El Salvador Port & Container Transport: The Foton Aumark EST-M 18T for Quay Transfers and Intermodal Last-Mile

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

At a Salvadoran port the container tractor gets the headline, but a lot of real work is done by the rigid that transfers cargo from the quay to the warehouse, runs construction material to a site near the coast, and handles the intermodal last mile that a semi cannot. For that role a fleet buyer wants a truck with a long flat body, enough power to move a full load in coastal heat, and a GVW that does not need a heavy-truck licence class if the local rule draws the line there. This article covers one truck built for exactly that.

The vehicle is the Foton Aumark EST-M 18T 4×2 cargo truck (approved model BJ1186VLPHK-1), assigned to the port and container transport scenario. Every figure below is from the listing. One flag up front: the source data stamps this unit "sales country: Peru" while this article is written for El Salvador — if that affects your homologation, confirm the destination build in writing before ordering.

Foton Aumark EST-M 18T cargo truck for El Salvador port
The Aumark EST-M 18T: Dongfeng Cummins ISDe245 30, 245 PS (180 kW), 950 N·m, 4×2.

1. What 18T and a 6.8m body actually gives the port

The EST-M is a 4×2 rigid with a declared GVW of 18,000 kg, on the EST-M platform. The cargo body internal dimensions are 6,800 × 2,300 × 600 mm — a long, wide floor that takes palletised quay cargo, crates and building material without a trailer. The overall chassis is 8,800 × 2,320 × 2,750 mm on a 5,150 mm wheelbase, and the cab is an extended cab 2,200 mm wide with two seats. This is the size that shuttles between the port gate and a city depot all day, where a 6×4 tractor would be overkill and a 5-tonne van would be too small.

The weight is split as a 4.2-tonne front axle and a 9-tonne rear axle. Note the 9 t rear rating: it sets the real legal payload once bodywork and driver are weighed, and it is the number your weighbridge will read against.

2. The powertrain: a 6.7L Cummins and why 950 N·m suits transfer work

The engine is a Dongfeng Cummins ISDe245 30, a 6,700 cc six-cylinder diesel declared at 245 PS (180 kW) with 950 N·m of torque. The 245 PS and 180 kW figures are the same output stated two ways, so there is no mismatch to resolve. Drive goes through a Fast 8JS118TA-B eight-speed manual (F-8MT), and the drive axle runs a 4.556 final ratio — a road ratio that pulls a full 18 tonnes away from the dock yet cruises the coastal highway without over-revving.

Cargo body 6,800 × 2,300 × 600 mm, 11R22.5 tubeless tyres, 5,150 mm wheelbase, 200 L tank.

For transfer work the 950 N·m matters more than the 245 PS. A flat torque curve from a 6.7 L six means the truck holds a gear climbing out of the port gate without constant downshifting, and the eight-speed box gives a usable spread between a crawling dock speed and a steady cruise. The fuel tank is a 200 L unit — enough for a full shift of shuttles without a mid-day fill.

3. Tyres, frame and the cab the crew uses

The truck rides on tubeless 11R22.5 tyres, a size stocked across Central America, which keeps a puncture from becoming a stranded day. The frame section is 234 mm, a heavy section built for a working rigid. Braking is air brake with front and rear drums and ABS; suspension is leaf spring. The cab is a flat-roof extended cab with central locking and power windows as standard, and manual air conditioning as standard — realistic, serviceable kit for a port truck.

4. The emission line and the destination stamp to question

The listing is Euro III. Whether that registers in El Salvador is not stated on the sheet, and I will not guess at local rules — confirm the required emission standard with your import agent before you commit. Separately, the source data stamps this unit "sales country: Peru." If your order is genuinely for El Salvador, ask the exporter to confirm in writing that the build and paperwork match your destination, because a Peru-homologated unit may carry options or badges that differ from what your permit expects. This is the one open question that can turn a smooth import into a customs fight.

5. Tyres, fuel and the support network

The unglamorous lines are what keep this truck working. The 11R22.5 tubeless tyres are stocked across Central America, so a quay-side puncture is a same-day fix. The 200 L tank covers a full shift of port shuttles or a regional run without a mid-day fill. Leaf-spring suspension, drum-air brakes with ABS and a flat-roof extended cab are the kit local workshops already know, and the 6,800 mm body gives a long, low loading floor that a forklift can work from either side. For a Salvadoran operator the question is not whether the truck is capable — it is whether the build matches your permit, which is the section above.

Axle-load law and the road reality in El Salvador

El Salvador applies axle-load limits drawn from the NAFTA / Central-American practice — a single-axle limit around 10 t, a tandem around 20 t and gross combination weight near 45 t — enforced by the Vice-Ministry of Transport. El Salvador is compact and dense, moving coffee and sugar to Acajutla. The practical catch is that the market is small and the distances are short, so a nimble rigid fits most work. The core business is coffee, sugar and port freight, and a truck that is over on the mountain climb or the wet coastal road is the most common failure.

For a container tractor the real exposure is the Acajutla access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.

What Salvadoran fleets already run

In El Salvador the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu and Hino dominate the second-hand market — with European brands (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz) in the premium segment, Sinotruk and Shacman as the established Chinese players, and local assembly in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Japanese reconditioned and Chinese trucks mix, and Foton has to pitch on price and a clean bill of health. The mountain grades and long corridors are where a fresh, correctly specced truck beats a tired one, and that is Foton’s pitch.

6. Pre-order checklist for El Salvador port transfer

Confirm the emission standard. The truck is Euro III. Match it to your Salvadoran import permit before paying.

Resolve the destination stamp. The listing reads "sales country: Peru." Get written confirmation that your El Salvador order carries the correct build and paperwork.

Weigh your real payload. GVW is 18,000 kg and the rear axle is 9 t. Subtract body, fuel and driver to know the cargo you can carry legally.

Check the body against your cargo. The floor is 6,800 × 2,300 × 600 mm. Confirm it takes your pallets and crate sizes before you commit.

Confirm the licence class. An 18T GVW may fall in a different licence tier than a light truck where you operate. Verify with your transport authority.

The EST-M 18T is a complete vehicle with a named approval model, which keeps import simple. The $32,595 is the published listing price and a starting point for enquiry, not a landed cost — freight, duty and any bodywork sit on top. Start with the emission and destination checks, then the body dimensions.
