A South African fleet buyer specifying tractors for Durban, Gqebera or the Maputo corridor is not choosing between "a truck and a truck." You are choosing between three near-identical 6×4 Auman heads that differ in exactly the places that change your cost per container: the final drive, the gearbox, the retarder, the cab roof and the emission badge. Pick on horsepower alone and you will mis-buy, because the 430, 460 and 560 PS versions are built for three different jobs.
This article covers one scenario only: port and container transport in South Africa. We walk the three listed Auman tractors — two EST variants and one EST-A — and every figure below is taken from the published specification for each unit. No other model is discussed, and nothing is estimated.

The first unit (id 102) is the Auman EST 6×4 at 460 PS. The engine is a Foton Cummins ISGe3-460, 11,800 cc, rated 343 kW / 460 PS at 1,900 rpm, with 2,100 N·m of torque between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm. It runs a ZF 12TX2421TD aluminium 12-speed with a retarder, on a 3.083 final drive. That 3.083 is a long-legged highway ratio — exactly right for a loaded box rolling 400 km up the corridor at steady speed, and the retarder keeps the service brakes alive on the long descent off the highveld.
The axle split is 6.5 t front and 13 t middle/rear, the GCW is 55,000 kg, the tank is a single 700 L aluminium unit, and the rubber is 315/80R22.5 20PR on 11 wheels. Brakes are ABS with a front disc and rear drum. It is a Right-Hand Drive unit (correct for South Africa), with a high-roof cab and manual air conditioning. The listing declares Euro III.
The second unit (id 104) shares the EST platform but is the lower-powered, lower-priced version. The engine is a Foton Cummins ISG 380, 11,800 cc. The headline says 430 hp, but the published power line reads 279 kW / 380 PS at 1,900 rpm — those two figures cannot both be right (380 PS is the consistent one off the 279 kW line), so confirm the exact rating in writing before you order. Torque is 2,000 N·m between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm.
This unit runs a Sinotruk HW-12MT (HW23712 Iron) 12-speed on a 4.111 final drive — shorter than the 460's 3.083, so better for mixed port-and-town work and shorter runs where you launch loaded more often. It is also Right-Hand Drive, with a flat-roof cab, automatic air conditioning, ABS, front drum and rear drum brakes, the same 6.5 t / 13 t axles, 700 L tank and 55,000 kg GCW. Critically, its emission field reads "No Emission Standard" — resolve that against your clearing requirements before depositing.

The third unit (id 108) is the Auman EST-A 6×4 at 560 PS. The engine is a Foton Cummins X13E3-560, 12,900 cc, rated 413 kW / 553 PS (the headline rounds to 560 hp) at 1,800 rpm, with 2,500 N·m at 1,100 rpm. It uses a ZF 12TX2621TD aluminium 12-speed with retarder and a 13 t rear axle at 3.364 — the longest-legged of the three, and the published speed table shows 115 km/h at 3.083-equivalent gearing. Fuel is a generous 760 L + 300 L aluminium pair (1,060 L total), on 315/80R22.5 20PR rubber.
Braking is engine brake plus hydraulic retarder with a disc front and drum rear, the rear suspension is air (non-lifting), and it carries automatic air conditioning. The listed combination weight is 56 t. One honest gap: the id 108 listing does not state Left- or Right-Hand Drive, while the other two explicitly say RHD. If you need an RHD unit for South Africa, get that confirmed in writing for this specific variant before you pay.
| Model (South Africa list) | Drive | Power | Final drive | GCW | Emission | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auman EST 6×4 | 6×4, RHD | 460 PS (2,100 N·m) | 3.083 | 55 t | Euro III | $55,600 |
| Auman EST 6×4 (430) | 6×4, RHD | 380 PS (2,000 N·m)* | 4.111 | 55 t | None declared | $45,880 |
| Auman EST-A 6×4 | 6×4** | 560 PS (2,500 N·m) | 3.364 | 56 t | Euro III | $58,800 |
*Headline reads 430 hp; the published power line reads 279 kW / 380 PS — confirm the exact figure. **Drive-hand not stated on the id 108 listing; the other two are RHD.

South Africa has the strictest axle-load regime in the region. The statutory maxima are a single-axle limit of 9 t (steering) and 10 t on other single axles, a tandem limit of 18 t and a tridem limit of 24 t, with gross combination weight capped at 56 t and a bridge formula that restricts where a load can sit. SANRAL weighbridges on the N1, N3 and N4 are automated and unforgiving, and overload fines are enforced in court, not at the roadside. Durban is the busiest container port, and the Durban–Gauteng N3 corridor is the highest-density freight route in the country, so a legal 56 t rig is the baseline, not the target.
For a container tractor the real exposure is the Durban access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.
South Africa is the most competitive truck market Foton faces: Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Scania and UD Trucks are assembled locally, and the used market is deep with European and Japanese stock, while Sinotruk, Shacman and Foton are the newer Chinese entrants fighting on price. A new Foton is not competing against a tired import here — it is competing against a financed European truck with a dense service network. The pitch has to be on acquisition cost and total cost of ownership for operators who run hard, not on the badge.
Match the final drive to the route. 3.083 for long corridor cruising, 3.364 for the 560's high-speed work, 4.111 for mixed port-and-town. Ordering a 4.111 for a 600 km highway run costs you fuel and speed.
Confirm the 430 PS power figure. The id 104 headline (430 hp) and the detail line (380 PS) disagree; get the rated PS in writing.
Resolve emission declarations. The 430 PS unit shows no emission standard; the other two are Euro III. Match each to your permit before depositing.
Verify RHD on the EST-A. The 560 PS unit does not state drive-hand; confirm it is Right-Hand Drive for South Africa.
Check the retarder fitment. The 460 and 560 both list a retarder; the 430 runs a Sinotruk iron box without one. On the long grade it is worth more than 30 horsepower.
All three are complete vehicles with named model codes, which is what makes per-unit clearing practical. Prices shown are the published listing figures and are a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and any local bodywork sit on top. Start from the route, then work back to the ratio and the badge.
