Foton Aumark for Ghana Urban & Regional Distribution: A 22-Tonne 240 hp Rigid for City and Intercity Runs

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Urban and regional distribution in Ghana is a volume game with a weight problem. The same truck that runs Accra deliveries in the morning is expected to haul a full load to Kumasi or Tamale by afternoon, and the operator needs one rigid that does both without a second vehicle. The constraint is not top speed; it is usable torque at 22 tonnes, a cab two people can live in, and a body long enough to matter.

This article covers one scenario for Ghana: urban and regional distribution. There is one Foton listing built for it, the Aumark 22-tonne 4×2, and every figure below comes from its specification sheet. Where a figure is absent from the sheet, we say so rather than guess.

Foton Aumark 22 tonne cargo truck configured for Ghana distribution
The Aumark 22 T: Yuchai 7,225 cc, 240 hp (177 kW), 900 N·m, Fast Gear 8JS105TA 8-speed, GVW 22,000 kg.

1. A 22-tonne 4×2: the right shape for the job

The truck is rated at 22,000 kg gross vehicle weight on a 4×2 layout, built on the EST-M platform. The wheelbase is 4,800 mm and the overall chassis dimension is 8,255 × 2,460 × 2,820 mm. Axle ratings are 5.5 t at the front and 10 t at the middle/rear, with seven tyres on tubeless 11R22.5. That is a long, stable rigid for palletised distribution, and the 4×2 keeps it light on tyres and simple to maintain versus a 6×2 or 6×4. For paved intercity runs plus city delivery, this is the economical shape.

One honest gap: the specification sheet does not state the inner cargo-box dimensions for this listing (the corresponding refrigerated version lists a 7,800 × 2,450 mm floor, but that is a different body). If you need an exact body length and volume, ask the supplier to confirm the cargo body on this specific model in writing before ordering.

2. Powertrain: 240 hp and 900 N·m on a proven eight-speed

The engine is a Yuchai YC6A240-33, 7,225 cc, diesel. The sheet gives the power as 240 hp (177 kW) and torque as 900 N·m, delivered through a Fast Gear 8JS105TA eight-speed manual (listed as F-8MT). The drive axle ratio is 4.875. That combination is well matched to a 22-tonne rigid: enough torque to launch a full load from a city junction, and an eight-speed box to keep the engine in its range on the long grades inland. The 4.875 final drive is a sensible middle ground — not so tall that it struggles loaded, not so short that it buzzes on the highway.

3. Cab, fuel and the things that cost you later

The cab is a 2,200 mm-wide half-bench layout with two seats and a flat roof — practical for a driver-plus-helper crew that returns to base nightly. Standard air conditioning is manual, with automatic air conditioning listed as an option, and the optional cab assembly adds central locking, power windows, and power and heated rear-view mirrors. The fuel tank is 200 L, a reasonable range for a 22-tonne truck on intercity runs where diesel stops are not always convenient. Brakes are front and rear drum on an air-brake system with ABS, which suits the weight and is straightforward to service.

4. Tyres, fuel tank and the running cost you feel daily

The numbers that decide your weekly operating cost are here. The truck runs on seven tubeless 11R22.5 tyres, a size that is common across West Africa and therefore cheap to source and easy to match at any regional tyre shop — which matters more than it sounds when a blowout strands a load. The 200 L fuel tank gives a sensible between-fills range for a 22-tonne rigid doing Accra-to-Kumasi-and-back loops, and the 4.875 drive-axle ratio keeps engine rpm contained on the highway without leaving the truck breathless in city traffic. Axle ratings are 5.5 t front and 10 t rear, on leaf-spring suspension front and rear, which is the durable, repairable choice for a truck that will see rough yard surfaces. None of this is exotic, and that is the point: the lower the specialisation, the lower your downtime. When you eventually trade or resell, a common-size, simple-axle rigid also holds value better than a one-off specification nobody else can service.

5. Emission standard and the registration question

This Aumark is listed at Euro II. For a 22-tonne heavy truck that is an old badge, and it is the most likely friction point at Ghanaian registration if your permit expects a newer standard. Confirm the emission level your paperwork requires and match it before you pay a deposit — do not assume it registers as-is.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Ghana

Ghana applies the ECOWAS harmonised axle-load standard through the Ghana Highway Authority and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), with weighbridges on the main trunk roads. The statutory maxima mirror the regional framework: 10 t on a single steering axle, 18 t on a tandem and 24 t on a tridem, with gross combination weight capped around 50–55 t for a six-axle articulated rig. Enforcement in Ghana is more visible than in some neighbours — the weighbridges on the Accra–Tema and Accra–Kumasi corridors are active, and overloaded trucks are regularly pulled off to shed weight at the operator’s expense. The Accra–Tema motorway and the stretch north to Kumasi are the two arteries every commercial truck must use.

For a distribution rigid the risk is the axle split — load the nose heavy and the steering axle is over before the gross weight approaches the rated figure, which is the most common cause of a fine on an urban trunk route.

What Ghanaian fleets already run

In Ghana the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck, and every new Foton is priced against it. Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate the second-hand market, with Sinotruk Howo and Shacman moving into the heavy end and Tata and Ashok Leyland holding the light rigid segment. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density and driver familiarity, but loses on age, odometer honesty and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean service history but has to build a parts channel that is still thinner than the Japanese network. Foton’s pitch in Ghana is the middle ground, which is what a TCO-minded fleet buyer wants to hear.

6. Pre-order checklist

Confirm the cargo-body dimensions. The sheet does not list the inner box size for this model. Get the exact length, width, height and volume in writing before you commit.

Check the Euro II acceptance. A 22-tonne Euro II heavy truck may not meet your import permit. Confirm the required emission level first.

Specify the air conditioning. Manual A/C is standard; automatic is optional. Write the choice into the order if it matters to your crew.

Match the axle load to your payload. Front 5.5 t, rear 10 t, GVW 22,000 kg. Confirm your typical loaded axle weights stay inside these ratings at the weighbridge.

This Aumark is listed as a complete vehicle, which keeps the import simple. The price above is the published listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and local bodywork sit on top. Buy the rigid that fits your route, then confirm the body size in writing.
