Same Six Photographs, Two Engines: GTL 6×4 Euro II at $43,736 Against Euro V at $57,293

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Open both listings and the first thing to notice is that nothing about the pictures helps. The six gallery frames attached to the $43,736 truck are byte-for-byte the six attached to the $57,293 truck. Same cab, same angle, same shot list. Everything that separates them sits in the parameter rows, and it does not separate the way the price does.

The totals at the end of those two wheelbase columns are worth reading before anything else: 5,200 mm against 5,175 mm, near-identical overall, but the split differs — 25 mm more between steer and drive axle on one, 50 mm less inside the bogie. Two chassis of very similar footprint, distributed differently.

Axis one — the emission route you are actually signing up for

One sheet says Euro II with a mechanical injection pump and no route field at all. The other says Euro V with the route field filled in as SCR, and immediately next to it a row that reads "Fuel Injection System: /" — a slash where the other sheet writes the words "Mechanical pump".

If your operation takes diesel from a drum, filters it on site and does not have a urea supply it can rely on, then Euro V with SCR is not a specification upgrade — it is a supply chain you are adding to the purchase. Take the Euro II sheet.

If your registration authority, financier or customer contract asks for a current emission certificate, then nothing else on this page matters and you take the Euro V sheet, urea included.

What is decidedly not a factor is torque at the bottom of the range in the abstract. The bigger engine does produce more of it — 2100 N·m against 1650 — but it peaks at 1,000 r/min while the smaller unit holds its figure across 1100-1500 r/min. For pulling away loaded on a loose ramp, the usable band often matters more than the headline number, and both have ample. Torque is the reason people buy up; it is rarely the reason to.

Axis two — the tyre size nobody reads twice

12.00R24 20PR drive against 12.00R20 16PR drive tread pattern. The dearer sheet is on a 20-inch rim with a 16-ply carcass; the cheaper one on a 24-inch rim with a 20-ply carcass. Those are not good-versus-bad — they are available-versus-not. A 12.00R20 is the common currency of African and Central Asian haul roads, stocked rough and retreaded locally. A 12.00R24 20PR is a heavier-rated casing, but in plenty of districts it is a size the roadside cannot supply, which makes it an inventory decision rather than a chassis decision.

If the fleet already runs other trucks on 20-inch wheels, standardise — take the 12.00R20 sheet and keep one size across the yard.

If the operation is buying its first units fresh, if the haul is genuinely abusive, and if you are prepared to hold two mounted spares per truck, take the 12.00R24 sheet and spec the inventory in from the start.

The suspension rows point the same way. One publishes 11 front and 14 rear leaves, a total of 25; the other 9 and 12, a total of 21. Frame section is identical at 225/320×90×(8+7) mm, and so are the axle loads and the 5.26 ratio. Nothing here contradicts the rest; one simply carries more steel against the load.

Axis three — a box 400 mm deeper

This is the one that should stop you. Both publish a 5,600 mm length and a 2,300 mm internal width. The difference is entirely in the third dimension: 1,500 mm against 1,100 mm. Taken from the published internal dimensions, that is 19.3 m³ of struck capacity on the Euro II sheet against 14.2 m³ on the Euro V one — 36 per cent more box on the cheaper truck, against the same 25,000 kg gross limit.

Which matters exactly when the material is not dense. Rock, ore and wet sand put the truck on its mass limit long before they reach the top rail, and the extra 400 mm then travels around empty all day. Topsoil, overburden, coal, dry gravel, demolition arisings and aggregates loaded dry are the opposite problem — they fill the box and leave the axles under their rating, and every extra cubic metre is a round trip you did not have to repeat.

If your dig is dense rock, the deeper box buys you nothing and may cost you — take either sheet on other grounds.

If your material is light or loosely packed, the cheaper truck with the 1,500 mm box is doing materially more work per cycle for 13,557 dollars less, and that is the strongest argument on this page.

The uncomfortable arithmetic

Read down those rows and something becomes plain: the cheaper sheet wins the box, the suspension count, the air-conditioning row and the price, and loses the engine, the emission route, the heated mirrors and the winter provisions. That is not a ladder with one truck above the other. It is two trucks built for two different sets of obligations.

The honest answer: if nothing about your registration, your financier or your customer contract requires a current emissions certificate, and your material is anywhere below rock density, the $43,736 sheet carries more of what a haulage operation actually consumes — box volume, suspension reserve, cabin comfort — for 13,557 dollars less. If any one of those conditions flips, stop reading and take the Euro V sheet, because no amount of extra box volume resolves a truck that cannot be registered.

All parameters are read from the two listings themselves. Box volumes are computed from the published internal dimensions on each sheet (length × width × height, struck, no heaping allowance) and no payload assumption is attached to either figure. Rows one sheet leaves blank are marked "not stated" rather than inferred. Emission route, option codes and market coverage lines are quoted as published. This article states no import regulation, registration requirement or port procedure for any country, because neither sheet publishes one.
