — front and rear drum type with a large speed ratio and self-adjusting arms — is worth specifying for your gradient, because self-adjusting arms remove a routine maintenance task from your workshop.

Markets, homologation and paperwork

This unit is configured for Chile and Peru, with Argentina also listed as a covered country, and it is supplied with a foreign tachograph and an air deflector. The listing price is $26,600 — confirm whether that is FOB and what it excludes, because freight, insurance, duty, homologation and the body build all sit on top and will dominate your budget on a chassis at this price.

Euro V by SCR is the standard accepted in Chile, Peru and Argentina, but the certificate is only part of the battle. Chile applies its own homologation and tachograph requirements on top. Share your registration authority's requirements with the dealer before ordering and get the paperwork matched in advance; a truck that arrives with the wrong tachograph or the wrong emission documentation is a truck that cannot be registered, and no amount of price advantage fixes that.

How we would specify it

  • Settle the gearbox first. Everything else — driver recruitment, clutch budget, resale — follows from whether you are getting a manual or an automatic.
  • Order the flange power take-off if there is any chance of a refrigerated body in this chassis's life.
  • Specify electric air conditioning and heated mirrors now, as build options, if you operate in hot or high-altitude markets.
  • Confirm the fuel sulphur story on your actual routes before committing to an SCR vehicle.
  • Match the tachograph and homologation paperwork to your registration authority before the truck ships.

For urban logistics and express delivery at 12,000 kg GVW, 700 Nm behind a 3.909 ratio on a compact 2,350 mm wide chassis is a coherent specification. It is not a highway truck and it is not trying to be. The Aumark Series 5 urban logistics chassis page is where you confirm the gearbox question and the options list.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Is 136 hp enough for 12-tonne urban delivery?

For city and express-parcel work at 12,000 kg GVW, yes. The ISF4.5S5185 produces 700 Nm and is paired with a 3.909 rear axle, which keeps the truck responsive in stop-and-go traffic rather than geared for top speed. It suits flat to moderately undulating routes; if you regularly climb steep ramps fully loaded, the 3.6-tonne front and 8-tonne rear axles on 245/70R19.5 tubeless tyres are the limits to respect. Give your average payload and gradient to the dealer and have them confirm.

Can I fit a refrigerated box on this chassis?

This is a chassis-cab unit — it ships with no cargo box, no side protection and only a splash guard, so the body is built to your order. The 4,800 mm wheelbase and 8,250 mm overall length define the body envelope, and the flat-roof sleeper cab keeps overall height near 2,700 mm for depot or underground clearance. The useful options here are the flange power take-off to drive a reefer compressor and the electric air-conditioning upgrade. Send your required internal dimensions and have the layout confirmed.

Will Euro V pass import rules in Chile?

The ISF4.5S5185 meets Euro V through SCR after-treatment, the standard accepted in Chile, Peru and Argentina, the markets this unit is configured for. Sulphur content in local diesel matters more than the certificate: SCR needs low-sulphur fuel and regular DEF top-ups to stay compliant and reliable. Chile also applies its own homologation and tachograph requirements, and this chassis can be supplied with a foreign tachograph. Share your registration authority's requirements and have the paperwork matched.
