Auman GTL-E 8x4 Dumper with YuChai 400: Who It Suits in Africa

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

The engine badge is the first thing most buyers notice, and on this truck it is not the Cummins you see elsewhere in the range. This Foton Auman GTL-E 8×4 dumper runs a YuChai YC6MK400-33 — 10,338 ml, 400 PS and 1,800 N·m between 1,100 and 1,500 rpm — through a FAST 12-speed to 5.26 axles, on an 80,000 kg GVW chassis with a short sleeper cab. It is specified for Africa and Central Asia. Whether that driveline is a compromise or an advantage depends on your workshop, your gradients and how far your nearest dealer is. We went through the sheet to answer the three questions that matter: 8×4 or 6×4, whether 400 PS handles loaded quarry hauls, and how a truck this size ships. Read the Auman GTL-E 8x4 dumper specification alongside this.

8x4 or 6x4 for quarry work?

The 8×4 layout spreads 80,000 kg GVW over a 9 t front axle and twin 16 t rear axles on 13 tyres, which lowers ground pressure on soft quarry floors and helps where axle-load limits are enforced. That is the case for buying it: soft ground, payloads near the top of the range, and local rules that cap single-axle loading. On those conditions the second steering axle earns its cost every day.

A 6×4 is cheaper, lighter and turns tighter, so it wins on short, hard-surfaced cycles. That is the honest counter-case, and it is why this decision should be made from your site rather than from a price list. Note that the vehicle is 10,600–10,800 mm long on a 2,100+4,000+1,400 mm wheelbase, so the turning circle is part of the cost. Walk your bench widths and tip head room before committing to an 8×4.

"Buy the 8x4 for soft ground and enforced axle limits. On short, hard-surfaced cycles the 6x4 is cheaper and easier to place."

Can 400 hp handle steep, loaded quarry hauls?

Auman GTL-E dumper 7600/7800 mm mid-length body
7,600/7,800×2,300×1,500 mm mid-length dump body.

The YuChai YC6MK400-33 gives 294 kW (400 PS) and 1,800 N·m between 1,100 and 1,500 rpm, and that band is exactly where you work when pulling away loaded on a ramp. Peak torque at 1,100–1,500 rpm rather than at a single speed means the engine has a plateau to work on, not a peak to chase. Compare that with the Cummins units in the same range, which produce more torque lower down, and you can see the character difference: this one wants to be kept in the middle of the rev range.

With the FAST 12JSDX240 iron 12-speed and a 5.26 rear ratio, low-speed control is the strong point rather than top speed. Twelve ratios let you keep the engine inside that 1,100–1,500 rpm window on a climb. If most of your distance is paved highway with mild gradients, ask about a taller ratio, which cuts fuel burn without hurting cycle times. FAST is one of the most widely distributed heavy gearbox brands in the markets this truck targets, which is a real advantage when you need parts far from a dealer.

The engine choice deserves the same practical judgement. YuChai is a major Chinese engine manufacturer with wide parts coverage in Africa and Central Asia, and this unit is homologated to Euro III — no SCR or DPF, so it tolerates variable fuel quality and can be maintained by a competent local workshop. If your operation already runs Cummins and stocks Cummins parts, that familiarity has value; if your nearest support is a general workshop, YuChai coverage may serve you better.

Tyres, brakes and running 80 tonnes

Auman GTL-E 8x4 dumper rear axles and 12.00R20 tyres
12.00R20 18PR tube-type radials, thirteen wheels, twin 16 t rear axles.

Tyres are 12.00R20 18PR tube-type radials, thirteen in total. Note the type: tube-type rather than the tubeless 13R22.5 fitted to some siblings in this range. For remote operations that is an advantage, because a tube-type tyre can often be repaired at the roadside by a local fitter with basic equipment, where a tubeless repair may need a proper workshop. Check that 12.00R20 is stocked in your region before delivery — it is a common size in African and Central Asian markets, but confirm rather than assume.

