Buying a 56-tonne tractor for cross-border work is not a horsepower decision. It is about whether the machine was engineered for your duty, and most spec sheets are written to sell rather than disclose. That is why the paperwork behind this one is interesting: the internal project name reads "Overseas South Africa A5T 6x4-56T X13-560 Euro III - AMT Right-Hand Drive Double-Trailer Tractor", which declares the duty, the market, the driving side and the combination weight before you read another line. The Foton Auman EST-A 6x4 560 hp 56T tractor is built around that brief.
The declared purpose is transportation of daily industrial products, with the duty described as medium and long-distance and cross-border work carrying mineral products, daily consumer goods, glass, and other loads such as paper, plastic, steel and building materials. The sheet also states suitability for standard transportation with a maximum train mass of 56 tons using double trailers. If your fleet does not run that pattern, this is the wrong tool.
The service envelope matters as much: mainly highways with some provincial, general and compacted roads, an applicable temperature range of −25 °C to 40 °C, and operation below 3,000 metres above sea level. This example is right-hand drive with a 2018-model RHD interior and SmartBCU electrical architecture — correct for southern Africa, and a deciding fact anywhere that drives on the right.
"Read the declared purpose line first. This chassis was engineered around a double-trailer combination, not adapted to one after the order arrived."
The engine is the X13E3-560, a 12,900 ml diesel with high-pressure common rail injection meeting Euro III. The rating block reads 413 kW / 553 ps at 1,800 rpm with maximum torque of 2,500 Nm at 1,100 rpm, driving through a Φ430 push-type clutch with automatic electronic control. Torque arriving that low is what you want when a loaded combination is pulling you back and you need the engine to hold its ground.
Settle one point before signing: the model designation and the page title say 560 hp while the parameter table certifies 553 ps. Treat 553 ps as the figure that belongs on documents and get the certified power and torque for the unit being shipped in writing, so nothing later conflicts with your registration paperwork.
Behind it sits the ZF 12TX2621TD aluminium transmission with retarder, listed as automatic operation. An AMT on this duty is a driver-retention tool: consistent shifts whatever the driver's skill, less clutch abuse, fewer arguments on steep grades. Note that no power take-off is fitted, so any gearbox-driven hydraulics need raising now rather than after the build freezes.
The numbers are internally consistent, which is always the first thing to check. Maximum design total mass is 56,000 kg, maximum towing mass of the trailer is 49,986 kg, designed fifth-wheel load is 15,986 kg and the curb weight of the vehicle is 9,884 kg. The running gear backs it up: a 7-tonne rated front axle and a 13-tonne single-reduction rear axle with an imported hub unit and 3.364 self-adjusting arm ABS on a stretched axle housing.
That rear axle ratio explains the speed figures, and here is the second trap. The sheet lists 105 km/h at 3.364, 96 km/h at 3.7 and 115 km/h at 3.083, so the standard ratio sits between the shorter and taller alternatives. Confirm which one your unit carries, because it moves both cruising rpm and startability on a heavy pull-away. Maximum climbing gradient is given as 24 per cent calculated by adhesion — a grip limit, not a measured result.
Anyone who has come down a long loaded pass knows that stopping is the specification. Service brakes are dual-circuit pneumatic, the parking brake is spring-energy storage air-cutoff, and there are discs at the front with drums at the rear — a sensible split that puts the harder-working discs on the steer axle while keeping rear-end work simple. The auxiliary brake is an engine brake plus a hydraulic retarder.
EBS and ESC from WABCO, AEBS from Zhibo, LDWS, TPMS and FCW, cruise control and a reverse image are all standard. The build record notes no ETC, no adaptive cruise, no refrigerator and no reverse radar, with a TBOX interface reserved rather than populated — anything you need from that list is an order item, not something to add later.
"Ask about the retarder before you ask about horsepower. On a loaded descent, only one of them keeps you out of the run-out."
The cab is high-roof with H5 interior trim, body grade 5, body status ESTA-2490, mounted on full-floating air bag suspension with electric cab lifting. The front axle carries three leaves with a stabiliser bar and shock absorbers, and the rear sits on air suspension without lifting. There are two seats. For drivers sleeping in the cab for days at a time, that combination plus automatic air conditioning is directly relevant to keeping them on your payroll.
Standard equipment covers electric windows, central locking with remote locking, unified five locks, an air bag seat with height adjustment and heated rearview mirrors, with MP5, radio and USB but no radar. Front and side windows are anti-ultraviolet glass. Not fitted: parking air conditioning, independent heat source and refrigerator — worth discussing if drivers wait overnight at borders.
The frame is 900 mm wide at the front and 850 mm at the rear, with a longitudinal beam section of 225/286 × 80 × (8+L). Tyres are 315/80R22.5 20PR on steer and drive, with VB3 and VGV listed as alternatives. Choose on what your route's tyre suppliers actually stock, because a size nobody carries costs you a day's revenue regardless of how good the specification looks.
The fuel tank is 760 L plus 300 L of aluminium alloy, which buys flexibility about which side of a border you buy on and reduces exposure to one supplier's pricing. The engine also carries a three-stage filter, metal oil pan and high-position cyclone intake — the items you specify when dust, rather than distance, is what kills engines. Ask what a filter set costs locally before you commit.
The optional-device block is detailed: engine 561, transmission 459, fuel tank L77, middle and rear axles RP/RM/RR, satellite positioning 0/J, fifth wheel 0/R and air deflector 0/D. Satellite positioning matters most for fleets answering questions about where a consignment is, so confirm which variant you are ordering.
The fifth-wheel line also needs settling explicitly, given that this tractor exists to carry almost 16 tonnes of fifth-wheel load. Confirm the make, model and rating of the unit fitted and how it matches your trailer's kingpin standard, then check whether an air deflector is included — behind a box-fronted trailer at highway speed, its absence is paid for every kilometre.
The listed price is $58,800, with an internal note referring to model 4259SMFKB-RFTA02 at an FOB price of $52,800. Treat those as two different reference points and establish which configuration each covers before building a business case. A European-built 6x4 of comparable power costs materially more, which is why you are looking here at all — but the saving only counts if the specification matches your budget.
The hard gate is Euro III. It suits many African markets, lowers the purchase price and keeps maintenance simple, because there is no SCR system to feed and no DEF infrastructure to build — but it also means this tractor cannot be registered anywhere requiring Euro IV or above. Settle that first. Then confirm shipping, duty and homologation paperwork, and check real parts and service coverage in your country. The EST-A 56T tractor page is where those get settled.
The tractor is engineered around a 56,000 kg train mass, with a 15,986 kg fifth-wheel load and 49,986 kg maximum towing mass, using a 13-tonne single-reduction rear axle with air suspension. Whether double trailers are legal on your route is a permit question rather than a truck question, because South Africa and its neighbours apply their own combination rules. Share the route and trailer specifications and get the permitted configuration confirmed before ordering.
Yes, and for this duty it matters more than the headline power. Braking is an engine brake plus a hydraulic retarder on the ZF gearbox, with discs at the front and drums at the rear, so you can hold a loaded combination down a long grade without overheating the service brakes. EBS, ESC, AEBS, LDWS and TPMS come as standard, while adaptive cruise, ETC and reverse radar do not.
The stated envelope is −25 °C to 40 °C, on highways and compacted roads below 3,000 metres above sea level, with a three-stage filter and high-position cyclone intake for dust. The cooling package is sized for that envelope, so above 3,000 m you lose margin to turbo derating and sustained operation above 40 °C falls outside the declaration. If your route climbs higher or runs hotter, send the profile and have it checked before you order.
