Auman GTL 8x4 Electric Concrete Mixer: Sizing the Battery to Your Route

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

An electric mixer truck is a different kind of purchase from a diesel one. You are no longer comparing engines and fuel consumption; you are comparing battery capacity against your daily route, your charging window and the ambient temperature you work in. Get that sizing wrong and the truck is a very expensive yard ornament for six hours a day. The Foton Auman GTL 8x4 electric concrete mixer is listed from 50,000 USD across three announcement variants, with two battery packs and one motor. Working out which pack fits your route is the single decision that matters, and the good news is that the rest of the specification is unusually sensible.

Start with the weights: 31 tonnes is the ceiling, not the target

Rated load is 16.87 tonnes and vehicle weight is 14 tonnes, which puts the chassis at roughly 31 tonnes gross. That works, and it is the number you should plan against. The mixing dynamic volume is 7.7 cubic metres, but the drum's geometric volume is 12 cubic metres — so the drum is not the limiting factor, the mass rating is. Anyone who tells you a 7.7 m³ mixer is small because the number looks low is reading the wrong figure.

The load sits on a 6.5-tonne front axle and a 13-tonne Steyr rear axle, riding on twelve 11.00-20 18PR tyres. That is the right spread for a loaded mixer on site roads, and the Steyr rear axle is a name your workshop is likely to know. Overall dimensions are 10.12 × 2.53 × 3.995 m, with track at 2,020 mm front and 1,830 mm rear. Check that length against your batching plant and your tightest site gate before you order — at over ten metres, this is a full-size eight-wheeler, not a city unit.

"On an electric mixer, the battery is not a specification — it is the route plan. Size it against your longest day, not your average one."

The motor is fixed; the battery is the decision

The motor is a TEBAJIA TZ400XSTPG46 permanent magnet synchronous unit rated at 260 kW with a peak of 400 kW. It is identical across the variants, so you are not choosing between power levels. What you are choosing is the pack: two capacities are offered under the same BJ5319GJBEVGRF-03 announcement model, and the price difference between them is about 3,000 USD.

Real consumption on a mixer depends on four things: haul distance, site gradients, how many discharge cycles you run, and ambient temperature. A drum turning all day is a continuous parasitic load that a tipper does not have, and cold weather costs you range twice — once in battery chemistry and once in cabin heating. Share your daily route and pour schedule with the dealer and make them size the pack and the charging window with you, rather than buying the larger pack as insurance and paying for capacity you never use.

Two questions to put in writing before you sign. First, what charging power the truck accepts and what that means for your overnight window — a pack that needs fourteen hours will not fit a two-shift operation. Second, where charging happens: if your depot has no three-phase supply yet, that installation is part of the purchase cost and should be priced alongside the truck, not discovered in month two.

A ZF twelve-speed on an electric truck, and why that makes sense

This is the detail that tells you the chassis was engineered rather than converted. The transmission is a ZF 12TX2420TD with twelve gears, driving through a 4.38 final ratio, and the specification still lists a Φ430 clutch. Twelve speeds on an electric mixer is not redundancy: it gives strong low-speed pull for a loaded start on an unconsolidated site track, and it keeps the motor in an efficient band on the road section between plant and pour.

Top speed is 80 km/h, which is the honest limitation of this machine. For moving between nearby sites it is irrelevant; if your quarry or a remote pour is far from the batching plant, plan the journey time accordingly. Spring leaves are 3/3/5 and the steering gear is listed as domestic — worth confirming what that means for parts availability in your market, since steering components are not something you want to wait on.

The frame is 286 × 80 × (8+6) mm, with twelve 11.00-20 18PR tyres on a 6.5-tonne front and 13-tonne Steyr rear axle. That combination is built for rough ground, which answers the question of whether this truck can work unpaved mine and quarry roads: the running gear says yes.

"Twelve gears and a 4.38 final ratio on an electric mixer is not over-engineering. It is what gets 31 tonnes moving on a rutted site track."

Which duty profiles suit this truck, and which do not

The obvious fit is urban ready-mix: a fixed depot with an overnight charging window, predictable daily routes of modest distance, and a customer base that increasingly asks about emissions in its tender documents. In that duty the truck's strengths — zero tailpipe emissions, low noise on early-morning city deliveries, and no diesel or AdBlue purchases — line up directly with what the work demands.

The second fit is quarry, mine and infrastructure work on private ground, where the 8x4 running gear and the 4.38 ratio earn their keep and where noise and fumes in enclosed or semi-enclosed space are a genuine problem. The profile that does not fit is long-distance haulage from a remote plant, or any operation without a reliable charging window at the depot. If you cannot guarantee where the truck charges each night, this is not your machine yet.

Price, running cost and the questions the sheet raises

Prices across the three listed variants run from 50,000 to 53,000 USD, with the pack choice accounting for roughly 3,000 USD of that spread. Against a diesel 8x4 mixer, the argument is running cost: no fuel, no AdBlue, fewer moving parts in the driveline, and zero tailpipe emissions, which increasingly matters for urban contracts and for sites with air-quality conditions written into the tender.

The honest counter-argument is electricity cost, charger installation, battery degradation over your ownership period, and residual value — none of which appear in this pack. Ask the dealer for a warranty position on the battery specifically, in writing, including what capacity retention is guaranteed and over what term. That single clause is worth more than the 3,000 USD difference between packs.

One oddity worth raising: the equipment list mentions a 350-litre aluminium fuel tank, which is clearly a carry-over line from the diesel specification. Ask whether that space is used for anything on the electric build — a water tank, for instance — and confirm what the actual water capacity is, because wash-down water matters on a mixer. Also confirm the cab specification beyond electric windows and central locking: the sheet says GTL medium long flat roof and nothing further about seats or air conditioning, both of which affect driver retention on long urban shifts.

Finally, confirm which announcement model you are buying — BJ5319GJBEVGRF-01 or BJ5319GJBEVGRF-03 — because that determines the pack options available to you. The Auman GTL electric mixer page is where you settle it.

Questions buyers ask before signing

Can the 7.7 m³ mixer carry a full 31 t GVW?

Yes. With a 14-tonne kerb weight and 16.87-tonne rated load, the chassis works out at roughly 31 tonnes gross. Note that 7.7 m³ is the dynamic mixed-concrete volume, while the drum's geometric volume is 12 m³, so the drum is not the limiting factor. The load sits on a 6.5-tonne front axle and a 13-tonne Steyr rear axle on 11.00-20 18PR tyres, the right spread for a loaded mixer on site roads.

Which battery pack suits my route, 350 or 361 kWh?

Both packs are offered under the same BJ5319GJBEVGRF-03 announcement model, and the price difference is about 3,000 USD. The motor is identical either way — 260 kW rated, 400 kW peak. Real consumption depends on haul distance, site gradients, how many discharge cycles you run and ambient temperature, so share your daily route and pour schedule and size the pack and charging window together.

Can it work on unpaved mine and quarry roads?

The 8x4 layout, 286 × 80 × (8+6) mm frame, 13-tonne Steyr rear axle and 11.00-20 18PR tyres are built for rough ground, and the 4.38 final ratio through the ZF 12TX2420TD twelve-speed gives strong low-speed pull. The main limitation is the 80 km/h top speed — fine for moving between nearby sites, but worth planning for if your quarry is far from the batching plant.

What is not on the sheet?

No charging power, charging time, range, warranty term, battery degradation guarantee or water tank capacity is published. No cab detail beyond windows and central locking, and no service network commitment. Ask for all of it before you commit, and be especially firm on the battery warranty clause.