Braking is air brakes with front and rear drums under ABS. Drums are right for dust and grit, cheap to reline and repairable locally, but they fade on long descents — and at 80 tonnes that matters. Select the gear before the gradient and let the engine hold the truck. The sheet lists no engine brake or retarder, so ask whether one can be specified; on a truck this heavy it is a safety item. The 450 L tank is larger than the 350 L units elsewhere in the range, which suits long-distance work between refuelling stops, and the frame is 320×90×(8+7) mm with leaf springs at 11/11/14.

"Tube-type 12.00R20 is a feature, not an obsolescence — in remote country it is the tyre a local fitter can actually fix."

Cab, and what the driver gets

Short sleeper cab, two occupants, left-hand drive.

The cab is a short sleeper in left-hand drive, seating two. On cross-border or long-distance work that sleeper is worth a great deal: a driver can rest properly at a queue or a border post rather than dozing upright. Two seats still means a driver and a banksman rather than a crew, so plan accordingly. The sheet for this unit lists no air conditioning or infotainment detail, so confirm both with the dealer — in the markets this truck is built for, air conditioning is a retention item, not a luxury.

Also confirm seating and mirror specification, since the sheet records only the occupant count. These are the items a spec sheet omits and a driver notices on day one, and they are cheap to specify at order stage and awkward to add later.

Price and shipping to Africa

Tip on level ground and keep within the 80,000 kg GVW.

At 10,600–10,800×2,495×3,580 mm this truck is far too large for a standard container, so it normally moves by Ro-Ro or on a flat rack, with cab and body protected for the voyage. Freight, insurance and port charges are quoted separately, so give the dealer your discharge port and get the landed cost and sailing options confirmed. Depending on the port, the unit may ship complete or partially dismantled — confirm which applies before you book, because dismantling and reassembly is a real cost and a real risk.

The listing shows $45,369, with quoted figures of RMB 247,760 FOB Africa and RMB 257,960 DAP Central Asia, both net of tax. Those two bases are not comparable: FOB leaves ocean freight, insurance and destination charges to you, while DAP delivers to a named place with those included. Ask which basis applies to your order and what is excluded. Finally, confirm that 80,000 kg and these axle loads fall inside your local licensing class, and that Euro III documentation is accepted for registration.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Why choose 8x4 over 6x4 for quarry work?

The 8×4 spreads 80 t GVW over a 9 t front axle and twin 16 t rear axles on 13 tyres, lowering ground pressure on soft quarry floors and helping where axle-load limits are enforced. A 6×4 is cheaper, lighter and turns tighter, so it wins on short, hard-surfaced cycles. Choose 8×4 when your site roads are soft, your payload sits near the top of the range, or local rules cap single-axle loading.

Can 400 hp handle steep, loaded quarry hauls?

The YuChai 10.3-litre YC6MK400 gives 294 kW and 1,800 N·m between 1,100 and 1,500 rpm — exactly the band you use pulling away loaded on a ramp. With the 12-speed FAST gearbox and 5.26 rear ratio, low-speed control is the strong point rather than top speed. If most of your distance is paved highway with mild gradients, ask about a taller ratio, which cuts fuel burn without hurting cycle times.

How is an 8x4 dump truck shipped to Africa?

At 10,600–10,800×2,495×3,580 mm it is far too large for a standard container, so it normally moves by Ro-Ro or on a flat rack, with cab and body protected for the voyage. Freight, insurance and port charges are quoted separately, so give your discharge port and confirm landed cost and sailing options. Depending on the port, the unit may ship complete or partially dismantled.

What should I confirm that the sheet does not state?

Whether an engine brake or retarder can be specified; whether air conditioning and infotainment are fitted; which body length, 7,600 or 7,800 mm, is on your unit; and the warranty terms and service intervals for the YC6MK400 and the FAST gearbox.

Our read: this is a sensible buy for soft-ground, high-payload work in markets where YuChai and FAST parts are easier to find than Cummins diagnostics, and where a tube-type tyre is an advantage rather than a compromise. The torque plateau and the 12-speed are what will make it work on a ramp. Confirm your shipping method, your registration rules and the price basis before you commit.

With those settled, get a landed figure for your discharge port. The Auman GTL-E dumper page carries the full sheet and the current quotations.
