Cold-chain transport in Armenia runs a specific profile: a landlocked country with continental temperature swings, distribution from Yerevan to regional towns, and loads that are mostly fresh food rather than deep-frozen pallets. The vehicle configured for Armenia in this category is the Foton Aumark EST-M 4×2, a 22-tonne refrigerated cargo truck. It is a large, simple, diesel chassis built for volume fresh-food transport — and its specification sheet carries one line a cold-chain buyer cannot ignore: the emission standard is Euro II.

This article covers one scenario — cold chain and refrigerated transport in Armenia — and one vehicle. Every figure is from the listing. Two gaps are flagged: the Euro II emission line, and the absence of any refrigeration-unit detail despite the truck being sold as a reefer.

1. The engine and the box volume

The EST-M runs a Yuchai YC6A240-33 (listed as YC6), a 7,225 cc six-cylinder diesel rated 177 hp with 900 N·m of torque. For a 22-tonne GVW chassis doing regional fresh-food runs, that torque band is the working number: it gives usable pull for a fully loaded box leaving a distribution centre without revving hard. Drive goes through a Fast Gear 8JS105TA eight-speed manual (F-8MT), which gives the driver enough ratios to keep the engine in its pull band on the varied grades of the Armenian road network. The drive axle ratio is 4.875.

The cargo box inner dimension is given as 7,800 × 2,450 × 600 mm. That is a long, wide, but low box — a 600 mm internal height is short for a classic walk-in reefer and suggests either a low-profile fresh-produce body or a flat-floor configuration rather than a tall stacked-pallet van. Read it as written and confirm the body style with the supplier, because the inner height strongly affects what you can load. Overall vehicle dimensions are 9,840 × 2,460 × 2,750 mm, with a 5,750 mm wheelbase, and the truck rides on seven 11R22.5 tyres.

2. The refrigeration unit is not on the sheet

The listing describes this as a refrigerated truck and attaches the use cases "refrigerated truck" and "fresh food transport vehicle". But, as with the smaller Algerian reefer in this range, the specification sheet — every line — covers the chassis and says nothing about the cooling equipment: no brand, no model, no temperature range, no standby. For a cold-chain operator this is the most important missing line on the document. A refrigerated truck is only as good as its cooler, and you cannot plan a fresh-food route around a unit you have not been told exists.

Before signing, establish in writing which refrigeration unit is fitted or offered, its temperature range (chilled fresh food versus frozen is a different class), whether it runs off the engine or has independent standby, and how it changes the usable payload below the 22-tonne GVW. The fuel tank is 200 litres, and if the cooler is engine-driven it will consume diesel while the truck is parked at a market, so factor that into your range planning.

3. The Euro II emission line

The single figure that should stop a buyer before anything else is the declared Euro II emission standard. Euro II is an old calibration with no SCR or advanced aftertreatment, which makes the truck mechanically simple but also potentially unregisterable under modern import or environmental rules. The listing records no emission route. If your Armenian import permit or your operating licence requires Euro III, IV, V or VI, this specific unit will not satisfy it, and you must ask the supplier whether a higher-emission variant of the EST-M is available. Do not assume — confirm the emission class against your permit in writing.

4. Cab and the driver's day

The cab is a half-bench seat layout, 2,200 mm wide, with a flat roof — a functional, no-frills driver environment for regional runs. Standard air conditioning is manual, with automatic air conditioning listed as an option; for Armenian summer the automatic option is worth specifying. The standard cab assembly is manual doors, windows and rearview mirrors matched to a 2,450 mm inner-width box, with an option for central locking, power windows, power and heated mirrors. Brakes are air, front and rear drum, with ABS. The front axle is rated 5.5 t and the middle/rear axle 10 t, against the 22,000 kg GVW, and the truck is left-hand drive. The announcement model is BJ1226VMPHN-02, and the unit is a complete vehicle.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Armenia

Armenia follows the post-Soviet weight standard — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem limit up to 24 t and gross combination weight near 44 t — enforced by the Ministry of Transport. Landlocked Armenia hauls freight over mountain roads to Georgia and Iran. The practical catch is that the mountain grades and the long crossings to the ports make durability and parts the deciding factors. The core business is mountain freight and copper haulage, and a truck that is over on any axle is held at the weighbridge until the excess is shed.

For a reefer the weight discipline matters doubly, because a refrigerated body and the diesel for the unit eat into the legal payload before the first carton goes on, and a breakdown mid-run is spoilage, not just downtime.

What Armenian fleets already run

In Armenia the fleet is a mix of Russian KamAZ and MAZ, reconditioned European trucks (MAN, Scania, Volvo), and the newer Chinese entrants — Sinotruk, Shacman and Foton — that are winning share on price and a clean bill of health. The Russian and European stock wins on familiarity and parts but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty, and in a market where a breakdown on a remote corridor is expensive, a fresh truck is often the cheaper bet. Foton’s pitch is that middle ground.

5. Pre-order checklist for the Armenia EST-M reefer

Confirm the Euro II emission against your permit. It is declared, with no aftertreatment route. If Armenia requires a higher standard, this unit will not qualify — ask for a Euro III+ variant before paying.

Name the refrigeration unit in writing. The listing calls it a reefer but gives no cooler brand, model or temperature range. Confirm chilled versus frozen capability and how it is powered.

Clarify the box height. The listed inner height of 600 mm is low for a reefer. Confirm the actual body style and loading method before you plan palletised loads.

Recompute payload after the box and cooler. The 22,000 kg is chassis GVW. Ask for realistic chilled payload after the insulated body and unit are fitted.

The price shown is the published listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties, the refrigeration unit and local registration sit on top. For a cold-chain buyer the cooler and the emission class are the purchase; settle both before anything else.
