Container work at an Algerian port is a specific kind of driving. The distances from the quay to the inland depots are short to medium, the loads are heavy and uniform, and the truck spends a lot of time in low gears pulling a loaded box out of the terminal and a lot of time cruising empty on the return. The tractor configured for Algeria in this category is the Foton Auman GTL — listed as the Auman R — a 6×4 head rated at 400 hp with a 55-tonne GCW. It is a straightforward, high-tank, Euro III workhorse, and the sheet is honest about what it is.

This article covers one scenario — port and container transport in Algeria — and one vehicle. Every figure is from the listing. The one line that a buyer must resolve before ordering is the emission standard, and it is flagged plainly below rather than talked around.

1. The engine and the torque you actually use

The GTL runs a Foton Cummins ISG12, an 11,800 cc six-cylinder diesel rated at 400 hp (the listing also carries the engine optional line "400/0", confirming 400 as the configured figure). Peak torque is 2,000 N·m at 1,000 rpm. That low-end torque is the number that matters for container work: pulling a loaded 40-foot box off the terminal apron and up the first grade is a low-speed, high-effort job, and an engine that makes its full 2,000 N·m from 1,000 rpm gives the driver usable pull almost from idle. The high-horsepower headline is less important than that 1,000 rpm torque shelf.

Behind the engine sits a FAST 12JSDX240T, an aluminium-housing 12-speed manual (the listing writes it as F-12MT). Twelve ratios let the driver keep the ISG12 in its torque band both during the slow terminal exit and on the open return run. There is no automated transmission listed, so this is a manual head; if your operation wants an AMT for driver-comfort or two-pedal city work, that is not on this sheet and should be asked about separately.

2. The 3.083 final drive and the 700 L tank

The axle ratio is 3.083 — a tall, cruising-oriented number. On the empty return leg from the inland depot back to the port, that ratio keeps engine rpm down and fuel use sensible at speed. What it is not is a steep ratio for steep, slow, fully loaded climbing. For flat or gently rolling port-to-depot routes this is the right choice; for a terminal that sits at the top of a long grade, ask whether a lower (numerically higher) axle ratio is offered, because 3.083 will labour a loaded box uphill.

Fuel capacity is 700 litres in a single aluminium tank. That is a large tank for a tractor and it matters at a port where diesel supply inside the terminal can be slow or restricted; one fill covers a long day of short, repeated box runs without a mid-shift top-up. The chassis overall dimensions are 6,950 × 2,490 mm with cab height of 3,570 or 3,890 mm depending on the roof option, and the high-roof cab is listed, which gives the driver standing room on a multi-drop day.

3. Axles, tyres and the 55-tonne rating

The 6×4 layout carries a 6.5 t front axle and a 13 t rear axle group, with a declared GCW of 55,000 kg and a GVW of 25,000 kg. Tyres are 315/80R22.5 at 18PR, eleven pieces, which is the standard heavy-tractor fitment for that weight class. The frame section is 225 / 286 × 80 × 8 mm, suspension is leaf spring, and the steering gear is a ZF8098. Brakes are air, front and rear drum, with ABS as the control system. The announcement model is BJ4259SMFKB-BQ, and the unit is listed as a complete vehicle.

4. The emission line you must resolve

The listing declares Euro III, and the emission route field is blank. Euro III is an old standard, and for a tractor that will be registered and operated in Algeria you need to confirm it matches what your import permit and your port operator require. The sheet records no SCR aftertreatment route, which is consistent with a Euro III calibration but means there is no urea system to maintain — a simpler truck, but also one that may not clear a stricter registration. If your permit demands Euro IV or higher, this specific unit will not satisfy it, and you should ask the supplier for a higher-emission variant rather than assume one exists. Check this against your local registration rules before you commit a deposit.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Algeria

Algeria applies axle-load limits on a Middle Eastern / Mediterranean pattern — a single-axle limit around 13 t, a tandem near 24 t and gross combination weight near 44 t — enforced by the Ministry of Transport. Algiers is the gateway, and the freight runs oil and gas plus the Sahara distances. The practical catch is that the Sahara distances and the heat punish an under-spec cooling system, so spec matters as much as the load number. The core business is oil, gas and long-haul freight, and a truck that is cheap to buy but expensive to run spends more of its life parked than earning.

For a container tractor the real exposure is the Algiers access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.

What Algerian fleets already run

In Algeria the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate the second-hand market — with European brands in the premium segment, Sinotruk Howo and Shacman as the main Chinese competition, and a large gray-market used fleet in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Foton’s pitch is the middle ground.

5. Pre-order checklist for the Algeria GTL tractor

Confirm the Euro III emission against your permit. It is declared, with no SCR route listed. If your import or port registration requires Euro IV or higher, this unit will not qualify — ask for a higher-emission variant before paying.

Check the 3.083 ratio against your route. It is a cruising ratio. If your depot sits at the top of a long grade, ask whether a lower axle ratio is available for the loaded climb.

Decide on transmission type. The listing shows a 12-speed manual. If you want an AMT, it is not on this sheet — establish availability and price separately.

Verify the 55 t GCW against local axle-load limits. The 6.5 t front and 13 t rear ratings, plus the 25,000 kg GVW, should be checked against the loads your containers actually impose.

The price shown is the published FOB listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and local registration sit on top. Settle the emission question first; it is the one that can stop the truck being registered after it has been paid for.
