Panama Urban & Regional Distribution: One Foton Aumark EST-M 22 t 4x2 Cargo Truck (245 PS)

Panama Urban & Regional Distribution: One Foton Aumark EST-M 22 t 4×2 Cargo Truck (245 PS)

A Panamanian distributor moving consumer goods, construction material or agricultural produce between the city, the Colón Free Zone and the upcountry towns is not buying a highway tractor. You are buying a 4×2 rigid that can take a full 22-tonne payload through city traffic and out to the provinces, with a left-hand-drive cab your drivers already know. The single unit configured for this scenario is the Foton Aumark EST-M 4×2 cargo truck. This article looks only at that one vehicle and the distribution job it is built for.

The EST-M is a 22,000 kg GVW rigid on a 4×2 layout, left-hand drive and Euro III. There is no second model in this scenario to compare it against, so the useful work is in reading the specification line by line and flagging what the sheet does and does not tell you before you commit a deposit.

The Aumark EST-M 4×2 22 t cargo rigid as listed: 245 PS Cummins ISD6.7, Euro III, left-hand drive.

1. The 245 PS ISD6.7 and the 4.875 final drive

Power comes from a Dongfeng Cummins ISD6.7, a 6,700 cc six-cylinder rated at 180 kW (245 PS) with 950 Nm of torque. The headline "245 hp" and the 180 kW power line are the same output stated two ways, so there is no contradiction here — 180 kW is 245 metric horsepower. Behind it sits a Fast 8JS105TA 8-speed manual and a 4.875 final drive. That ratio is on the shorter side, which multiplies torque at the wheel and helps a full 22 t load pull away from rest in stop-start city work, at the cost of some cruising rpm on the highway leg.

2. 22 t GVW, the 6,500 × 2,400 × 600 mm body and seven tyres

The chassis is rated 22,000 kg GVW on a 4,800 mm wheelbase, with a cargo body of 6,500 × 2,400 × 600 mm. That floor is long enough for palletised distribution and tall enough only for low, dense freight — if you intend a high curtain-side or a temperature-controlled box, the 600 mm side height is the factory flat-bed dimension and your bodybuilder will raise the walls. The truck runs on seven 10.00R20 tubed radial tyres, with a 5.5 t front axle and a 10 t mid/rear axle. At 8,560 mm long and 2,468 mm wide it is a true rigid, not a compact van, so plan city delivery points accordingly.

3. Cab, fuel and the driver's day

The cab is a row-and-a-half flat-roof layout with seating for two, central locking and electric windows as standard, and a manual air conditioner as standard with an electric air conditioner option. The fuel tank is a 200 L unit — modest for a 22 t rigid, enough for a day of city and regional loops but tight on a long upcountry run, so check your fuel-stop spacing. Suspension is leaf spring (front 10, rear 10+8), the robust, cheap-to-repair choice. The truck is left-hand drive, correct for Panama's right-hand traffic, and the listing records a top-relevant detail: an MP3 entertainment unit as standard.

4. The sales-country mismatch you must not skip

The listing's "sales country" field names Saudi Arabia, not Panama. The truck is left-hand drive, which is correct for Panama, and Euro III is a workable badge, but the published paperwork was written for another market. That does not invalidate the LHD layout, but it does mean the homologation was not originally prepared for a Panamanian registration. Confirm Panama delivery, LHD registration and Euro III acceptance with the seller in writing before you pay a deposit.

5. How the 22 t EST-M fits Panama's distribution map

For Panama City and the Colón Free Zone the 22 t EST-M is sized for consolidated distribution: palletised goods, construction material and agricultural produce moving between the capital, the free zone and the provinces. The 6,500 mm flat bed is long enough for double-stacked pallets, but the 600 mm side height is the factory floor, so a curtain-side or box body is the real working body and must be specified and priced separately. The 4.875 final drive and the 245 PS give enough launch grunt for city traffic with a full load, while the 200 L tank covers a day of loops without a fill. At 8,560 mm long it needs planning at tight delivery points, and the tubed 10.00R20 tyres are robust but slower-wearing than tubeless — weigh that against your maintenance setup. The row-and-a-half cab gives the driver a rest space on longer provincial runs, which matters when a shift runs past a single city circuit.

Because the truck is left-hand drive, it matches Panama's right-hand traffic with no conversion, and Euro III is a workable badge for the duty. The one standing question is the sales-country field naming Saudi Arabia rather than Panama, so treat the paperwork as written for another market and confirm the Panamanian registration before you pay. Everything else — the ISD6.7, the 8-speed, the 4.875 ratio — is a conventional, supportable distribution specification.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Panama

Panama applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the ATTT. Panama sits on the canal, and Colón and Balboa are among the busiest trans-shipment hubs in the Americas. The practical catch is that the canal traffic sets the pace, and the port-to-depot shuttle is where an over-weight box is scaled every trip. The core business is canal trans-shipment and distribution, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.

For a distribution rigid the risk is the axle split — load the nose heavy and the steering axle is over before the gross weight approaches the rated figure, which is the most common cause of a fine on an urban trunk route.

What Panamanian fleets already run

In Panama the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. American, Japanese and Chinese trucks mix, and the trans-shipment work favours a fresh, compliant unit. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

6. Pre-order checklist for the Panama distribution buyer

Confirm Panama delivery and Euro III. The sheet names Saudi Arabia. Get LHD registration and Euro III acceptance in writing.

Confirm the body you need. The 600 mm side height is the factory flat bed. Specify curtain-side, box or reefer dimensions with your bodybuilder and quote them separately.

Check the fuel range. A 200 L tank suits city loops; plan fuel stops if your runs reach deep into the provinces.

Verify Cummins ISD6.7 support. Confirm a Dongfeng Cummins service network near your base before committing.

Measure city access. At 8,560 mm on a 4×2, confirm it fits your tightest delivery points.

The EST-M is listed as a complete vehicle at $31,770. That figure is the published listing price and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — bodywork, freight and duties sit on top, and the factory flat-bed dimension means you should budget the body separately. Read the spec against your actual routes, and the 22 t EST-M is a defensible distribution workhorse; read it loosely, and the sales-country gap will cost you after delivery.
