Panama Mining & Quarry Haulage: Two Foton Auman GTL 6×4 Tippers (430 PS / 5.26 vs 400 PS / 4.76)

A Panamanian mine or quarry operator buys a tipper for one job: move broken rock, overburden or ore from the face to the crusher, the stockpile or the haul road, day after day, on grades that change with the weather. Panama drives on the right, so the truck must be left-hand drive — and both units listed for this scenario are LHD, which is the correct starting point before any horsepower argument begins.

This article covers exactly one scenario: mining and quarry haulage in Panama. Two 6×4 Auman GTL tippers are listed for it. Both are left-hand drive, both run the 11,800 cc Cummins ISG12, both are Euro III, and both carry a 16 t rear axle group. The differences are in power, final drive, body volume and gross weight — and those differences decide which face of the pit each truck belongs on.

The Auman GTL 6×4 tipper as listed: 11.8 L Cummins ISG12, 16 t rear axle, Euro III, left-hand drive.

1. Power and torque: 430 PS versus 400 PS

The first unit (ID 135) runs a Cummins ISGe3-430: 430 PS with 2,000 Nm held across a 1,000–1,400 rpm band. The second (ID 241) runs a Cummins ISGe3-400: 400 PS with 2,000 Nm quoted at 1,000 rpm. Both make the same 2,000 Nm peak, but the 430 holds it across a 400-rpm window while the 400 holds it at a single point. On a loaded climb out of a quarry that broader band means the 430 stays in its torque without as much downshifting. The 400 is no weakling for a 55 t tipper, but if your ramp is long and graded, the 30 PS and the wider band are worth the price gap.

2. The final-drive choice: 5.26 for the ramp, 4.76 for the road

The ID 135 carries a 5.26 final drive; the ID 241 carries a 4.76 final drive. The 5.26 is the lower, climbing ratio: more torque at the wheel, lower top speed, ideal for short, steep pit ramps and dense loads where you launch from rest repeatedly. The 4.76 is taller: better road speed when the haul between quarry and crusher is longer and flatter, and a little kinder on fuel over distance. Match the ratio to the actual grade and haul length, not to the horsepower — a 5.26 on a long flat road wastes fuel, and a 4.76 on a steep bench leaves you shuffling for gears.

3. Body volume: ~14.2 m³ versus ~19.3 m³

The ID 135 body measures 5,600 (5,400) × 2,300 × 1,100 mm. Taking the 5,400 mm internal floor gives roughly 14.2 m³. The ID 241 body measures 5,600 × 2,300 × 1,500 mm, which is roughly 19.3 m³. Same floor length and width; the 241 is 400 mm taller, so it carries about 5 m³ more per trip — more volume of light, bulky material (overburden, coal, low-density ore) but also a higher centre of gravity when loaded. Gross weights are 50,000 kg (ID 135) and 55,000 kg (ID 241). The 135's 1,100 mm sides suit dense rock where you hit GVW before you fill the box; the 241's 1,500 mm sides suit light, bulky material where volume, not weight, fills the truck first.

Both tippers run an 11-wheel 6×4 with a 350 L aluminium tank and 7.5 t front / 16 t rear axles; body height is the key difference (1,100 mm vs 1,500 mm).

4. Axles, tyres and the wheelbase you feel every day

Both trucks carry a 7.5 t front axle and a 16 t rear group, 11 tyres, a 350 L aluminium tank, manual air conditioning and leaf-spring suspension. The ID 135 rides on 12R22.5 mixed-use tyres; the ID 241 on 12.00R20 radials, with a leaf count of front 10 / rear 12. Wheelbase is where they diverge: 3,575 + 1,350 mm on the 135 against 3,825 + 1,350 mm on the 241 — the 241 is 250 mm longer between its first and second axles, which steadies it on the road but makes it less nimble on a tight bench or a cramped loading point. The 241 also lists its overall length at 8,545 mm against 8,290 mm, so plan your turnaround space accordingly.

5. The "sales country" footnote you must not skip

Both sheets record a sales country that is not Panama: the ID 135 sheet says "Peru" and the ID 241 sheet says "Saudi Arabia". The trucks are left-hand drive, which is correct for Panama, but the published paperwork was written for other markets. That does not invalidate the LHD layout, but it does mean the homologation was not originally prepared for a Panamanian registration. Confirm Panama delivery, LHD registration and Euro III acceptance with the seller in writing before you pay a deposit.

7. Which truck belongs on which face of the pit

Putting the two side by side, the 430 PS / 5.26 unit is the pit-climb specialist: short, steep ramps, dense rock, launch-from-rest work where the lower ratio and the broader torque band keep you in the power instead of hunting for a gear. The 400 PS / 4.76 unit is the volume-and-road truck: longer, flatter hauls between quarry and crusher or plant, where the taller ratio and the ~19.3 m³ body move more material per trip at a steadier pace. Neither is "better" — they are specced for different benches. If your operation is one consistent profile, pick to that profile; if you run both, the two-truck split is exactly what these listings describe. Confirm the tyre standardisation point again: mixing 12R22.5 on the 135 and 12.00R20 on the 241 across the fleet means two spares pools, which is a real operating cost on a remote site where a down truck waits on a courier.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Panama

Panama applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the ATTT. Panama sits on the canal, and Colón and Balboa are among the busiest trans-shipment hubs in the Americas. The practical catch is that the canal traffic sets the pace, and the port-to-depot shuttle is where an over-weight box is scaled every trip. The core business is canal trans-shipment and distribution, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.

For a tipper the binding constraint is the haul from the pit to the trunk road, where the the road authority weighbridge is the point where an over-loaded unit collects its fine — and canal trans-shipment and distribution runs through here, so the box that fills to the headline weight on site can be over the axle caps before it reaches the highway.

What Panamanian fleets already run

In Panama the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. American, Japanese and Chinese trucks mix, and the trans-shipment work favours a fresh, compliant unit. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

8. Pre-order checklist for the Panama haulage buyer

Confirm LHD registration and Euro III. Both are left-hand drive and Euro III — correct for Panama — but get the acceptance confirmed in writing given the sales-country mismatch below.

Match the final drive to your grade. 5.26 for short steep ramps, 4.76 for longer flatter hauls. Do not let price pick the ratio.

Choose the body by material density. ~14.2 m³ at 1,100 mm suits dense rock; ~19.3 m³ at 1,500 mm suits light bulky material. Check your loaded centre of gravity either way.

Resolve the sales-country mismatch. The sheets name Peru and Saudi Arabia, not Panama. Confirm Panama delivery and homologation support before paying.

Confirm the tyre spec against your stock. 12R22.5 on the 135, 12.00R20 on the 241 — standardise if you want one spares pool across a mixed fleet.

Both units are listed as complete vehicles with named homologation figures, which is what makes per-unit import realistic. The prices above are the published listing figures and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and any local bodywork sit on top. Start from the grade and material you actually haul, then work backwards to the body height and the final drive.
