Foton GTL 6×4 55-Tonne Dump Truck for Uruguay Mining & Quarry Haulage

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

A Uruguayan quarry or construction site runs on a different rhythm from a deep mine: shorter hauls, more loading cycles, and a body that has to be sized for both dense aggregate and lighter overburden. The buyer's job is to match the tipper to the ramp grade and the material density, not to chase the biggest number on the sheet. This article does that for one model.

This article covers only one scenario for Uruguay: Mining and Quarry Haulage. We examine a single vehicle, the Foton Auman GTL 6×4 dump truck rated at 55 tonnes, and quote every figure from its specification. The data is consistent on the mechanicals but carries a market-region note and an emission badge you should resolve before import.

The Foton Auman GTL 6×4 dump: 11,800 cc Cummins ISGe3-400, 400 PS, 2,000 N·m, 4.76 final drive, 55 t GVW.

1. The engine and the 4.76 ratio for site work

The GTL carries a Beijing Foton Cummins ISGe3-400, an 11,800 cc six-cylinder rated at 400 PS with 2,000 N·m of torque at 1,000 rpm. The drive axle ratio is 4.76, a low, work-oriented number that suits repeated climbs out of a pit and off-road site ramps rather than highway cruising. Behind the engine is a Fast 12JSD180TA (Q) iron-cased 12-speed manual. For a tipper that spends its life in first and second gear with a loaded box, that low ratio and a robust manual are exactly what you want.

The emission route is listed as Euro III. That is an older standard than the Euro V unit we looked at for Ukraine, and it is the single most important import question for Uruguay: confirm that a Euro III diesel is acceptable for registration and site use in your region before you commit, because a badge mismatch is not something you can fix after the truck lands.

Auman GTL dump body
The 5,600 × 2,300 × 1,500 mm body — a 1,500 mm side height gives more volume than the 1,100 mm variant elsewhere in the range.

2. The box: 5,600 × 2,300 × 1,500 mm

The cargo body internal dimensions are 5,600 mm long, 2,300 mm wide and 1,500 mm high — roughly 19.3 cubic metres before accounting for body shape and material angle of repose. That 1,500 mm side height is taller than the 1,100 mm box on the equivalent Euro V unit, which means this truck is biased toward volume as well as payload. For light overburden and quarry spoils that is an advantage; for very dense rock the payload will hit the axle limit well before the box is full. Either way, the 7.5 t front axle and 16 t middle/rear axle group are the numbers your loaded weight is checked against.

Auman GTL chassis
11 tyres of 12.00R20, 350 L aluminium fuel tank, leaf-spring suspension front 10 / rear 12 on a 225/320 × 90 × (8+7) mm frame.

3. The driver-facing details

The cab is a flat-roof unit with manual air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, an airbag seat and manual mirrors — functional rather than plush, which suits a site truck. Infotainment is MP3, radio and USB with no radar. Brakes are front drum and rear drum on an air system with ABS; the frame section is 225/320 × 90 × (8+7) mm. Tyres are 12.00R20 (Z8) on 11 wheels and the fuel is a 350-litre aluminium tank. Overall length is 8,545 mm. None of it is hard to service, which is the right priority off-road.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Uruguay

Uruguay applies axle-load limits in line with regional Mercosur practice — a single-axle limit around 10–10.5 t, a tandem around 18 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Ministry of Transport. Uruguay moves beef, soy and pulp through Montevideo. The practical catch is that the distances are short by regional standards, so a mid-size rigid and tractor mix fits most work. The core business is agricultural and port freight, and the terrain is the differentiator: a truck bought for flat-ground numbers loses legal capacity where the grade and the bridge limits bite.

For a tipper the binding constraint is the haul from the pit to the trunk road, where the the road authority weighbridge is the point where an over-loaded unit collects its fine — and agricultural and port freight runs through here, so the box that fills to the headline weight on site can be over the axle caps before it reaches the highway.

What Uruguayan fleets already run

In Uruguay the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

Underneath, the specification is unapologetically heavy-duty. Brakes are front drum and rear drum on an air system with ABS, the frame is a 225/320 × 90 × (8+7) mm section, and the tyres are 12.00R20 on 11 wheels. The leaf-spring suspension runs ten leaves at the front and twelve at the rear, which is what lets the truck take the shock of a loaded box dropping on site day after day. The overall length is 8,545 mm and the cab is left-hand drive to match Uruguay.

Against the alternative Euro V GTL we looked at for Ukraine, this Uruguayan unit uses a Fast 12JSD180TA iron-cased gearbox rather than the 12JSDX240TA, and is badged Euro III rather than Euro V. The engine output and the 4.76 ratio are the same family of thinking — a low, climbing gear for site work — but the emission standard is the line that will decide whether it clears your import rules, so treat that as the deciding factor rather than the horsepower.

The fuel is carried in a single 350-litre aluminium tank, a sensible capacity for site cycles where the nearest pump may not be close. Combined with the 7.5 t front and 16 t rear axle ratings and the 4.76 climbing ratio, the specification reads as a balanced tipper rather than a parts-bin special. The 8545 mm length also keeps it within most site gate limits.

Pre-order checklist

Resolve the Euro III import question. The badge is Euro III; confirm Uruguay (and any provincial) acceptance for registration and site operation before ordering.

Confirm the market build. The data's sales-country field reads Saudi Arabia while the listing is assigned to Uruguay; verify the unit matches your region and any local requirements.

Check axle loads against the material. 7.5 t front and 16 t rear are the ratings; dense rock will reach them before the box is full.

Note GCW is not stated. The listing gives GVW 55,000 kg but no combined weight; confirm any trailing-load figure you need in writing.

The GTL is listed as a complete vehicle with a named approval model (BJ3259DLPKB-1). The $60,504 is the published listing price and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — bodywork, freight and duties sit on top. Match the 4.76 ratio and the 1,500 mm box to your actual site and material, then work back to the price.
