Auman Galaxy 9 6x4 580 hp: Choosing Among 15 Versions Without Guessing

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Fifteen versions of the same 580 hp tractor is not a generous menu, it is a decision you have to make properly. The Foton Auman Galaxy 9 (Gaxaly 9) 6x4 is offered in fifteen configurations spanning USD 52,600 to USD 61,700, and the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive is not trim — it is gearbox, axle ratio, fuel capacity and climate hardware. If you are buying for express delivery or long-distance logistics, those four variables decide whether the truck makes money or merely looks impressive. Pull up the Auman Galaxy 9 6x4 580 hp tractor page next to your route map before you read further, because almost every question below is answered by which column you choose.

The engine is fixed; everything else is your choice

Every one of the fifteen versions uses the same engine: the Foton Cummins X13NS6B580, an inline six of 12.9 litres, rated 580 hp and 426 kW at 1,800 rpm. Maximum torque is delivered between 1,000 and 1,400 rpm, which is the band you actually work in when you are pulling 40 tonnes and the road starts to rise. Emission standard is China VI. That single fact carries a caveat you must deal with early: China VI is not automatically accepted as proof of Euro VI compliance, so send your target country to the dealer and get the emission documentation in your own registration framework before money moves.

Weights are consistent across most of the range. Vehicle weight is 8.5 tonnes (9.85 tonnes on the two BJ4259Y6DHL-19 retarder variants), total mass is 25 tonnes, and traction mass is 40 tonnes — 39.02 tonnes on the heavier pair. Top speed is 89 km/h throughout. Front axle load capacity is 7,000 kg and the rear axle group is rated 18,000 kg. Ten tyres are fitted, in 12R22.5 18PR on most versions and 12.00R20 16PR on the two that use the 16T Mercedes rear axle. ABS is standard across every version, and electronic stability programme is listed on the versions where it appears.

"The engine is the same in all fifteen. You are really choosing a gearbox, a ratio and a fuel tank — and you should choose them for the road, not for the price list."

Gearbox: ZF AMT or ZF 16-speed manual

Three gearboxes appear. The ZF 16S2530TO is a 16-speed manual with two reverse gears and an aluminium housing. The ZF 12TX2620TD and 12TX2621TD are 12-speed AMT units with four reverse gears, paired with the rotary AMT shifter Foton highlights as a first for the heavy-duty segment. The FAW 12JSDX260K is a 12-speed manual fitted to the two BJ4259Y6DHL-19 versions.

For a fleet with rotating drivers, the AMT is usually the correct answer. An automated box removes the clutch-skill variable, protects the driveline from missed shifts, and makes driver induction shorter — which matters when your problem is finding drivers rather than finding freight. For an owner-driver who keeps the same truck for years and knows every gradient on the run, the 16-speed manual gives closer ratio steps and direct control, and it is the cheaper option. Neither choice is wrong; the wrong choice is the one that does not match who is actually sitting in the seat.

One thing the specification does not state: which versions include a hydraulic retarder as standard. The pack names retarder variants explicitly and lists "optional retarder" for one version only. If your route includes sustained descents, confirm in writing whether the unit you are quoted has a retarder, because retrofitting one is far more expensive than specifying it.

Axle ratios: the line between express work and heavy starts

Five ratios appear across the range: 2.643, 2.733, 3.083, 3.364 and 3.86. This is the most consequential number on the sheet after the engine. Tall ratios of 2.643 and 2.733 suit flat express work, where you want low engine revs at cruising speed and your starts are almost always on tarmac. The 3.86 ratio belongs at the other end: heavy or hilly starts, mine and quarry access, or any operation where a loaded pull-away happens several times a day. The 3.083 and 3.364 options sit between them and are the safe default if you genuinely run a mixed profile.

"Tell the dealer your worst gradient and your typical gross weight. The ratio should follow those two numbers, not the one that happens to be in stock."

