Foton Aumark S 8.5T Flatbed for Tunisian Ports: A Euro III Light Truck With Three Spec Conflicts to Resolve

Writer:Alan Chen(Foton Auman dealer)

Tunisian ports — Tunis, Radès, Sfax — do not only move 40-foot boxes on yard tractors. A great deal of port and container-related work is lighter: shifting empty containers on a flatbed, feeding a container depot with chassis, moving break-bulk and equipment around the terminal, and running short regional legs to a logistics park. For that tier of work a heavy 6×4 tractor is overkill and a 4×2 light truck is the right tool. This article looks at one such vehicle listed for the Tunisian scenario: the Foton Aumark S 8.5-tonne flatbed cargo truck, listing id 236.

It is a left-hand-drive (Tunisia drives on the right), single-row 4×2 with a Foton Cummins 3.8-litre engine and a payload of 5,115 kg on the flatbed. The specification is mostly complete, but the listing carries three internal conflicts — emission label, transmission code and the fate of ABS — that a buyer must resolve in writing before ordering. Everything below is from the published sheet.

1. The engine and the gearbox it actually ships with

The truck is powered by the Foton Cummins F3.8s3141, a 3.76-litre four-cylinder diesel rated at 105 kW with 450 Nm of torque. That is a modest, fuel-efficient output well suited to yard and short-haul work rather than motorway cruising — the published maximum speed is 114 km/h. Drive goes through a ZF 6S558 six-speed manual. Here the sheet conflicts with itself: the "new model features overview" names the 6S558, but the "base model features overview" names a 6S500. These are different transmission codes, so confirm which gearbox the unit you receive actually carries before you plan spares or driver training.

The rear axle is an NPR unit rated at 6.0 tonnes with a 4.33 ratio and a 10,784 N·m torque capacity; the front axle is a non-disconnectable I-beam rated at 2.85 tonnes. The frame is riveted, 70/62 × 70 × 10/12 mm. Wheelbase is 3,360 mm and the truck is classified N2 (light commercial). For a flatbed doing terminal runs this is appropriately sized: light enough to be manoeuvrable in a depot, strong enough for a 5-tonne payload.

Flatbed internal dimensions 4,170 × 2,100 × 400 mm; deck height 1,090 mm, payload 5,115 kg.

2. The bed, the payload and the deck height

The flatbed's internal dimensions are 4,170 × 2,100 × 400 mm, with a loading deck height of 1,090 mm and a declared flatbed payload of 5,115 kg (plus three occupants). Overall flatbed dimensions are 5,995 × 2,200 × 2,370 mm. That bed is long enough for a 20-foot container skeleton conversion or for break-bulk and equipment, and the 400 mm side height keeps the load low and stable. With an 8.5-tonne GVW and a 5,115 kg payload, this is a genuine light cargo platform, not a passenger-derivative ute.

3. The three conflicts you must settle

Emission label. The engine line records "China Stage III" while the vehicle line records "Euro III". These are different certification families. Confirm with your Tunisian importer which badge the registration paperwork carries, because the two are not interchangeable at customs.

ABS deleted. The "changes on the new model" note states that, relative to the prior variant, ABS was deleted and a load-sensing proportioning valve was fitted as standard. So this unit relies on a proportioning valve, not ABS, for brake balance. For a depot vehicle that is workable, but it is a safety downgrade you should know about and confirm against Tunisian requirements.

Air conditioning. The "main standard configuration" line explicitly says "no air conditioner", while the options list offers a manual air conditioner. Treat A/C as optional, not standard, and specify it on the order if the cab will be occupied in a hot Tunisian summer.

Also note: the listing does not state a fuel-tank capacity, so range cannot be quoted. Confirm the tank size, and the tyre fitment (standard LL7.50R16, with options for tubed 7.50R16 or tubeless 215/75 R17.5), before finalising.

4. Why a flatbed belongs in port & container work

A 6×4 yard tractor is the right tool for pulling a loaded box, but a great deal of port and container-related movement is lighter: shifting empty containers on a skeleton, feeding a container depot with a chassis, moving break-bulk and equipment around the terminal, and running short regional legs to a logistics park. For that tier the Aumark S flatbed is the sensible vehicle — it is light enough to be manoeuvrable in a depot and cheap enough to run in numbers, while its 5,115 kg payload covers most non-box freight. Frame it as terminal support and feeder movement, not as a replacement for a dedicated container chassis tractor.

5. Deck, tyres and depot fit

The 1,090 mm loading deck height is low enough for hand loading and forklift work in a depot, and the 4,170 mm bed length suits a 20-foot skeleton or long break-bulk. Tyres are standard LL7.50R16 with options for tubed 7.50R16 or tubeless 215/75 R17.5 — choose the tubeless option if the truck will mix yard and highway, since it is the more puncture-resistant on sealed roads. The exhaust brake and the recirculating-ball steering with power assist are adequate for the speeds and weights involved; just remember the ABS point above, because a depot shared with pedestrians and forklifts is exactly where brake behaviour matters.

Axle-load law and the road reality in Tunisia

Tunisia applies axle-load limits on a Middle Eastern / Mediterranean pattern — a single-axle limit around 13 t, a tandem near 24 t and gross combination weight near 44 t — enforced by the Ministry of Transport. Rades is the gateway, and the freight runs olive oil and phosphates to the coast. The practical catch is that the market is price-sensitive and the distances are short by regional standards, so a mid-size rigid fits most work. The core business is olive-oil, phosphate and export freight, and a truck that is cheap to buy but expensive to run spends more of its life parked than earning.

For a container tractor the real exposure is the Rades access road: an overweight box scaled at the gate is offloaded on the spot, and there is no cheap way to recover it from the port road.

What Tunisian fleets already run

In Tunisia the reference vehicle is a used Japanese truck — Isuzu, Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso dominate the second-hand market — with European brands in the premium segment, Sinotruk Howo and Shacman as the main Chinese competition, and a large gray-market used fleet in some markets. The used Japanese truck wins on parts density but loses on age and the rebuild cost that lands within a couple of years. The new Chinese truck wins on warranty and a clean bill of health. Foton’s pitch is the middle ground.

6. Pre-order checklist for Tunisia

Pin the emission badge. China Stage III vs Euro III are different labels. Get the registration-tier in writing.

Confirm the gearbox code. 6S558 vs 6S500 on the same sheet. Specify the exact unit and its spares.

Accept or reject the ABS deletion. The unit ships without ABS, with a proportioning valve. Verify this clears Tunisian rules for your use.

Order the air conditioner. It is optional, not standard. Add it explicitly if the cab will be used in summer heat.

Get the fuel-tank size and tyres. Neither is printed; confirm both, plus the deck height against your loading bay.

At $16,626 the Aumark S 8.5 T is a low-cost, left-hand-drive flatbed for the lighter end of Tunisian port and container support — depot feeding, empty-container moves and break-bulk. It is honestly specified as a light truck, and its three internal conflicts are all resolvable on the order sheet, provided you raise them before the deposit leaves your account.
