A chassis sheet ends where the bodybuilder begins. Everything the factory publishes — the 5150 mm wheelbase, the 8800×2320×2750 mm envelope, the 234 mm frame section — exists to be built on, and the one row that tells you what will be built is the superstructure line: 6800×2300×600 mm, 15.6 square metres of floor with a 600 mm board height. Three businesses fit that floor, and the same frame behaves differently in each.
The configurations compared here
Take the published floor at face value: 6.8 metres by 2.3 is 15.6 m². In the common export pallet footprint of 1,200 × 1,000 mm that is 5 pallets lengthwise with 800 mm left over, 2 across, so 10 pallets per floor layer before anything is stacked — arithmetic from the sheet's own numbers, not a brochure claim. The 2200 mm body width keeps the finished machine inside the regional envelope while the 6800 mm internal length gives the bodybuilder a long, well-supported floor between the axles rather than a tail-heavy overhang.
The material decision belongs to the bodybuilder, and it is worth more than any engine option on this sheet. An aluminium or composite panel box recovers mass a steel van quietly spends, and on a 9T drive axle that recovered payload lands where it does most good. A refrigeration unit on the front face moves mass the other way, onto the lighter 4.2T steer axle — which is why the site's cold-chain reading of this platform, Cold Chain & Refrigerated in Costa Rica: Foton Aumark Chassis for Reefer Bodies, is worth reading before the box is drawn. The same model is also sold complete with a body already fitted, at $32,595 against this bare frame's $35,500 — see Aumark EST-M 18T: 6,800 mm of Bed Inside a 2,320 mm Width for that reading, and Port & Container Transport in Costa Rica for the quay-transfer duty the same wheelbase serves behind a curtain side.
For construction supply, coffee, feed and seasonal produce, the 600 mm board height is the starting geometry rather than the finish. Low sides keep the bed accessible from either side by forklift, crane or hand, so loading does not depend on a raised dock at every stop, and a stake body on the same frame carries the awkward lengths — tube, rod, timber — that a closed box refuses. This is the duty where the sheet's light spring packs, Front 3, rear 4+3, earn their keep: less interleaf friction, a more compliant ride over broken asphalt, and less shock transmitted into the load.

This is also the duty where the honest warning applies most sharply. Dense freight — cement, block, steel — loads the 9T drive axle long before a weighbridge reads the published 18000 kg, because the installed axles sum to 13.2 tonnes against an 18-tonne gross rating. The bodybuilder's drawing and the certificate, not the header, decide what this truck may legally carry in drop-side form. Where the round adds sustained gradients to dense freight, the 270 hp chassis of the same class is the comparison worth making — same axles, same ratio, 198 kW / 270 PS and 970 N·m against this sheet's 180 and 950 N·m.
For water, fuel and sanitation work — the municipal and contractor duty the record's own prose names — the chassis is bought for its frame stations and its published footprint rather than for its bed. A tank shell is mounted to those stations, baffled to the axle loads, and the whole machine lives or dies by the coupling points the factory drills. Two rows on this sheet matter more here than anywhere else: the Air brake system with ABS, which a laden tanker asks harder questions of than any box, and the 200L fuel tank, which sets the day's radius for a service round. The site's Municipal Spec Clinic: Seven Foton Water, Sweeper and Refuse Chassis Answered and its seven-point checklist for a fuel or powder tanker read this duty across the wider range.
One row is missing, and on this duty it is the first question: no power take-off appears anywhere on the sheet. If the body needs one — a pump, a blower, a small crane — it belongs on the order confirmation, not in an assumption.
| Frame row | Published value | What it does for a bodybuilder |
|---|---|---|
| Frame section | 234 mm | Duty-grade rail with clamping length for U-bolts; no reinforcement needed for a panel body. |
| Suspension | Leaf spring, Front 3, rear 4+3 | Progressive rear pack: rides empty, stiffens under load. |
| Rear axle | 9T at ratio 4.556 | The governing constraint for every body; overload shows as spring-seat fatigue and hub heat. |
| Front axle | 4.2T | Limits how much cab-end structure, a reefer unit or a tank baffle may add. |
| Tyres | Tubeless tire (imperial) 11R22.5, 7 | Plug-repairable at the roadside, retreadable, stocked in every tyre shop. |
| Fuel tank | 200L | A day-radius workhorse; route planning, not long-haul range. |
| Auxiliary brake | not stated | Descent energy is absorbed by gear selection and linings on every one of the three bodies. |
The sequence is the same whichever body wins. Build the body on paper first, against the 6800×2300×600 mm footprint and the frame stations. Weigh the bare chassis once at delivery. Write the door payload from the completed-vehicle certificate rather than from the 12t cargo row or any header. The factory's numbers describe the frame; the certificate describes the truck, and only one of the two can be registered.
Send the body drawing, the cargo density and the route profile with the enquiry.
Confirm the power take-off, the steering gear type and the option ladder in writing.
Ask for the completed-vehicle certificate masses: tare, axle loads at build, permitted payload.
Price the body material deliberately — on a 9T axle, payload recovery is the only free performance available.