Fuel capacity varies just as widely: 630 + 130 L, 760 L alone, 760 + 300 L, 515 + 115 L, or 630 L, all in aluminium. If you run cross-border legs where fuel price and availability change every few hundred kilometres, the dual 760 + 300 L tanks are worth the premium. If you run regional work with a fixed depot, the single 760 L is usually enough and you keep the weight down. Note also that suspension differs: 2/3 leaf springs on most versions, 9/12 on the two heavier -19 models — another sign those two are the rough-road specification.

Cab, safety and driver acceptance

The cab is a high-roof, standard-floor unit seating two across two rows, with an air-suspension driver seat. Body height is 3.8 m on most versions, 3.51 m on the two -19 models and 3.87 m on one, and body width is 2.525 m throughout — worth checking against any height-restricted depots or ferry decks on your route. Inside, the manufacturer lists a 10-inch plus 12.3-inch dual LCD display, PM2.5 air filtration, one-touch start, and custom seats with massage and adjustable suspension.

Safety content is stronger here than on most trucks at this price: ABS is standard on every version, and the model offers a 360° panoramic driving assistance system, lane departure warning and forward collision warning, with AEBS emergency braking and fatigue monitoring available as options. For a fleet answering to a corporate safety policy, that list is the argument for the Galaxy 9 over a cheaper tractor. Confirm which of these are fitted to the exact version you are quoted rather than to the model range as a whole.

What it costs, and what to confirm before signing

Manufacturer's suggested retail prices run from USD 52,600 for the basic manual tractor up to USD 61,700 for the 580 hp AMT version; every version lists "Inquire for lowest price" for the local minimum, so the MSRP column is a ceiling, not a quote. Freight, insurance and local taxes are not included. Give the dealer your discharge port and ask for a landed figure before you compare it with anything else.

Two further items deserve a written answer. First, licensing: the record states an A2 driving licence is required, so check that against your local heavy-vehicle licence classes before you recruit drivers for it. Second, service: the pack does not publish service intervals or warranty terms for this model. Ask for the maintenance schedule, the filter part numbers, and the warranty in writing. ZF and Cummins components are widely supported, which is a genuine strength, but you still need the schedule on paper.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Which of the fifteen versions should I order?

Narrow it to three variables: gearbox, ratio and climate pack. AMT versions suit fleets with rotating drivers; the 16-speed manual suits owner-drivers who want direct control. Ratios run from 2.643 for flat express work to 3.86 for heavy or hilly starts. The Northern Edition adds an independent heat source for cold depots, while the Cross-country Edition targets rougher routes.

Does the China VI engine meet Euro VI rules?

Not automatically. This tractor is certified to China VI, which is not automatically accepted as proof of Euro VI compliance in every market. Registration authorities usually require documentation within their own framework, including on-board diagnostic and after-treatment evidence. Send your target country to the dealer and request the emission documentation they hold, or a quote for the configuration your authority accepts.

Why do versions range from USD 52,600 to USD 61,700?

The spread reflects driveline and comfort content. The basic tractor uses a manual gearbox and a single 760 L tank; moving up buys the ZF AMT, the 16-speed manual, dual 760 + 300 L tanks for long cross-border legs, a hydraulic retarder, the Northern Edition heat source, or Supreme trim with parking air conditioning and a 360° camera. Freight, insurance and local taxes are not included, so give your port for a landed cost.

Fifteen configurations share one driveline core: the X13NS6B580.

Is a 40-tonne traction mass realistic for my trailer?

The published traction mass is 40 tonnes (39.02 tonnes on the heavier -19 versions) against a 25-tonne total mass, so the arithmetic is clear enough. What you still need is the saddle specification — 90# on most versions, 50# on two — matched to your kingpin, plus confirmation that your trailer's axle loads sit inside the 7,000 kg front and 18,000 kg rear group ratings. Check the Auman Galaxy 9 specifications for the exact version and then confirm the combination with your dealer in writing.
