Foton Auman EST 8x4 Dump Truck for Uganda Mining: 380 PS, a 19 m3 Body

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Ugandan quarries and road-stone operations need a different dump truck from the Tanzanian pit runner. Here the cycle is often longer and the loads are bulky — crushed stone, laterite, pit-run aggregate — so volume and axle capacity matter as much as raw climbing grunt. The truck profiled in this article is an 8×4, which spreads weight across more axles and carries a far bigger body than a 6×4. This is the Foton Auman EST 8×4 dump truck, listing id 101, configured for mining and quarry haulage and built as a right-hand-drive complete vehicle.

Every figure below is from the published listing. As with the Tanzanian unit, one field on the sheet names a different sales country, and the "ton class" label does not match the declared weights — both are flagged so you can resolve them before ordering.

Auman EST 8×4 dump: 380 PS, 70-tonne class label, 5.26 final drive, right-hand drive.

1. Why 8×4, and what the 5.26 ratio buys

An 8×4 puts drive through the rear two axles, giving a 16-tonne middle/rear axle group against a 9-tonne front, on a 1,800 + 3,950 + 1,350 mm wheelbase. That weight distribution is what lets the truck legally carry a heavy, bulky load on Ugandan roads without overloading a single axle. The final drive is 5.26 — the same low, torque-multiplying ratio as the 6×4 mining units, suited to launching a loaded body up a quarry ramp. The engine is the Foton Cummins ISGe3-380, an 11.8-litre unit rated 380 PS (279 kW) at 1,900 r/min with 2,000 Nm of torque at 1,000 rpm, through a Sinotruk HW23712 Iron (Q) 12-speed manual. Like the smaller dump, there is no automated box or listed retarder, so driver skill protects the brakes on the grade.

Auman EST 8x4 dump body 7400x2300x1100 mm
Dump body 7,400/7,600 × 2,300 × 1,100 mm — roughly 18.7–19.2 m³ of volume.

2. The body and the weight the sheet actually declares

The cargo box is listed at 7,400 / 7,600 × 2,300 × 1,100 mm — about 18.7 to 19.2 cubic metres, a clear step up from the 6×4's 14.7–15.2 m³. That is a volume body for light, bulky material: with a 1,100 mm side height you will reach the truck's weight limit well before you fill it with dense rock. The sheet labels the truck "70T" in its ton class, but the declared gross vehicle weight is 31,000 kg and the gross combination weight is 60,000 kg. Those two numbers are what matter for the weighbridge and for axle-load law, so plan loads to the 31-tonne GVW and treat "70T" as a marketing class, not a payload figure. No payload in kilograms is printed — calculate it from kerb weight and confirm with the supplier.

13 tyres on 12.00R20 20PR rubber, 9 t front / 16 t rear axles, 350 L aluminium tank.

3. Chassis, cab and the daily-driver items

The frame section is 225 / 320 × 90 × (8+7) mm on leaf-spring suspension, built for off-road loading. Tyres are 12.00R20 20PR mixed pattern across 13 wheels (counting the spare). Fuel is a single 350-litre aluminium tank. The cab is a flat-roof, two-seat layout, 2,490 mm wide, with power windows, central locking, a unified five-lock system, a standard airbag seat and manually heated mirrors. Air conditioning is listed as automatic. Brakes are full air, drum front and rear, with ABS. For a truck that lives on a quarry floor, the ABS and the robust frame are the lines that earn their keep; the auto A/C is a welcome cab feature for a hot Ugandan site.

4. Why 8×4 over the 6×4 for Uganda

The Tanzanian quarry unit profiled alongside this scenario is a 6×4; this Ugandan truck is an 8×4, and the difference is the load and the road. An 8×4 spreads the same heavy, bulky burden across a third driven axle, raising the legal payload and smoothing the ride on long, rough haul roads that are common away from the Kampala–Entebbe corridor. If your site is a short pit ramp, a 6×4 may be enough; if you are moving crushed stone or laterite over distance on variable surfaces, the 8×4's axle spread and 19 m³ body are the more productive choice. Both share the 5.26 final drive and the ISG-series Cummins, so the decision is about axle count and body volume, not about the engine family.

5. Operational notes for the quarry floor

On site, the 12.00R20 20PR tyres and the 225 / 320 × 90 × (8+7) mm frame are built for repeated loading over broken ground, and the 350-litre aluminium tank covers a full shift without a bowser visit. The flat-roof two-seat cab with automatic A/C is adequate for the driver, though there is no sleeper or premium trim — appropriate for a site truck. The absence of a listed retarder or engine brake means the service brakes do the work on the grade, so driver training and a disciplined descent plan protect both the truck and the load. None of this is unusual for the class; it is simply the honest operating reality the spec sheet implies.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Uganda

Uganda sits on the East African Community axle-load framework, harmonised at a gross combination weight of 56 t with a single-axle limit of 10 t, a tandem limit of 18 t and a tridem limit of 24 t, enforced by the Uganda National Roads Authority on the main trunk roads. Landlocked Uganda hauls cargo 1,000 km up from Mombasa on the Northern Corridor. The practical catch is that the climb inland and the Kampala traffic both eat into the legal GCW, so power-to-weight matters. The core business is transit freight from Mombasa and coffee export, and the run from the coast to the interior is long, so axle discipline has to be right at the gate, not just at the first weighbridge.

For a tipper the binding constraint is the haul from the pit to the trunk road, where the the road authority weighbridge is the point where an over-loaded unit collects its fine — and transit freight from Mombasa and coffee export runs through here, so the box that fills to the headline weight on site can be over the axle caps before it reaches the highway.

What Ugandan fleets already run

In Uganda the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate the second-hand market — with Sinotruk Howo and Shacman as the main Chinese competition and Tata or Ashok Leyland on lighter rigid work. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density and driver familiarity but loses on age, odometer honesty and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health but has to build a parts channel that is still thinner than the Japanese network. Foton’s pitch is the middle ground, which is exactly what a TCO-minded fleet buyer wants to hear.

6. Pre-order checklist for Uganda

Reconcile the weight labels. The "70T" class sits against a 31,000 kg GVW and 60,000 kg GCW. Plan to the declared weights and ask the supplier what "70T" refers to.

Confirm the destination. The sheet lists "sales country: Zambia". Get a version of the approval naming Uganda, or written confirmation the same complete vehicle clears Ugandan import.

Lock the Euro III badge. If Uganda or your project financing requires a higher tier, this unit as listed will not qualify.

Get the payload in writing. No payload is printed. Ask for kerb weight and the resulting legal payload before sizing loads.

The Auman EST 8×4 is the volume hauler of the pair: a right-hand-drive, 380 PS, 18.7–19.2 m³ dump on a 5.26 final drive, priced at $49,433 as a complete vehicle. For Ugandan quarry and aggregate work it is the right shape of truck — provided the Zambia sales-country note and the weight-label gap are resolved on paper before you deposit.
