If you run shuttle contracts in West or East Africa, the 27-seat segment is where the money is — and where it is easiest to buy the wrong bus. Too small and you turn away bookings; too big and you pay for a coach you cannot fill. The Foton AUV H7 intercity bus sits in that gap: a 7.3-metre diesel mid-bus with a Cummins engine, a ZF gearbox and a 26+1 layout. The question we ask before signing is whether this configuration survives our roads, our fuel and our duty cycle. This review walks the specification line by line, flags what the sheet omits, and closes with the questions to put to the dealer.
Start with the tape measure, because in this class body length decides everything else. The H7 is 7,300 mm long, 2,230 mm wide and 3,030 mm high with the roof air-conditioning unit. That width matters if your routes include old town centres, narrow market streets or guarded compound gates — measure your tightest access point against 2,230 mm plus mirrors first.
The 4,000 mm wheelbase gives a turning radius of 10 m or less — useful for hotel driveways, school forecourts and bus-rank manoeuvring. Approach and departure angles are 23° and 13°; the 13° departure angle is the one to think about on steep ferry ramps or ungraded yard entrances. Minimum ground clearance is 200 mm: better than a city bus, but treat deep rutted tracks with respect.
Inside, the 1,900 mm standing height is the figure passengers actually feel, letting adults move down the aisle without stooping. The floor is bamboo under anti-wear floor leather — a combination that wears better than vinyl in sandy, high-traffic service.
"In the 27-seat class, a 10 m turning circle and 1.9 m of interior height buy you more real-world utilisation than another 20 horsepower ever will."
The engine is the Cummins ISF3.8s5154 — 3.76 litres, rated 105 kW (141 PS) at 2,600 rpm, homologated to Euro V — driving through a ZF ZF6S500 six-speed manual with a 350 mm clutch. That pairing is the strongest argument for this bus: Cummins ISF parts and service knowledge exist across most African markets, and the ZF box is one your mechanics will recognise.
Now the honest arithmetic. Gross vehicle weight is listed at 6 t and maximum gross weight at 8.5 t, with front and rear axles rated 3 t and 5.5 t. Fill 26 seats, add the driver, luggage and fuel, and you are close to that 8.5 t ceiling, at which point 141 hp is adequate rather than generous. Rated maximum speed is 110 km/h and gradeability at least 35%, but on a long hot climb, at altitude, or fully loaded you will work the gearbox.
The sheet publishes neither a torque figure nor a final drive ratio, and those two numbers decide how the bus behaves between 60 and 90 km/h on your terrain — ask for both in writing. Fuel capacity is 120 litres, modest for intercity work, so plan refuelling stops rather than assuming a full day's range.
Passenger seats are luxury imitation leather, 26 of them, with a single-side interior luggage rack above and a cold wind pipeline along the cabin. Climate control is a Songz SZGZ-I/F-D unit rated at 15,480 kcal with an Aoke compressor; heating comes from a fuel-fired water heating system feeding three floor-mounted radiators, and a defroster is fitted. Interior noise is quoted at no more than 79 dB(A) at a constant 50 km/h, so the cabin stays conversational at town and secondary-road speeds. Expect more at 90 km/h; if your contracts are long-distance transfers, ride in a demonstrator.
The driver gets a mechanical damping seat, a dedicated driver door and a USB charging port in the driving area; entertainment is MP3 and radio, which suits shuttle work but is thin for tourism — budget for a PA system if clients expect one. The front passenger door is a pneumatic external swing door and a rear passenger door is optional; for school or institutional duty, where fast supervised evacuation matters, we would specify that rear door.
The H7 runs leaf spring suspension front and rear, front and rear drum brakes, integral power steering and 215/75R17.5 tyres with one spare. WABCO ABS is fitted — the component we most want to see, because ABS from a recognised braking supplier is easier to diagnose and to source parts for than an unbranded system. Braking distance is quoted at 10 m or less from 30 km/h at full load; treat that as a type-approval figure, since your own stopping distance on worn tyres will be longer.
Safety equipment includes a fire extinguisher, anti-theft alarm safety hammers, side curtains and laminated front glass, plus an automatic fire extinguishing device in the engine compartment and an engine compartment temperature alarm. Those last two are what we would highlight to any insurer: engine-bay fire suppression is the difference between a roadside incident and a total loss.
"WABCO ABS plus engine-bay fire suppression is not marketing copy — it is the specification your insurer and your night driver both care about."
The maintenance case rests on familiar components: Cummins engine, ZF gearbox, WABCO ABS, Songz air conditioning, Aoke compressor. These are brands with regional parts distribution, which shortens downtime. Cooling is by mechanical fan rather than a viscous or electronic unit — fewer things to fail, and cheaper when a bearing or belt goes. Leaf springs and drum brakes are a similar choice: less sophisticated than air suspension, but any roadside workshop can service them.
What the pack does not specify is the service interval, the warranty period or the parts package. Do not assume any of them: ask for the oil and filter interval in kilometres and hours, what the warranty covers and for how long, whether a starter spare-parts kit ships with the bus, and whether a trained technician is within reach of your depot.
The listed price is USD 45,600, with a DAP figure of USD 39,800 quoted separately. Read the incoterm carefully — DAP places the bus at your named destination with duties and taxes typically for your account, so your landed cost is not simply the DAP number. Get a written breakdown of freight, insurance, duty and registration before comparing.
Against a European or Japanese 27-seat coach of equivalent power, the capital saving is substantial, and that is the core argument for this bus: mainstream driveline components at a fraction of the acquisition cost. The counterweight is residual value, since a used European coach usually holds a stronger resale position. Compare total cost over your intended holding period instead. Also confirm whether your market can register right-hand drive — this specification is LHD.
On the specification alone, the H7 fits three profiles: intercity operators running 80–250 km sectors on paved or decent secondary roads; institutional buyers — schools, agencies, hotels, mine and industrial sites — moving staff on fixed routes, where the tight turning radius and durable floor matter more than speed; and tour operators doing day tours and light-baggage airport shuttles. It fits less well for multi-day touring with a full-size suitcase per passenger, or sustained mountain and high-altitude work. Both are solvable — extra luggage provision, or a driveline and axle-ratio conversation — but only before the order, so check the AUV H7 specification sheet against your route profile.
It handles hand luggage and soft bags for a 26+1 layout — not a full-size suitcase for every passenger on a multi-day tour. With the interior rack and 1,900 mm of headroom it is comfortable for day tours and intercity shuttle work; for airport transfers or tourism with checked baggage, plan from the outset for a roof rack or an additional rear compartment.
This H7 is homologated on the Euro V Cummins ISF3.8s5154 rated at 105 kW at 2,600 rpm, and Euro V calibration is sensitive to high-sulphur fuel. If your supply is inconsistent, ask which lower emission tier is homologated for your market — the level is fixed at order and cannot be changed once the bus is built.
At a maximum gross weight of 8.5 t with 26 passengers plus luggage, the 105 kW Cummins is adequate rather than generous, and you will notice it most at altitude or in high heat. The 35% gradeability and 110 km/h top speed are rated-condition figures; if your route is mountainous, discuss engine and axle options first.
The final drive ratio and torque curve, which together set hill performance and cruising rpm; the service interval and warranty terms; whether right-hand drive is available for your registration; and the exact DAP scope.
