On a small island like Grenada, a refrigerated truck does not need to be huge — it needs to be the right size for narrow roads, short but frequent runs, and a chilled load that must stay cold from the port cold-store to the supermarket or fish processor. The buying question is practical: an 8.5-tonne rigid that a single driver can place easily, with a powertrain that pulls a reefer box up a coastal hill without strain.
This article covers one scenario for Grenada: cold chain and refrigerated transport. There is one Foton listing configured for it, the Aumark S 8.5-tonne 4×2, and every figure below comes from its specification sheet. Two honesty notes up front: the listing describes the truck for cold-chain use but specifies no refrigeration unit or insulated body, and the headline power figure does not match the detailed powertrain sheet — we explain both below.

The Aumark S is certified at 8,500 kg gross vehicle weight on a 4×2 layout, and the sheet specifies it as right-hand drive for sale in Grenada — which is the correct steering side for the island's traffic. The wheelbase is 3,800 mm and the chassis dimension is 6,934 × 2,136 × 2,290 mm, with a 2,060 mm body width. Front axle rating is 2.85 t and rear is 6 t, with six tyres plus a spare on tubeless L215/75R17.5-14PR-MT rubber. That is a manoeuvrable, pavement-friendly size for town delivery and coastal shuttles, not a heavy-haul chassis.
The engine is a Foton Cummins ISF3.8s4R154, 3,760 cc, diesel, with a ZF 6S558 six-speed manual. The detailed powertrain sheet lists the output as 115 kW, which is 154 PS (metric horsepower), with 500 N·m of torque. The listing headline, however, states 125 hp. Those do not agree — 154 PS is about 152 brake horsepower, a clear gap from 125. Before you pay, ask the supplier to confirm the exact rated output on the VIN-level specification in writing; do not assume the headline number is correct.

The cab is a regular cab with three seats, and the standard configuration is a heating-and-cooling integrated electric air conditioner — a useful standard fit for a tropical reefer cab where the driver shares the cooling load. Brakes are front disc and rear drum on a pneumatic (air) brake system with four-channel, four-sensor ABS (4S4M), and the steering is right-hand drive. The fuel tank is 120 L, adequate for an island's daily distribution loop. Suspension is front and rear leaf spring, the right choice for a working 8.5-tonne box.

For an island truck the running gear is the difference between a vehicle that earns and one that sits. The Aumark S runs on six tyres plus a spare, on tubeless L215/75R17.5-14PR-MT rubber — a 17.5-inch size chosen for lower rolling resistance and a lower floor height, which suits a refrigerated box you load by hand. The 120 L fuel tank is ample for an island distribution loop that returns to base each day, and the front axle rating of 2.85 t against a 6 t rear, on leaf-spring suspension, keeps the chassis light and cheap to maintain. The 4.3 drive-axle ratio is a balanced number for a box that is rarely empty but never massively overloaded. None of it is heavy-specialist kit, which is exactly what you want when the nearest dealer is a ferry ride away. That same simplicity also keeps insurance and routine-service costs predictable, which matters for a small cold-chain operator running on thin margins.
The Aumark S is Euro IV, which is a far more registerable position than the Euro II or III badges seen on some heavier Foton listings, and a sensible match for a newer island fleet. The bigger gap is the one we opened with: the listing is sold for cold-chain use, but it specifies no refrigeration unit make or model, no insulation, and no temperature range. Those are bodywork items the chassis supplier may not provide, so you must obtain a separate, signed specification from a qualified reefer body builder before you treat this as a turnkey chiller.
Grenada applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Traffic Department. Grenada is a small, hilly island economy running right-hand drive. The practical catch is that the tight, hilly island roads and right-hand drive mean a nimble, correctly specced rigid fits better than a heavy unit. The core business is nutmeg, tourism and island distribution, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.
For a reefer the weight discipline matters doubly, because a refrigerated body and the diesel for the unit eat into the legal payload before the first carton goes on, and a breakdown mid-run is spoilage, not just downtime.
In Grenada the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Japanese reconditioned trucks dominate, and Foton has to pitch on price and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.
Resolve the power figure. The headline says 125 hp; the sheet says 115 kW (154 PS). Get the exact rated output on the VIN specification in writing.
Specify the refrigeration unit. The listing gives no reefer make, model, insulation or temperature range. Obtain a separate signed body specification from a qualified builder.
Confirm the Euro IV acceptance. Euro IV is generally registerable, but confirm it meets your import permit rather than assuming.
Check axle load against your payload. Front 2.85 t, rear 6 t, GVW 8,500 kg. Confirm your chilled body plus load stays inside these ratings.
The Aumark S is listed as a complete vehicle, which keeps the chassis import simple; the refrigerated body is then fitted by a specialist. The price above is the published listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — the reefer body, freight and duties sit on top. Buy the right-hand-drive chassis that fits your island routes, then confirm the cold box in writing.
