Foton Auman GTL 6×4 Dump Truck for Grenada Quarry Haulage: 430 HP, 55-Tonne Box, but Check the Steering Side

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Quarry and construction haulage in Grenada is a smaller, tougher niche than on the continent: short, steep runs from a pitside to a crusher or a port fill, dense loads of aggregate and slag, and roads that are closer to tracks than highways. The truck that does this is not a tractor; it is a 6×4 tipper with a steep final drive and a body sized for the material, not for show. The question is whether the one Foton tipper listing available is actually built for Grenada, or for somewhere else.

This article covers one scenario for Grenada: mining and quarry haulage. There is one Foton listing configured for it, the Auman GTL 6×4 55-tonne dump truck, and every figure below comes from its specification sheet. Two honest warnings before the specs: the sheet lists the truck's country of sale as Peru, not Grenada, and it is specified as left-hand drive — while Grenada drives on the left and imports are normally right-hand drive. Both points need resolving before you order, and we return to them at the end.

The Auman GTL 6×4: Foton Cummins ISG12 11.8 L, 430 hp, 2,000 N·m, Fast Gear 12JSDX240T(Q), final drive 5.26.

1. A 6×4 tipper built for weight, not speed

The GTL is rated at 50,000 kg gross vehicle weight on a 6×4 layout, on the GTL platform. The wheelbase is 3,575 + 1,350 mm and the overall chassis dimension is 8,290 × 2,490 × 3,400 mm, with a 2,490 mm body width. Axle ratings are 7.5 t at the front and 16 t at the middle/rear — a heavy rear group that is exactly what you want under a loaded aggregate body. The final drive is 5.26, a low, climbing ratio suited to launching a dense load up a pit ramp rather than cruising empty on a highway.

2. The box, and what it actually holds

The cargo box internal dimensions are listed as 5,600 (5,400) × 2,300 × 1,100 mm — the two lengths likely reflect a standard versus an extended body option, so confirm which one you are ordering. At the larger size that is roughly 14 cubic metres of payload space. Eleven tyres are specified on 12R22.5 mixed-use rubber, and the fuel tank is 350 L of aluminium alloy. For a tipper that works a short cycle and returns to base, 350 L is more than enough; the capacity matters more for a remote quarry than for a Grenadian pit.

3. Powertrain and the gearbox that matters on a ramp

The engine is a Foton Cummins ISG12 (full model ISGe3-430), 11,800 cc, producing 430 hp with 2,000 N·m of torque between 1,000 and 1,400 rpm. That flat, low-end torque curve is what a tipper needs: pulling away loaded from a standstill on a grade. The gearbox is a Fast Gear 12JSDX240T(Q) twelve-speed manual in an iron casing, and the 5.26 final drive backs it up. Brakes are front and rear drum on an air-brake system with ABS, the steering gear is a ZF8098, and the cab is a flat-roof, two-seat layout with manual air conditioning.

4. Tyres, tank and the running gear on a pit ramp

The details that decide whether this truck survives a Grenadian quarry are in the running gear. It rides on eleven 12R22.5 mixed-use tyres — a robust, high-load tyre suited to loose surfaces, and a size that a regional dealer can usually supply. The 350 L aluminium fuel tank is generous for a short-cycle tipper that returns to base, and the leaf-spring suspension front and rear, with a flat-roof two-seat cab, is the no-nonsense layout a pit truck should have. The 7.5 t front and 16 t rear axle ratings, combined with the 5.26 final drive, tell you the chassis is built to squat under a dense load and climb, not to cruise. On a steep, shifting access road this is the right philosophy; on a long highway run it would be the wrong one, so match it to where the truck will actually spend its life.

5. Emission and the two caveats that decide the order

The GTL is Euro III. That is registerable in many markets but, as always, confirm it against your Grenada import permit rather than assuming. The two bigger issues are the ones we opened with. First, the specification sheet states the country of sale as Peru, not Grenada — so confirm the supplier can deliver a unit destined for, and documented for, Grenada. Second, the truck is left-hand drive. Grenada drives on the left, and tipper operation on narrow quarry access roads is far safer and more legal in a right-hand-drive unit. Ask directly whether a right-hand-drive version of this GTL is available before you proceed; do not assume the Peru-spec left-hand-drive unit will be permitted or practical.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Grenada

Grenada applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Traffic Department. Grenada is a small, hilly island economy running right-hand drive. The practical catch is that the tight, hilly island roads and right-hand drive mean a nimble, correctly specced rigid fits better than a heavy unit. The core business is nutmeg, tourism and island distribution, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.

For a tipper the binding constraint is the haul from the pit to the trunk road, where the the road authority weighbridge is the point where an over-loaded unit collects its fine — and nutmeg, tourism and island distribution runs through here, so the box that fills to the headline weight on site can be over the axle caps before it reaches the highway.

What Grenadian fleets already run

In Grenada the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Japanese reconditioned trucks dominate, and Foton has to pitch on price and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

6. Pre-order checklist

Confirm the steering side. The sheet lists this truck as left-hand drive; Grenada drives on the left. Ask whether a right-hand-drive version is available and permitted before ordering.

Confirm the destination market. The specification states country of sale as Peru. Verify the supplier can document and deliver a unit for Grenada.

Pick the box length. The sheet shows 5,600 or 5,400 mm. Confirm which body you are buying and its actual volume.

Check the Euro III acceptance. Confirm the emission level meets your Grenada import permit.

The GTL is listed as a complete vehicle, which keeps import straightforward once the steering and destination questions are settled. The price above is the published listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and any local bodywork sit on top. Resolve the two caveats first, then spec the body you need.
