Foton Light & Medium Trucks for Haiti: 8.5-Tonne and 22-Tonne Rigs for Urban & Regional Distribution

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

In Haiti the distribution truck lives in the city and the bad road between towns. It starts cold, idles in traffic, climbs a grade with a full load, and does it again tomorrow. The buyer's question is simple: which rigid moves the right weight through those conditions without costing more than the job returns. This article answers that for one scenario — urban and regional distribution in Haiti — using three Foton trucks of different sizes.

We cover a 8.5-tonne light pair and a 22-tonne medium rigid. All three are 4×2, all are Euro III, and all share a pattern of short-wheelbase manoeuvrability. As with the rest of this batch, the listings' stated markets are not Haiti, so we flag that up front and move to the numbers that matter.

Foton Aumark S 8.5 tonne light cargo truck for Haiti distribution
The Foton Aumark S 8.5T: 141 hp Foton Cummins F3.8, 8,500 kg GVW, 4.33 rear-axle ratio, 7.50R16 tyres.

1. The light pair: Aumark S at 8.5 tonnes

Both light units run a Foton Cummins F3.8s3141 of 3.76 litres, producing 105 kW / 141 hp with 450 N·m of torque, through a ZF 6S558 six-speed manual. The rear axle is an NPR 6.0-tonne unit at a 4.33 ratio. GVW is 8,500 kg, the cab is a single-row 2,060 mm width with three seats, and the chassis is 6,920 × 2,135 × 2,320 mm with a flatbed overall of 6,955 × 2,270 × 2,370 mm.

The two differ in wheelbase and fuel. Unit 225 has a 3,800 mm wheelbase and a 160-litre aluminium tank, with a flatbed of 5,140 × 2,100 × 550 mm and a stated payload of 5,085 kg. Unit 226 has a shorter 3,360 mm wheelbase and a 120-litre tank. The shorter wheelbase turns tighter for dense urban lanes; the longer one carries more fuel and a longer body. Tyres are 7.50R16 tubeless as standard (with tube-type optional). Both are Euro III, with exhaust brake, drum air brakes and ABS optional.

2. The medium rigid: Aumark EST-M at 22 tonnes

The third truck is a heavier step up: the Foton Aumark EST-M 22T, powered by a Dongfeng Cummins ISDe245 30 (engine family ISD6.7) of 6,700 cc, 180 kW / 245 hp, with 950 N·m of torque through a Fast 8JS105TA eight-speed manual. GVW is 22,000 kg on a 4,800 mm wheelbase, with a 5.5-tonne front axle and a 10-tonne rear group, and a 200-litre fuel tank.

The inner cargo-box dimension is 6,500 × 2,400 × 600 mm, and the chassis overall is 8,560 × 2,468 × 2,780 mm. The cab is a row-and-a-half with central locking and electric windows, manual air conditioning standard and electric air conditioning optional, and an MP3 head unit. Suspension is leaf spring (front 10, rear 10+8), brakes are front/rear drum air with ABS, and the truck is left-hand drive. This is the unit for the longer regional haul where the 8.5-tonne pair would be over-cycled.

4. The market labels and the emission gate

All three listings carry a market label that is not Haiti: the Aumark S pair is listed for Africa (Egypt, Tunisia) and Sudan respectively, and the EST-M 22T for Saudi Arabia. As elsewhere in this batch, that is an administrative flag, not a mechanical defect — but it means you must confirm the VIN-level Haitian build (left-hand drive, the body you need, correct documentation) before paying. All three are Euro III; confirm Euro III is accepted for new-truck registration under your Haitian permit, in writing.

5. Choosing between the three for your routes

The decision here is mostly about weight class. The two 8.5-tonne Aumark S units share a 3.76-litre Foton Cummins at 141 hp and 450 N·m, a 4.33 rear axle, and a 5,085 kg payload on unit 225. That is a last-mile and light urban truck: small enough for dense lanes, cheap enough to run in numbers. Between the two, the 3,800 mm wheelbase with the 160-litre tank and longer 5,140 mm body suits slightly longer city-distribution legs, while the 3,360 mm wheelbase with the 120-litre tank turns tighter for the tightest market streets — pick by your worst maneuver, not by price.

The 22-tonne Aumark EST-M is a different tool. Its 245 hp / 950 N·m six-cylinder and 22,000 kg GVW put it in the regional-haul class, carrying roughly 13 tonnes of payload against the 8.5-tonne pair's five. If your work is genuinely urban and light, the EST-M is over-specified and will cost more per kilometre than it earns; if you run any intercity leg with a real load, the lighter pair will be cycled beyond their comfort. The honest split is: Aumark S for the city, EST-M for the city-plus-regional run.

Fuel planning follows the same logic. The 8.5-tonne pair carry 160-litre and 120-litre aluminium tanks — enough for a day of short urban loops, less so for long regional runs — while the EST-M's 200-litre tank stretches the heavier truck's range. Match the tank to the longest typical circuit, not the average, and you avoid a mid-shift fill that costs more in time than the smaller tank saved in weight.

All three are left-hand drive and Euro III, and all three are listed for other markets (Egypt/Tunisia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia). The mechanical choice is straightforward once you match weight to the route; the only shared gate is the administrative one in the checklist below.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Haiti

Haiti applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Ministry of Public Works. Haiti’s road network is thin, and Port-au-Prince is the single gateway. The practical catch is that the road condition and parts availability, not the weighbridge, set the practical limit. The core business is reconstruction and port freight, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.

For a distribution rigid the risk is the axle split — load the nose heavy and the steering axle is over before the gross weight approaches the rated figure, which is the most common cause of a fine on an urban trunk route.

What Haitian fleets already run

In Haiti the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. American and Japanese used trucks dominate, and Foton has to pitch on price and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

6. Pre-order checklist

Confirm the Haitian build in writing. All three are listed for other markets (Africa, Sudan, Saudi Arabia). Verify LHD, body spec and import documentation for Haiti.

Match size to payload. 8.5 t pair for light city work; 22 t EST-M for heavier regional runs. Do not over-specify a 22 t unit for short light loops.

Check the emission acceptance. All Euro III; confirm valid for new registration under your permit.

Pick the Aumark S wheelbase deliberately. 3,800 mm with 160 L tank and longer body, or 3,360 mm for tighter turning and a 120 L tank.

The spread — two 8.5-tonne lights and one 22-tonne medium — covers most Haitian distribution duty without jumping to a tractor. Resolve the market-label and Euro III questions on paper, and the mechanical choices are straightforward.
