Most tractors are sold as a capability increase. This one is sold as a deliberate reduction, and it is a much more interesting proposition for it. The development record shows the vehicle was derived from a GTL-E 4x2 rated at 70 tonnes and down-rated to 45, with the axles, suspension and frame re-specified to suit. Everything heavy you remove is dead weight you no longer pay to haul every kilometre. The Foton Auman GTL 4x2 tractor therefore rewards operators who know their actual weights, and punishes those who buy on headline numbers.
Read the base-model notes and the design intent is unusually clear. This tractor is based on the overseas GCC GTL-E 4x2 model 4189SLFKA-A3ZA16, and in the redesign the gross combination weight was changed from 70 tonnes to 45. The front and rear axles, suspension and frame were then adjusted to match, the transmission lost its power take-off, and the exhaust was re-routed from upper to lower.
The logic is sound and worth endorsing. If you move daily industrial products on mainly highways, a 70-tonne chassis is structural weight you are buying, fuelling and maintaining for nothing. Right-sizing removes it, lowers fuel cost per trip and reduces tyre and brake wear. The counterpoint is equally simple: if you genuinely need 70 tonnes, this is not the truck, and you should ask about the original specification instead.
Note in particular that the PTO is cancelled. If you plan to drive hydraulics from the gearbox — a refrigeration compressor, a walking-floor pump or a tipping unit — this configuration will not do it, and no PTO appears in the options either. That is a hard limitation rather than a preference, so settle it before anything else.
"This is a right-sized 45-tonne chassis, not a de-rated 70-tonne one. Know which of those you actually want before you order."
The numbers are consistent, which is reassuring. Maximum design total mass is 45,000 kg, curb weight is 7,690 kg, GVW is 18,000 kg, the design fifth-wheel payload capacity is 10,180 kg and the total mass of the quasi-trailer is 37,180 kg. Add the tractor's contribution and its fifth-wheel load to the trailer's rating and the arithmetic holds together.
Running gear is a 6.5-tonne front axle and a 13-tonne rear axle with a stamped welded housing and a 3.083 ratio featuring self-adjusting arm ABS. Track is 2,085 mm at the front and 1,865 mm at the rear, and there are two seats. If your trailers concentrate weight forward, check kingpin load against that 6.5-tonne front rating before committing.
The 3.083 rear axle is a tall, economy-biased ratio and it is the right choice for this duty. Peak torque of 2,300 Nm arriving at 1,100 rpm means there is enough in hand to stay high in the twelve gears on motorway gradients, and the design brief is explicitly mainly highways with national and provincial roads secondary.
The published maximum speeds are 120 km/h with the 3.083 axle, 112 km/h with 3.364 and 102 km/h with 3.7, with the overspeed alarm set at 120 km/h and no speed limiter fitted. Now read the remarks underneath, which state plainly that with a 45-tonne train mass and good road conditions those figures apply in top gear, that maximum gradeability of at least 15 per cent is a first-gear theoretical value, and that all dynamic performance data are theoretical calculations for reference only.
"The manufacturer says its own performance figures are theoretical. Take that seriously and ask what your combination actually achieves at your weights."
The ISGe5-460 is an 11,800 ml diesel with high-pressure common-rail injection meeting Euro V, rated 331 kW / 460 ps at 1,900 rpm with maximum torque of 2,300 Nm at 1,100 rpm. A silicone oil clutch fan is fitted, the engine emission entry simply reads Euro V, and no after-treatment route is stated here — so confirm whether AdBlue and DEF logistics apply to your unit.
Drive goes through a Φ430 push-type clutch with automatic electronic control into the ZF 12TX2420TD aluminium gearbox with automatic shift control. The combination is well-proven and widely supported, which is a real advantage when you are running through several Gulf states.
Brakes are dual-circuit air with drums front and rear, a spring-energy storage parking brake, and an engine brake as the only auxiliary. There are two things to weigh here. Drums keep costs and repair complexity low, which is sensible for this duty. But there is no hydraulic retarder, so on long sustained descents you are relying on the engine brake alone — worth confirming against your route profile.
Suspension is leaf spring on both axles: longitudinal leaves with stabiliser bar and dampers at the front, and main plus auxiliary leaf springs at the rear, three leaves at the front and five plus four behind. The cab uses full-floating spring suspension with electric tilt. Note that this is steel spring rather than full air at the cab, so expect a firmer ride than some competitors offer.
The cab is flat roof with the GTL-E highway interior — listed as H4 standard trim, body level code 9 — and standard equipment covers automatic air conditioning, electric doors and windows, a mid-spec air suspension seat, manual rearview mirrors, MP5 with radio and USB, no radar, and a 180 Ah battery. A 800-litre aluminium tank and a split metal medium bumper complete the package, with a split mudguard and no side skirt.
The options worth attention are the satellite positioning device, listed as 0/J, which most fleets running cross-border work should specify, and the fifth wheel, listed as 0/5/M/R. Note also that the additional-installation lines for air deflector, independent heat source, ETC and auxiliary power are all set to zero — so nothing behind the cab is included unless you ask.
The ISGe5-460 is a Euro V high-pressure common-rail unit, which matches what most Gulf states require for new commercial registrations, though the exact rule differs by country and model year. Confirm what your registration authority currently demands and get the engine and documentation matched to it. There is also no complete vehicle announcement for overseas models, so check what that means for your own paperwork.
The listed price is $46,631. Separately, the internal note records a domestic-trade plus domestic-transport figure of ¥298,700, rising to ¥310,000 for orders below thirty units, which tells you volume matters here. Establish which basis applies to an export order, then add shipping, insurance, duty and homologation for a landed cost. The GTL 4x2 tractor page is where that gets settled.
It is derived from the GCC GTL-E 4x2 70T unit, but the GCW was deliberately reduced to 45 tonnes with the front and rear axles, suspension and frame re-specified to match, using a 6.5-tonne front and a 13-tonne rear axle. For daily industrial goods running mainly on highways that removes structural weight you would otherwise pay to haul. If you genuinely need 70 tonnes, ask about the original specification.
The 3.083 with the 12-speed ZF 12TX2420TD aluminium gearbox and 2,300 Nm from 1,100 rpm is a tall, economy-oriented cruising specification, with the overspeed alarm set at 120 km/h and a design brief of mainly highways. On soft ground, in yards or on steep loading ramps that ratio is the wrong choice, and a numerically higher axle should be ordered instead.
