Around a Guatemalan port — Puerto Quetzal, Puerto Barrios — not every job is pulling a 40-foot container on a semi. A great deal of the work is moving loose and break-bulk cargo, palletised boxes, and agricultural produce between the yard, the warehouse and the short-haul distribution point. For that, a capable rigid with a long flatbed and a strong turbo-diesel is the right tool, and it is far cheaper to run than a tractor head that would sit half-empty on a yard shuttle.
This article covers one scenario for Guatemala: port and container transport. There is one Foton listing that fits the support role, the Aumark EST-M 18-tonne 4×2, and every figure below comes from its specification sheet. Two honesty notes: this is a rigid cargo truck, not a tractor head, so it shuttles and transfers cargo rather than pulling a semi-trailer; and the sheet lists the sales country as Peru, not Guatemala, so confirm Guatemalan delivery and documentation before ordering.

The EST-M is rated at 18,000 kg gross vehicle weight on a 4×2 layout, on the EST-M platform. The wheelbase is 5,150 mm and the overall chassis dimension is 8,800 × 2,320 × 2,750 mm. Axle ratings are 4.2 t at the front and 9 t at the rear, with tubeless 11R22.5 tyres. The cargo body internal dimensions are 6,800 × 2,300 × 600 mm. That is a long, flat load floor ideal for pallets, sacks and crated goods moving around a port or to a near-inland depot. It is not a tractor, so it does not couple to a container chassis — be clear that its role is transfer and short-haul, not line-haul container pull.
The engine is a Dongfeng Cummins ISDe245 30 (ISD6.7), 6,700 cc, diesel, producing 245 hp (180 kW) with 950 N·m of torque, through a Fast 8JS118TA-B eight-speed manual (listed as F-8MT). The drive axle ratio is 4.556. That is a strong, flexible package for an 18-tonne loaded rigid: enough torque to move off with a full box in a crowded yard, and an eight-speed box to hold a sensible rpm on the short motorway hop to an inland warehouse. The 4.556 final drive is a balanced ratio, not a crawler, not an overspeed cruiser.

The cab is an extended cab, 2,200 mm wide, with two seats and a flat roof — the extended cab gives a little extra stowage or a rest space versus a pure day cab. Standard air conditioning is manual, and the standard body package includes central locking and power windows. The fuel tank is 200 L, a workable range for yard-to-inland loops. Brakes are front and rear drum on an air-brake system with ABS, and steering is left-hand drive. Suspension is leaf spring front and rear, the right choice for a working flatbed.

For a truck that lives in a port yard and on the short hop inland, the running gear is where the money is won or lost. The EST-M runs on tubeless 11R22.5 tyres, a size common across Central America and cheap to replace, with axle ratings of 4.2 t front and 9 t rear and leaf-spring suspension. The 200 L fuel tank is adequate for yard-to-depot loops that return daily, and the 4.556 drive-axle ratio keeps the engine in a working band whether the truck is crawling through gate queues or rolling on the motorway. At 18,000 kg GVW with a 6,800 mm floor, this is a nimble, low-cost hauler rather than a heavy specialist — and that is precisely why it suits the transfer role better than a far more expensive tractor head would. The lower purchase price also frees capital for the reefer, trailer or warehouse investment that actually moves your freight.
The EST-M is Euro III. Confirm that this meets your Guatemalan import permit rather than assuming, since some markets now expect Euro IV or higher for new diesels. Separately, the specification sheet lists the sales country as Peru, not Guatemala. That does not mean the truck cannot be supplied to Guatemala, but it does mean you should confirm with the supplier that Guatemalan delivery, documentation and any local compliance are handled before you pay a deposit.
Guatemala applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Ministry of Communications. Guatemala moves banana, coffee and sugar from the highlands to the Pacific and Caribbean ports. The practical catch is that the mountain grades and the wet-season roads punish an over-loaded rigid, so the axle distribution has to be right at the gate. The core business is banana, coffee and export freight, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.
For a container tractor the real exposure is the Puerto Quetzal and Santo Tomás access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.
In Guatemala the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Japanese reconditioned and Chinese trucks mix, and Foton has to pitch on price and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.
Be clear it is a rigid, not a tractor. This truck transfers and shuttles cargo on its own flatbed; it does not pull a semi-trailer or container chassis. If you need container pull, specify a tractor head separately.
Confirm Guatemalan delivery. The sheet lists the sales country as Peru. Verify the supplier can deliver and document the unit for Guatemala.
Check the Euro III acceptance. Confirm the emission level meets your import permit before ordering.
Match axle load to your cargo. Front 4.2 t, rear 9 t, GVW 18,000 kg. Confirm your typical load stays inside these ratings at the weighbridge.
The EST-M is listed as a complete vehicle, which keeps the import simple. The price above is the published listing figure and is a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duties and any local bodywork sit on top. For port-area transfer and short-haul freight, this rigid is the right shape; just confirm the destination and emission details in writing first.
