Scroll the dump truck listings and one number jumps out of the titles: 80T, 70T, 55T. It is the most prominent figure on the page, it is the one buyers quote to each other, and on a surprising number of specification sheets it does not correspond to anything that a weighbridge or a registration office will recognise.

This piece takes six dump chassis from the catalogue and reads that badge against the two numbers that actually carry legal weight — gross vehicle weight and gross combination weight — plus the axle ratings underneath them. Two of the six reconcile perfectly. Four do not.

Three different numbers, one badge

On a Foton heavy sheet there are three places a tonnage appears. The first is the platform label, filed as “Tonnage / Boom Length”. The second is GVW, the maximum mass of the truck and its load. The third is GCW, the maximum mass of the truck plus whatever it is towing. They are not interchangeable, and the sheets mix them freely.

The case that reconciles: GTL 8×4 430

The GTL 8×4 430 hp is the cleanest sheet in the group. Platform label 80T, gross vehicle weight 80,000 kg, no GCW because an 8×4 dump truck does not tow. Wheelbase 1,800 + 4,700 + 1,350 mm, chassis 12,000 × 2,495 × 3,580 mm, cargo box internal 9,400 × 2,300 × 900 mm. The engine is an ISGe5-430 of 11,800 cc making 430 hp and 2,200 N·m at 1,000 rpm, to Euro V by SCR, through a Fast 12JSDX240T(Q) iron-case twelve-speed on a 4.76 axle. Nine-tonne front axle, 16-tonne middle/rear, 350-litre aluminium tank, thirteen 12.00R20 tyres, left-hand drive. Sales country Peru. Listed at $55,800.

Its 6×4 sibling, the GTL 6×4 460 hp, follows the same pattern with a 55T label against 55,000 kg GVW: wheelbase 3,575 + 1,350 mm, chassis 8,290 × 2,490 × 3,400 mm, box 5,600 (5,400) × 2,300 × 1,100 mm, ISGe4-460 of 11,800 cc at 460 hp and 2,300 N·m between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm, Euro IV by SCR, same Fast twelve-speed iron box, 5.26 axle, 7.5T front and 16T middle/rear, 350 litres, eleven 12R22.5 tyres. $45,550.

The case that quietly switches meaning: EST 6×4 350

The EST 6×4 350 hp is labelled 55T exactly like the GTL above it. Read one line further and the sheet says gross vehicle weight 25,000 kg and gross combination weight 55,000 kg. The badge is describing the combination, not the truck. A buyer who orders it expecting 55 tonnes of payload capacity on four axles has misread the page by a factor of two.

If a sheet gives you a badge and a GVW that disagree, the GVW is the one your registration office will use. The badge is a product family name.

The rest of that chassis is coherent and worth reading on its own terms: 4,100 + 1,350 mm wheelbase, chassis 8,600 / 8,800 × 2,545 × 3,450 mm, box 5,800 / 6,000 × 2,300 × 1,100 mm, ISGe3-350 of 10,500 cc at 257 kW / 350 hp and 1,800 N·m between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm, Euro III with no emission route listed, Sinotruk HW19712 iron twelve-speed, 5.26 axle, 9T front and 16T middle/rear, ABS, eleven 12.00R20 20PR tyres, 350-litre tank — and right-hand drive. The case that matches nothing: GTL-E 8×4 380

The GTL-E 8×4 380 hp carries an 80T platform label. Its gross vehicle weight is 31,000 kg and its gross combination weight is 68,000 kg. Neither is 80 tonnes. The honest reading is that 80T identifies the product family this chassis belongs to, and the truck in front of you is a 31-tonne eight-wheeler with a 68-tonne combination rating.

As a machine it is a sensible quarry spec: 1,800 + 3,300 + 1,400 mm wheelbase, chassis 9,300 / 9,600 × 2,550 × 3,800 mm, box 6,300 / 6,500 / 6,800 × 2,300 × 1,500 mm, ISGe5-380 of 11,800 cc at 279 kW / 380 hp, Euro V by SCR, Sinotruk HW23712 iron twelve-speed, 5.26 axle, 9T front and 16T middle/rear, ABS, thirteen 12.00R20 18PR tyres, 300-litre aluminium tank, left-hand drive. Then the honest ones: no badge at all

Two chassis in this group decline to play the game. The Auman Kunlun 8×4 publishes 31 tonnes gross across all six of its variants with 15.37 tonnes rated load and 15.5 tonnes kerb, and simply names the horsepower: 580 hp (X13NS6B580, 12.9 L, 426 kW), 490 hp (X12NS6B490, 11.8 L, 360 kW) or 470 hp (X12NS6B470, 11.8 L, 346 kW), all to China VI, through Fast 12JSDX260K or 12JSDX240A manuals. Axle ratios are 4.76 or 5.92. Cargo boxes run 6.5, 6.8 or 7.6 m by 2.3 m at 1.3 or 1.5 m high. Front axles 6,500/6,500 kg, rear axle group 18,000 kg on a 300 dual axle, twelve 12.00R20 18PR tyres, wheelbases of 2,100 + 3,000 + 1,400, 2,100 + 3,650 + 1,400 or 2,100 + 4,000 + 1,400 mm. $56,600.

The ETX 6×4 430 hp is the other one, and it is the only chassis in this group where the axle ratings add up to the gross weight exactly: 7,000 kg front plus 18,000 kg rear axle group equals the published 25 tonnes.
