Foton Auman GTL-E 6×4 90-Tonne Tractor for Senegal Ports: 400 HP Container Hauler

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Dakar's port is the hinge of Senegalese trade, and the work around it is repetitive, heavy, and unforgiving on a tractor. A container tractor spends its life backing under a box, pulling it a short distance to the yard or the inland depot, and doing it again — often fully laden, often in heat, often on surfaces that are more yard than road. The tractor does not need to be the fastest thing on the highway; it needs to be the most dependable thing in the queue, with the axle, the tank and the fifth wheel to keep the boxes moving.

This article covers one scenario only: port and container transport in Senegal. We look at a single listing, the Foton Auman GTL-E 6×4 90-tonne tractor (id 84), using only its published specification. One point needs a buyer's attention before ordering: the listing's recorded selling country is Nigeria, not Senegal, and that should be confirmed rather than assumed.

The GTL-E 6×4 tractor: 400 PS, 90 t GCW, 700 L aluminium tank, 13R22.5 tyres.

1. The powertrain: 400 PS, 90 tonnes, a 700-litre tank

The tractor is powered by a Foton Cummins ISG12 (Fukang engine), 11,800 cc, rated at 294 kW / 400 PS at 1,900 rpm, with 2,000 Nm of torque at 1,000 rpm. The gearbox is a Sinotruk HW-12MT (HW23712 iron), a twelve-speed manual. Gross combination weight is declared at 90,000 kg, with a tractor GVW of 25,000 kg and a middle/rear axle group rated at 16 tonnes. The front axle is rated at 7.5 tonnes.

For port work the headline number is the 700-litre aluminium fuel tank. A container shuttle runs short cycles all day, and a big tank means fewer fill stops and less downtime in the queue. The drive axle ratio is 4.2 — a sensible compromise between pull and cruising speed for the mixed yard-and-road running a port tractor sees. Tyres are 13R22.5 18PR on an 11-wheel layout, and the wheelbase is 3,300 + 1,350 mm with overall dimensions of 6,940 × 2,490 × 3,150 mm.

2. Cab, brakes and the things a driver uses daily

The cab comes with automatic air conditioning as standard, electric windows, central locking, airbag seats and manual mirrors. Brakes are air-operated with ABS. The frame is a 225/286 × 80 × (8+5) section, and the announcement model is BJ4259SMFKB-26. For a two-person cab doing shift work around the port, the automatic air conditioning and airbag seat are the items that keep a driver productive through a hot double shift, so they are worth more than a line on a brochure.

For shift work the two-seat cab is adequate rather than luxurious, which is honest for a yard tractor — the value is in the airbag seat and the cooling, not the trim. A driver who arrives at the box unheat-struck and unwobbled from the seat is a driver who backs under trailers without clipping them.

The 11-wheel 13R22.5 18PR tyre layout is the workhorse size for West African container work, and its ubiquity is the point: a flat at the gate is a phone call, not a stranded day. Confirm you can source that size locally and carry at least one spare on the tractor, because a container queue is the worst place to discover the size is scarce.

3. Emission standard: Euro III, and the Senegal port question

The tractor is declared Euro III. For Senegalese port and line-haul work that is typically registrable, but — as with the other West African listings in this batch — confirm it against your specific import permit and any port-authority or operator tender requirements, which sometimes specify a higher standard. If your operation requires Euro IV or above, this truck will not meet it, and that is a pre-order check, not a post-landing fix.

Trailer compatibility is the other practical check. The spec gives a 90-tonne GCW and the axle ratings but does not state the fifth-wheel height or the kingpin standard, and those decide whether your existing semi-trailers couple cleanly. A mismatch means fabricating adapter plates or re-setting the trailer — both eat into the first week of operation. Send your trailer specs to the seller and get the fifth-wheel geometry confirmed in writing.

4. The one field to confirm: destination

The listing's "selling country" field reads Nigeria, even though this article is written for Senegal. That does not mean the truck cannot be supplied to Senegal — these GTL-E tractors are regional configurations — but it does mean you should not assume the warranty, the support network, and the delivery terms you are quoted automatically apply to a Senegalese delivery. Confirm in writing that the unit is available for Senegal, that the support covers it, and that the price includes the correct destination handling, before you commit.

On total cost of ownership, the 700-litre tank and the twelve-speed box are the levers. The big tank cuts refuelling stops on the Dakar–interior run, and the twelve-speed lets the 400 PS engine sit at low rpm on the cruise, which protects diesel and clutch alike. Neither shows up in the sticker, but both show up in the monthly fuel and maintenance sheet — which is where a port fleet is actually won or lost.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Senegal

Senegal applies the ECOWAS harmonised axle-load standard — 10 t on a single steering axle, 18 t on a tandem and 24 t on a tridem, with gross combination weight capped around 50–55 t for a six-axle articulated rig. Dakar is the westernmost major port in Africa and the gateway for transit freight bound for Mali, so the Dakar–Bamako corridor is where an over-loaded unit is weighed. The city’s position as a stable regional hub makes compliance predictable, but the transit run into the interior is long and hot, and a truck that fails the weighbridge on the way out is a stranded asset.

For a container tractor the real exposure is the Dakar access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.

What Senegalese fleets already run

In Senegal the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate the second-hand market — with Sinotruk Howo and Shacman as the main Chinese competition and Tata on light rigid work. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density and driver familiarity but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty but has to build a parts channel that is still thinner than the Japanese network. Foton’s pitch is the middle ground, which is what a TCO-minded fleet buyer wants to hear.

5. Pre-order checklist

Confirm Senegal availability. The selling-country field says Nigeria; verify the unit is offered, supported and delivered for Senegal.

Check Euro III against your permit. If your import or tender requires Euro IV or higher, this tractor does not qualify.

Verify the axle split for your loaded box. 7.5 t front and 16 t rear against a 25 t tractor GVW and 90 t GCW — match to your typical container weight.

Confirm the fifth-wheel and trailer compatibility. The spec gives GCW and axle ratings but not the fifth-wheel height or kingpin standard; confirm it suits your trailers.

The GTL-E 6×4 tractor is listed as a complete vehicle at $47,520, with a 700-litre tank and a 90-tonne GCW that suits the heavy end of container work. Settle the destination and emission questions in writing and the rest of the specification is a dependable port-machine base. Prices shown are published listing figures, not landed costs — freight, duties and local fees sit on top.
