Auman EST-A 6x4 with ZF Retarder Reviewed for Peruvian Long Haul

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Two things about this truck will catch a careful buyer immediately, and neither should be waved away. The listing headline says 430 hp while the engine table certifies 460 PS, and the headline says long-haul heavy transport while the cab is specified flat roof. Neither contradiction is necessarily a deal-breaker, but both are the kind of detail that becomes expensive if you discover it after the truck lands. The Foton Auman EST-A 6x4 tractor is otherwise a well-considered machine with a genuine retarder option, and those two questions are worth resolving before anything else.

Start with the engine rating

The engine is the Cummins ISGe4-460 from the ISG12 series, an 11,800 cc diesel producing 331 kW / 460 PS at 1,900 rpm with maximum torque of 2,300 Nm at 1,100 rpm. That is a strong, low-revving torque figure and it is the single most useful number on the sheet for heavy work: 2,300 Nm arriving at 1,100 rpm means the engine is already pulling hard at the bottom of the usable range.

Emission standard is Euro IV, achieved through SCR. This is a meaningful step up from Euro III in terms of both complexity and running cost, and it brings an AdBlue requirement discussed further below. Get the dealer to confirm the certified power figure for the unit you are buying, in writing, especially given the 430 hp figure in the listing headline.

The gearbox is the ZF 12TX2421TD with an aluminium housing and an integrated retarder, running as a 12-speed AMT. This combination is the strongest argument in the truck's favour, because it addresses two separate fleet problems at once: an automated box removes driver skill from the shift-quality equation, and a hydraulic retarder takes heat out of the service brakes on long descents.

"A retarder on this box is not a comfort option. On a loaded Andean descent it is the difference between arriving with brakes and arriving without."

Brakes: discs all round, plus the retarder question

Brakes are air-operated with discs at both front and rear under ABS. That matters more than it sounds. Discs reject heat more consistently than drums and maintain their performance through repeated stops, which is what you want coming down a mountain road at 55,000 kg. Combine that with the retarder integrated into the gearbox and the service brakes stay cool and available for an actual emergency stop.

The practical payoff is lining and disc life on mountainous route profiles, plus driver confidence, but check the other side of the ledger: confirm disc replacement costs and availability in Peru, and ask the dealer for the recommended service intervals for both the air braking system and the retarder before you commit.

Is 3.083 right for 55 tonnes?

The final drive is 3.083, which is a tall, economy-biased ratio. With 2,300 Nm available from 1,100 rpm it is a defensible specification on long paved corridors at 55,000 kg GCW, keeping engine speed and therefore fuel burn low at cruise. For coastal and intercity work it should do exactly what you want.

The compromise surfaces on steep unpaved ramps, where a tall ratio means more downshifting and more heat in the driveline, and this is genuine mixed mining and highway territory. No alternative ratio is listed on this sheet and the axle loadings are 6.5 tonnes at the front with 13 tonnes at the middle and rear, so raise whether a shorter ratio can be built, rather than assuming 3.083 is your only choice.

Tyres, suspension and unusual wheel choice

The tyre specification is worth reading twice, because it is not what you expect: 12R22.5-18 on the steer axle paired with wide single 445/65R22.5-20 mixed drive on aluminium wheels, eleven wheels in total. Wide singles on the drive positions save weight and reduce rolling resistance, which helps your payload and your fuel bill, but they are a more specialised size than conventional 315/80 twins.

Ask the obvious question before you buy: can your tyre suppliers get that size, at what price, and how quickly? A saving in rolling resistance is irrelevant if a replacement takes four days to arrive. Suspension is listed as leaf spring and air, with three leaves recorded and rear figures not stated, so confirm the rear arrangement and whether ride height is adjustable for different trailer types.

"Wide singles save weight and fuel. Check your supplier can actually supply them before you put them on the specification."

Euro IV, AdBlue and DEF logistics in Peru

Euro IV here is achieved through SCR, so AdBlue, or DEF, becomes a second consumable alongside diesel. The internal way to think about it is this: with 680 litres in twin aluminium tanks, your refuelling rhythm will be set by the DEF supply rather than by the fuel. That is a supply-chain decision as much as a technical one.

Confirm DEF availability along every corridor you run, including the mining access routes, and buy from sealed containers. Contaminated or stale fluid is a common cause of dosing faults and derates, and a derate costs you more in a week than careful fluid handling costs in a year. Build the DEF line into your rate per kilometre from the outset.

The flat-roof cab, honestly assessed

The cab is flat roof, left-hand drive, seating two. Standard equipment covers electric air conditioning, power windows, central locking with remote lock, a five-in-one lock, an airbag seat and electric heated mirrors, plus MP3, radio and USB with no radar. It is a decent specification for regional work that returns to base.

For multi-day long-haul it is the wrong tool, and you should ask whether a high-roof version of this configuration exists. Standing room, storage and a proper bunk are what make night stops workable, and if driver retention matters on routes that keep people away for several days, the taller cab usually pays for itself. Ask before you accept the flat roof as given.

Price, fifth wheel and what to confirm

The listed price is $66,506. The internal note records model 4269SNFKB-ABZA0 with an FOB price of $54,600 and, importantly, states that the fifth wheel is included with a 50# saddle fitted. Because another EST-A listing treats the fifth wheel as optional, confirm in writing exactly what is included in your quotation rather than assuming consistency between models.

Establish whether your number is FOB or CIF, add freight, insurance, port charges, duty and homologation, and quote the vehicle code in every exchange. At this price the truck competes strongly on capital cost against European equivalents with comparable power — but weigh residual value and dealer support depth in Peru on your own evidence. The EST-A 6x4 tractor page is where that gets confirmed.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Does the retarder matter on long Andean descents?

Yes, especially at 55,000 kg GCW. This gearbox is the ZF 12TX2421TD with an integrated retarder, which holds speed on long gradients without riding the service brakes, so the front and rear discs stay cool and available for a real stop. It also cuts lining and disc wear on routes with repeated descents, and discs plus ABS complete the package.

Is 460 hp with 3.083 gearing right for 55 t?

The ISGe4-460 produces 2,300 Nm at 1,100 rpm, and the 3.083 ratio keeps revs low at cruise, which suits long paved corridors at 55,000 kg GCW. The compromise appears on steep unpaved ramps, where a tall ratio means more downshifting and more driveline heat. Mixed mining and highway work is worth discussing with the dealer before the specification is fixed.

Does Euro IV SCR mean AdBlue stops in Peru?

This engine meets Euro IV through SCR, so DEF is a second consumable alongside diesel, and with 680 litres in twin aluminium tanks your refuelling rhythm is set by DEF supply rather than fuel. Confirm DEF availability along your corridors and buy from sealed containers, because contaminated or stale fluid commonly causes dosing faults and derates. Build DEF into your cost per kilometre.
