Most tractors are sold against an average day. This one is sold against the heavy end of yours: the loaded tipper at the weighbridge, the lowbed that must start on a grade, the descent a lighter rig survives only by riding its brakes. The Auman EST 6×4 460 hp prime mover is built to a 90-tonne gross combination weight, listed at $64,759 for Oman, and specified with a hydraulic retarder rather than an engine brake alone. That line item tells you more about the intended duty than the horsepower does.
The product model is BJ4259SMFKB-A5, vehicle name semi-trailer tractor, grade EST, drive type 6×4, cab high roof, body status EST-2490. Kerb weight is 10,800 kg, maximum design gross mass (GVW) is 25,000 kg, and gross combination mass is 90 t. The two numbers that matter most for heavy work are the design saddle load, 14,070 kg, and the permitted trailer mass, 79,070 kg.
That saddle figure is the one bulk and machinery operators should check with their thumb, because kingplate load is where a loaded tipper or a heavy lowbed actually punishes a tractor. A lighter 4×2 with a 13-tonne rear rating cannot accept that load without exceeding an axle. This chassis receives it through two driven axles, a cast bridge rear end and a balanced suspension.
"Check the distribution, not the headline. Kingplate load at full product is what decides whether a combination is legal, not the 90 t badge."
Power is from the Foton Cummins ISGe5-460: 11,800 ml, high-pressure common rail, Euro V, silicone-oil fan, rated 331 kW (460 hp) at 1,900 rpm with peak torque of 2,300 N·m at 1,100 rpm. For heavy work the torque figure is the headline, because a laden prime mover pulls away and climbs a haul-road ramp at low engine speed, and every hundred revs spent hunting for power is fuel burnt without kilometres bought.
The gearbox is the ZF 12TX2421TD aluminium twelve-speed automated manual, and the specification line names the retarder explicitly: 12TX2421TD aluminum (Q + retarder), with automatic actuation and a Φ430 pull-type clutch that is electronically controlled. An automated box buys consistency rather than novelty — shift points that do not drift with driver mood, and a clutch nobody rides on a ramp. The decisive item is the hydraulic retarder coupled into the transmission. Braking a 90-tonne combination is a thermal problem before it is a friction one, and a retarder sheds most of that energy continuously through the transmission fluid, keeping the drums cool for the moment they are actually needed.
The rear axle is a 16 t Mercedes-type unit with 4.03 ratio, self-adjusting arms and ABS, in a cast axle housing; the front axle is rated 9 t. The record lists three available ratios against tested maximum speeds of 89 km/h (3.86), 85 km/h (4.03) and 82 km/h (4.2), with a speed limit value of 110 km/h. Maximum gradeability is ≥25%.
This is a route-profile decision. The 3.86 suits long, flat, governed corridors. The 4.03 is the balanced default and is what this unit is built with. The 4.2 trades terminal speed for wheel multiplication and is the one to specify for ramps, plateau exits or loaded starts on loose surfaces. Choosing wrong compounds quietly: an over-geared truck shifts constantly and burns fuel chasing revs, while an under-geared truck gives away fuel because the limiter governs it back anyway. Give the seller your laden average speed, steepest regular grade and daily kilometres.
The rails are 225/286 × 80 × (8+7) mm with outer width 900 mm forward and 850 mm behind. Rear suspension is an integral balanced leaf-spring bogie with twelve leaves, against nine at the front, plus an anti-roll bar and shock absorbers. A balanced bogie shares kingplate load across both driven axles and lets the bogie hinge over ruts and ramp angles instead of unloading one wheel — traction an unbalanced rig loses the moment the tip is full. Tyres are 295/80R22.5 18PR, with the AM90H-VS steering gear on the nine-tonne front axle.
Service braking is dual-circuit air with drums front and rear and a spring-actuated, air-release parking brake. Drums are cheap to reline and every heavy workshop understands them; the retarder is what protects them and the tyres on every downgrade. Overall dimensions are 7,105 × 2,540 × 3,850 mm unladen and 3,750 mm laden, on a 3,300 + 1,400 mm wheelbase with 2,061 / 1,865 mm tracks. Check those against your depot and route envelopes.
The cab is the EST-2490 high-roof body for two occupants: automatic air conditioning, electric windows, central and remote locking with five-lock unification, an air-sprung heated high-spec driver seat with high armrest and electrically heated mirrors. Infotainment is MP3, radio and USB with no radar. Electrical supply is a 240 Ah AGM battery, which tolerates deep cycling better than a conventional unit. Fuel sits in a 700 L aluminium tank, bumpers are split metal, and there is a working platform behind the cab. A fifth wheel is listed as optional — confirm it is included and get the plate height specified.
"A hydraulic retarder is not a comfort option on a 90-tonne rig. It is the difference between arriving on schedule and arriving with hot linings."
The commercial terms are worth writing into the contract exactly as listed: bank transfer, 30% in advance with the 70% balance before delivery; a 45-working-day manufacturing cycle from receipt of payment; quotation validity of 30 days; and a 12-month product warranty. At $64,759 listed, with an FOB figure of $52,650 in the pack, the gap is freight and import — ask which basis your quotation uses.
The listed use cases are 6×4 prime mover, mining haulage, bulk cargo transport and heavy haulage. The natural home is heavy bulk movement between pit, plant, port and depot, where a tipper at ninety tonnes gross is exactly what the saddle rating and retarder were dimensioned for. The second case is project and machinery logistics on a multi-line lowbed, where kingplate load spikes past anything a road tractor sees. What this is not is a line-haul tractor chasing kilometres: its ratios, retarder and ratings aim at load density and grades.
The 3.86 suits long, flat, fully governed corridors; the 4.03 is the balanced default this unit is built with; the 4.2 is the one to specify for ramps, plateau exits or loaded starts on loose surfaces. Choose wrong and the cost compounds quietly: an over-geared truck shifts constantly and burns fuel chasing revs, while an under-geared truck gives away fuel because the limiter governs it back anyway.
Check the distribution, not the headline. The design figures are a 25,000 kg gross tractor mass on 9 t front and 16 t rear ratings, a 14,070 kg saddle load and 79,070 kg of permitted trailer behind it. The practical test before ordering: weigh your heaviest typical combination by axle at a certified bridge, compare each group against those ratings, and confirm what your country permits per axle on public roads, because some jurisdictions cap the combination well below ninety tonnes.
It is manageable only if the fuel system is treated as part of the purchase. High-pressure common rail tolerates contamination far less than mechanical injection, and a Euro V engine with aftertreatment adds components that poor fuel can damage in weeks rather than years. Operators manage it three ways: documented-quality suppliers, secondary filtration and water separation at the depot pump, and not letting fuel sit long enough to breed contamination. Euro V buys access to corridors that restrict emission levels, and pays for it with sensitivity to what goes into the tank.
Confirm the optional fifth wheel is included and get its plate height and kingpin setting in writing. Confirm the ratio actually fitted to your unit, since three are offered. Ask what the 12-month warranty covers and who performs it in Oman. Check the 3,850 mm unladen height against your route restrictions, and get parts lead times for the ZF transmission and common-rail components locally.
If your work is bulk, mining or machinery haulage where kingplate load and long descents define the day, this is the specification to shortlist: cast rear bridge, balanced bogie, hydraulic retarder and a torque curve that arrives at 1,100 rpm. If your work is line-haul kilometres on flat corridors, a lighter ratio and a simpler tractor will cost you less and do the job. Full configuration, ratio options and current pricing for the Auman EST 460 prime mover are on the product page.
